Spuffure I’m sorry if this comes off as confrontational, but if going on the internet causes you so much pain that you wish you were forced not to use the internet, why don’t you just choose to stop using the internet?

I’m sorry to say it’s not as simple as that. Not only can there be actually useful and important stuff on the internet (which I failed to mention in this last post), my ADHD and OCD often make me “relapse” and compulsively go down a downward spiral.

Yeah, unfortunately the Internet is unavoidable for anyone in school or many lines of work and is thus a constant distraction/temptation. It’s addictive and always in reach. At this point, not using the Internet is a bit like never going outside.

You aren’t seeing “horrible things you wish you could unsee” on those unavoidable parts of the internet you need for school or work though, are you? You’re seeing that because you went on websites which are obviously going to have horrible things you wish you could unsee.

For sure, but the very nature of addiction is that if you are in a place that triggers addictive behaviour (the “place” in this case being the Internet itself), it takes a lot of willpower to avoid. If you have OCD or other mental health conditions as Spuffure does, it’s that much harder.

If someone’s seriously that addicted to the internet that just going on for school or work makes them immediately go on websites where they see things they wish they could unsee, which have partially ruined their life, they have a serious problem and need some serious help. Throwing up your hands and saying that the only solution to the problem is if the internet never existed is just going to lead to you, unsurprisingly, seeing more shit that’s going to partially ruin your life. Unless they take action to change their behavior, their behavior isn’t going to change.

Facts.

“Mythology is not a lie, mythology is poetry, it is metaphorical. It has been well said that mythology is the penultimate truth — penultimate because the ultimate cannot be put into words. It is beyond words. Beyond images, beyond that bounding rim of the Buddhist Wheel of Becoming. Mythology pitches the mind beyond that rim, to what can be known but not told.”

Agreed.

But that’s a lot more difficult than just not using the Internet, isn’t it? Hence the desire for that problem to not be there in the first place…

Here I am. Ungodly late at night, typing this out, when I should have been long asleep.

The amount that people get addicted to computers and the internet rather than using them for productive and meaningful work (made worse for people with ADHD disorders) is tragic.

The internet was peddled as a meaningful and revolutionary tool, but humans being humans, it is now corrupted by filth, lies, and addiction.

I hope that 2023 will be the best year I’ll have in a long time and I’ll be able to break free from the shackles of this disease.

Pretty sure the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages had plenty of similar problems before capitalism was even on the horizon. The problems with capitalism are primarily problems with human beings being flawed. In a perfect world, capitalism would work just fine (just like communism, which never works in reality).

It hasn’t worked because it’s never been allowed to work. Capitalists and authoritarian “socialists” have sabotaged genuine socialist movements at every turn.

A bit like how the government has continually sabotaged the free market system? Almost like neither system works, because of the way human beings are…

You appear to be conflating the free market and capitalism. If you have a half-hour to spare, I suggest watching this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lMzuq84IHQ

Almost like neither system works, because of the way human beings are…

“Poor human nature, what horrible crimes have been committed in thy name! Every fool, from king to policeman, from the flatheaded parson to the visionless dabbler in science, presumes to speak authoritatively of human nature. The greater the mental charlatan, the more definite his insistence on the wickedness and weaknesses of human nature. Yet, how can any one speak of it today, with every soul in a prison, with every heart fettered, wounded, and maimed?”

— Emma Goldman

Human nature is not a rigid, fixed thing; it is elastic, with the capacity for selfishness and selflessness existing in equal measure. It’s only our environment which pushes us in one direction more than the other.

Thank you for correcting my lazy language. To be fair, though (to myself not to you 😛), I assumed you were yourself conflating the terms, as most people do. I don’t understand capitalism as well as I would like to, but I’m willing to admit it’s an inherently flawed system.

I have a somewhat different view of human nature than you do (fundamentally good, but also deeply damaged, as opposed to being balanced between the two), so if we’re going to have a productive conversation, we’d have to get into that. I don’t blame human nature, I blame the state in which human beings exist now, which is a corruption of the goodness inherent to human nature.

I strongly dislike the term “Grammar Nazi”. How does being obsessively corrective to someone’s grammar have anything to do with killing a lot of innocent people?

“Grammar Cop” or “Grammar Policeman” is a much more suitable term.

I dunno. Cops kill lots of innocent people, too.

Capitalism was not necessary to put filth, lies, and addiction on the internet.

I used to hear Grammar Police all the time, but I don’t anymore.
