Whatever happened to: I liked the movie cause I enjoyed it, and I didn't like the movie cause I didn't enjoy it.

I blame the internet. =)

I totally respect and understand people's reasons for not liking the PT but I got tired a long time ago of justifying why I liked them. The OT is my true love,ANH above all,but I have room for the prequels too.I like the two trilogies for different reasons.I would never dream of telling someone they SHOULD like the PT but I always got others telling me why I shouldn't.
And you're right.....that dang newfangled internet....lol

The only nice things I can think to say about Episode 1 is that most of the fight scenes are well executed, the 3-way Duel of Fates being undeniably well staged, and the music was good for the most part. Other than that, it was a very hollow & empty film, devoid emotion and/or sincerity.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I can say the usual crap about be disappointed the first time I watched TPM, because I was.....
But, when the film was released on VHS I found a new love for it.
And still to this day I can watch the last 45 mins of the film (When the battle starts) and still think it's probably one of the best arranged 45 mins of action that I've seen on screen.
For me it just works. Sure some of the Gungan scenes are pretty bad, but inter cut with the space battle and Lightsaber duel, it seems to have a nicely paced flow to it all. And then it has maybe the best scene in the film...Yoda and Obi-Wans conversation. Just a shame that AOTC was the biggest pile of wank I'd seen in a long time.

I like ROTS though...Again, there's a fast paced energy to that film.

The lightsaber duel (truel?) in TPM was epic action cinema, but severely undercut by the insistence on cross-cutting it with THREE other fronts of action. All the same, it's an exhilarating sequence and always a pleasure to watch.

ROTS made the mistake of trying to up the ante, and make the Obi-Wan / Anakin duel even MORE intense and exciting. This was a mistake on two levels - one, you can't just simply ramp up action in the belief that it makes it better - iin this case it became excessive and occasionally incoherent, and the result was to distance the viewer.

The other problem as I see it was that it shouldn't have been played as an 'exciting' scene at all - this sequence has the most forgone conclusion in the entire saga, so why not treat it with mournful inevitability? Long takes, subdued sound effects, scored with music more along the lines of the 'Anakin's Betrayal' cue. This could probably be re-edited quite effectively, now that I think about it - I don't suppose any of the existing fan edits took this approach?

That would have been nice.

In the same manner, I always thought that the Yoda duels were done completely wrong. I pictured Yoda being the model of efficiency - a step here, a move there, and "bing" you realize you've been hit. But instead he was a maniacal banshee. Another lost opportunity.

Went to see TPM with a friend my same age (29 in '99) who had seen it once before. On purpose, he didn't tell me anything of what he thought about it. When the SW logo and crawl came up I was stoked! When I was reading the crawl I was thinking "WTF? This doesn't make any sense". After a few Jar Jar'isms and horrible Lucas slapstick along with the BAD acting and dialogue, I leaned over to my friend and whispered "This is HORRIBLE!" I wanted to walk out half way through, and by the time it was over I wished I had. My friend said that he thought it was bad the first time he saw it but that he must have somehow just not "understood" what Lucas was trying to do. He understood after two times seeing it, for sure. I remember being so blown away at how truly awful and clueless GL had become and was insulted as a child of the 70's growing up on Star Wars. Little did I realize that that was only really the first salvo of insults headed my way....

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

OK thats just weird. That's almost exactly the same way I saw TPM, I was 31 in '99, saw it with a buddy, thought it sucked, wanted to talk about it during the movie, felt insulted, didn't know more crap was on its way.....

Oh wait there was one difference...on the way out of the theater, I told the 300' line of SW hopefuls that was waiting outside that the movie sucked and to save their money....I remember running for my car....

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I had that same confusion. Why wasn't I stoked over this movie? At first I thought it was too many spoilers, but after seeing it again, I just realized that it was much deeper.

I did take to opportunity as I walked out to tell some fans waiting in line the spoiler "Psst... Anakin kills Obi-wan"

LOL, why didn't I think of doing something like that. Walk out of the theater and loudly exclaim, "WOW! I can't believe Yoda is Luke and Leia mother!!!"

If George had really wanted to screw with us and make our heads spin more than they did after ESB, he could have had it turn out that Obi-Wan was the real father of Luke and Leia. That would have added some much needed depth to the PT. There were any number of twists he could have pulled on us... perfectly good waste of some incredible opportunites, traded away for some really long advertisments for toys, video games, and some very creative suckers in the form of lightsabers and tongues. Imagine if there had been a Padme sucker of the same design as the Jar Jar sucker, despite being a little creepy for poor Miss Portman, I bet that thing would have out sold the Jar Jar sucker ten to one.

Another thing that can be said for episode one, I honestly miss the laughs I used to get everytime I would go to the store with my friends back in 1999 and we would make fun of the new SW merchandise. Those are probably some of my most memorable moments of the PT era.

i was watching a bit of episode 1 recently when my brother borrowed and watched my dvd, yes sadly id do have the prequels in my collection and have only watched episode 1 and 2 once on dvd, never even bothered finish watching revenge of the sith on dvd.

the jar jar stuff poop and fart jokes and racist character are extremely annoying and stick out like a sore thumb. the dialogue is so horribly written in in all three prequel films and natalies performance so bad and cardboard that i feel sorry for her because she actually is a terrific actress.

what was george on when he made these movies, they make the plots and dialogues of the oot seem like shakepeare in comparison. the magic is gone i don't particularly care for any of the characters. hayden's whiny bitch emo thing is retarded, the jedi come off as inept, polticians are equally retarded and democracy does not work we are supposed to believe the mother of luke and Leia would fall for such a douchebag murdererer of younglings and psyhcopath , and the strong leader she was in episode 1 where leia supposedly got all she was from ends up barefoot and pregnant in the third episode and dies of a broken heart, LOL. assinine.
