I share your sentiments, but for entirely different reasons…

I’m gonna be honest, the way you worded that Jack Napier sounded like satire…and honestly I’ rather read it that way. I’m tired of cancel culture. Granted Idk what exactly has people up in arms this time but I have the sneaking suspicion it’s as trivial and agenda-driven as usual.

From what I gathered a comedian tapped by Netflix has made a transphobic comedy routine and has been quoted as saying that he loves offending people.

I’m just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Star Wars has 3 eras: The eras are 1977-1983(pre Expanded Universe), (1983-2014) expanded universe, or (2014- now) Disney-bought version. Each are valid.

Well if he says things just for the sake offending people, what he says kinda loses any weight. Can’t really be offended by something meant to offend.

That makes sense actually

Boycott Transphobic Netflix who are backing an anti trans comedian! Fuck Netflix!!!

I heard about this. Never watched Dave Chappelle and never going to now, it sounds like a lot of his current comedy is built off so-called ‘commentary’ on LGBTQ+ people, with transphobic and homophobic jokes, and straight up saying he’s ‘Team TERF’. I know the usual discourse will be around cancel culture, but come on guys, we do need to see some accountability and meaningful consequences for being a bigot. Intolerance shouldn’t still be tolerated in this day and age.

If we want to talk about what cancel culture really looks like, maybe let’s turn to how Netflix fired the organiser of a ‘trans walkout’ in peaceful protest of Dave Chappelle’s comments and Netflix’s defence of him.

Exactly. I couldn’t have said it better.

Absolutely but there’s a thin line in humour I find between doing it in jest and doing it with ill intent. I think knowing it will offend people is when you should rethink your approach. Especially when it comes to minorities and those underrepresented. It leads to a dangerous precedent that it’s okay to treat people who don’t meet the “norm” this way. There’s a thin line when crossing that line.

Don Rickles I find was one to insult people but you always knew he was just doing it in jest. That’s the difference between this situation and with him.

I think precisely because the line is thin, I tend to cut comedians more slack here. A lot of good humour is offensive to people with thin skin. But I can also accept that some humour is legitimately offensive and in poor taste. I have no investment in or real knowledge about Dave Chappelle, so I can’t make a judgement in his case.

I do too usually. However from what I’ve gathered he went in with the intent that he knew it would offend people. I think that’s when he should’ve taken a step back and re-thought his plan. I mean a few jokes here and there aren’t a bad thing as everyone should laugh at themselves but going as far as doing it with ill intent is pushing it a bit far in my book.

It’s like Eddie Murphy’s jokes about homosexuals in the 1980s, which even in those days came off as mean-spirited.

Generally sure, but Chappelle literally says “I’m team TERF”. There’s no joke there, he’s just announcing he’s transphobic.

There’s a good Terry Pratchett quote the situation made me think of: “Satire is meant to ridicule power. If you are laughing at people who are hurting, it’s not satire, it’s bullying.” And we should all know how much the trans community are hurting. Dave Chappelle has a lot of power and influence as a prominent comedian and he should use that platform for good instead of attacking a marginalised group.

One metric for comedy that makes sense to me is to ask whether it punches ‘up’ or ‘down’, in other words if it makes fun of powerful groups/people or historically marginalized ones. It’s not a perfect metric but in general I find comedy far better if it punches up instead of down.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

To all y’all complaining about complaining about Dave Chappelle, this is a blatant marketing stunt. Netflix is not exactly a socially conservative company, they wouldn’t have put this on their platform if that wasn’t the point. Fabricating a controversy = Very opinionated people watch a mediocre comedy routine they otherwise wouldn’t.

Both the above comments strike me as very true.

And yes, it’s absurd to think Netflix is jumping on the “anti-trans” bandwagon. The kind of stuff they feature is usually outrageous in the other direction.

I hate always being alone. The only people I see regularly are those who participate in the same activities as me, which IRL is just classes so only last a few months, then I never see them again. On the Internet’s it’s easier cuz people can stick around forever, but they’re still only there to discuss some common hobby, not to talk to me in particular. If I died today would anyone outside my family attend my funeral?
