Oh, yeah, it's coming out. It has just taken a back seat to his GOUT project.

Is this project still coming out. Desperately seeking a DVD quality NTSC version of the 1997 editions as the 2004 suck.

I can't wait for this release, as well as Dark Jedi's GOUT.
I don't remember if you ever solved the chroma issue with the Flunk-version, d_j, but this line in your script will help to reduce that problem:
mergechroma(blur(1.0))
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Thanks, but these have actually been done for a while now and I don't think I will be doing these again, am I 100% happy with these? no, but I really like these ALOT better than any LD transfer, and I mean any, and the addition of DE's DD 5.1 rips from the LD's makes this sound great.
DJ, are these done now?
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

They have been done for quit some time actually.
doh!
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?
So these are based on the broadcast versions (gkar, flunk, reviax, etc), right?
And more importantly, HOW TO GET?

what he said. I got the widescreen 97 vhs tapes for a dollar each at a small video store closing sale. I would really like to get a better version of those.
And again, I think it might be possible to drop some of the unchanged 1997 footage into the worst shots (particularly the ones with DVNR smearing since that can't be easily removed like scratches) and create the best possible original version. The 1997 is close enough in color timing to mix with the gout and it's not super filtered or overly sharp like the 2004 versions are so there wouldn't be such a disparity.
Has someone tried that already? Mixing the gout with certain parts of the best 1997 version?
Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77
I'm actually considering doing that this summer, pending Dark_Jedi's approval to use his discs as source material. I haven't asked yet, though - I'm not even sure if I'll have time to do it yet.
I've thought about this idea, but wouldn't the color need lots of tweaking to match?
Also, is there any version that doesn't paint Mos Eisley pink?

I too have thought about the idea, but I was thinking that the GOUT should be color timed to match the 1997 SE (minus the pink Mos Eisley of course). After all, the GOUT is a very desaturated source, as discussed in other threads. On the other hand, the 1997 SE's color timing was based on Lucas's personal print (probably with fantastic colors). In my opinion, the 97 SE has great color; though, since I grew up with it, I'm probably biased. It seems much more colorful and natural than other versions.
Well, I finished giving the "review screener" of DJ's ANH '97 V2 a once-over, and everything about it is 100% perfect. I have no complaints, not even minor ones (well, the smearing, but that's inherent in the broadcasts, and it's not nearly as bad as the GOUT anyway). Looks and sounds great, no sync issues, and no glaring compression artifacts.
I did notice that it seems like the color palate changes with each reel, or something along those lines. Some shots look exactly like they should, others are a bit too blue, and most of Tatooine is too pink.
Oh, and I have been proven wrong about the "STAR WARS" receding logo - I thought it was redone for the 2004 DVD, which is why it moved way too quickly on that disc. But it turns out it's been that way since 1997. Surprised me a bit.
Cool news. The 97 LDs have that color fluctuation. Supposedly in the restoration they tried to match Lucas's technicolor print for SW. (Wonder what happened to that print?) Some scenes look good, while others not so much...

Perhaps the reel with most Mos Eisley scenes faded to pink... Maybe the people who did the restoration thought that was the natural color.
EDIT: Also, is the 1997 V2 exclusive to donators like the JSC V2 or will it eventually be released on Newsgroups, torrents, etc?
It's supposed to be released the last I heard. (sure hope it is!!!)

Not sure yet, we will see.
Funny thing, while I was going through my external hard drives for some files I need for my new project I came across my original capping of the 97 SE Laserdiscs, and LOL they were already IVTC'd, I forgot I had that much doen already before jumping on the DV broadcasts.

Are you gonna release these? The more preservations, the merrier, especially since you already IVTC'd them...:)
