Either make him so that he wasn't the creator of Star Wars, or that he actually did make the "smaller independent films" he said he planned to do after the OT.
Or how about erasing him from film history altogether and replacing him with Gary Kurtz. He would have made the prequels great.
Sorry, but you can't change past history. All you can do is create a divergent timeline that'll run alongside the original without affecting it in the least. =P
