Never taught Vader how to do the lightning? He taught it to Dooku. I don’t know how long he was his apprentice, but surely Vader should have learned it by then. You could argue he can’t do it cause he don’t have hands. But his mechanical hands seem to be fine for force choking and force pushing.
Because the prequels were bad movies.
Dooku lightening was one of the stupidest things in the prequels.

Vader conquring Force Lightning would be more harmful to himself than the being who would be the intended victim. Using it could either render his cybernetic limbs useless and could also shut down his breathing apparatus. The latter of which killed him in ROTJ.

And the Legends explanation was that he didn’t have physical arms through which to channel them and that him dying from Force Lightning shows it’s probably not a good idea to generate that yourself.

Well he isn’t. Vader is a Master of the Dark Side but even lesser Sith can conjure up Force Lightning with varying degrees of effectiveness.
It’s a shitty attack anyway. You only need a lightsaber to dismiss it (or “Force hands”). If Yoda had told Luke about that he might have never thrown away his saber.
Clever implementations of Force Lightnibg can circumvent that.

The question is why didn’t the Emperor teach Vader force lightning if he taught Dooku. My original answer was because the prequels suck…in other words, he shouldn’t have taught Dooku in the first place. The reasons for Vader not using force lightning should be based on the OT, not the PT. And based on the OT, there’s Vader and The Emperor and that’s it.

The right answer is that it would damage Vader’s cybernetics. PT hate is fine in most circumstances but not in this one.

His over confidence is his weakness. He didn’t expect Vader to turn on him.
If you just watch the OT it’s easy to assume that the Emperor is just more powerful. When I was a kid and first saw Dooku use lightning it was a big what the fuck moment. Even in TFA you don’t see Kylo Ren use lightning. It shouldn’t be ubiquitous for sith and you certainly shouldn’t be able to deflect it so easy.
