I just expect people to not degrade me by demanding that I alter my appearance for them.

When people tell you that you should smile more, they are not demanding that you alter your appearance for them. They are saying that they find your smiling face pleasant and request that you display it.

I smile when I feel like it, and if I don’t feel like smiling then I don’t smile.

It is easier to tolerate the general stresses of life when one is not hanging around people who grump. Having friends who are happy when you are around them helps ones mood.

I’m not grumpy in person, at least not all the time. I find it insulting and quite disgusting to expect someone to display a smile even if they aren’t happy or cheerful enough at the moment to do so on their own.

I don’t particularly care for smiling on demand either. If somebody tells me to “give them a smile” I almost always say no unless it’s an old lady or something, sometimes even followed by “I don’t smile on demand” if it’s a naggy person that I don’t like. But if someone just says “you should smile more”, like a general statement, that doesn’t bother me so much and makes me actually contemplate it.

I think this is the first time anyone has ever told me to smile more, actually, so I haven’t given it much thought.

There is a difference between the two, in my interpretation anyway. One is selfish and just wants you to “smile for them” so that THEY can feel like they are making a positive influence. The other is usually more in the direction of worldly advice meant to make help you think about ways to make life more pleasant for yourself.

There’s a difference, but I am opposed to both of them still.

Genuinely opposed to or just annoyed by?

People can say what they want, but generally I’d rather they just mind their own business.

I guess, although usually somebody telling you to smile more is being kind and not really from a judgemental place. It would be a weird thing to be judgemental about

Author

It would be, but I still prefer to be left alone rather than be told to smile more by someone who knows next to nothing about me.

Who? Jack Nicholson? No one who’s seen the Shining would tell him to smile more.

As long as he isn’t chasing me with an axe through a hotel that’s snowed in for the winter, he can smile all he wants. 😉

Where were you in '77?

I hate young people and children. I can’t relate to them at all and little kids freak me out.
