This is going to bug the crap out of me now.(possible ep. III spoilers)

How does it take Nineteen years to build the first Death Star, but 4 years to build the second one, which was bigger and more powerful.

And people thought that Bostons Big Dig was huge drain, I wonder how many times the Imperial Senate tried to can the DS, or divert funding to other things, like expanding Marksmanship training for stormtroopers.

As silly as it may seem, I don't think the Imperial Senate knew about the Death Star.

I'd always assumed that the Emporer shaved off the top(or bottom) of the personnel lists(the mindlessly loyal of course) gradually or used slave labor to have enough workers to build the first Death Star.

It could have been easy then to keep it secret from the senate (its a big galaxy after all).

Once the senate was dissolved, he brought in all of the manpower he could muster from all over the Empire to build the second, which resulted in it being completed much faster.

That's probably the best explanation I've ever heard. Besides, the second DS, while "fully functional", was not full completed.

Interestingly enough, in the original ROTJ writings, there were two new Death Stars.

I assume that they began work on the second death star while the first was still being constructed. Why would you build just one massive super weapon when you could build two? Or three? Or...you get it. So, even though there is no mention of it, I would assume that in the middle of building the first one, they chose another secret location to begin building another.

Bothan spies aren't the best source of information...the Empire could have easily been working on that thing a lot longer than the plans showed.

That's my explanation anyway. It hasn't really bothered me since I came up with that.

Also, if you build it once, you know how it goes and whatnot. Making a second one of something is always a lot easier than making the first.

As said earlier, the second one would probably be cheaper and easier to build because the bugs would be worked out during construction of the first.

It is also possible that the plans just sat around on Palpatine's desktop for years until he had enough power and resources to use them. It might have taken only five or six to build the first Death Star.

Its just Lucas screwing up the EU, that's all. I'll bet its not even being built over Despayre now.

Sessler does have the most plausible explanation though.
