If George Had Made The Sequel Trilogy...

What would it look like? What would the story have been? What would the characters have been like?

I read somewhere that he planned on having child protagonists. So the main characters (if this was true) would’ve been around TPM Anakin’s age.

Oh man, that would have been a bad idea. You can make a movie with children but not if you don’t know how to cast or direct them.

I think it would have been okay. He’d be free to do whatever he wanted, and wouldn’t have to worry about things lining up with future events like he had to in the prequels.

Honestly, I think it would actually turn out somewhat similar to The Force Awakens. It would be different stylistically, but the overall “quality” of the film would be similar.

Well… maybe not quite as good as TFA, but still in the same ballpark.

Much of what was planned for the sequel trilogy was condensed in to ROTJ from what I read.

After Empire George went off the idea of making Loads more Star Wars films as it nearly made him bankrupt and his divorce and so on.

Return of the Jedi was the ticket George needed to Set up Skywalker Ranch and all the companies in the franchise.

So there was probably a new sequel trilogy written later. But most of it is in ROTJ

Since this kind of describes the prequels, I can see it for a Lucas ST as well.

Sorry… I don’t use forums often. But I’m glad my error has entertained you!

I have corrected my post though, so you can all stop picking on me now 😉

He didn’t even care about the source material when making the PT so if he made the ST he probably would have disregarded the originals in those films as well.

That’s good because I read that a long time ago and cannot remember my sources.

I honestly think a Lucas-made Ep. VII would be two hours of second-hand embarrassment. He had three movies of which he had almost complete control and they turned out terribly. His stubbornness to admit his mistakes is kind of sad. Especially recently regarding his interviews about The Force Awakens.

Assuming he had made them with the same attitude he had during the PT era, I bet all of Han and Leia’s children would be pre-adolescence. I also doubt he would have killed any main characters, and if he did it would have been in a very uncomfortable way, like Padme losing the will to live.

Having under 18 protagonist is a good idea, but it needs good execution, which is hard to get when you’re working with teens and kids.

Nothing is wrong with a teenage protagonist but a child one is more worrisome due to “good” child actors being so rare.

We will never know I guess. It could have even been better. Not that it would take a lot as TFA is quite average.

It’s possible but if George were to do this all by himself like he did with the PT it would undoubtedly be a inferior film.

Could his VII have been better than TFA? Hard to say. While TFA alone may have (almost deliberately) lost in originality to the PT, it was overall better directed from a technical standpoint. Had Lucas chosen to direct VII, but only co-writting the script (with Kasdan ofc), I think this time his movie could’ve been technically on par with TFA, and could’ve even surpassed it in feeling fresh while staying true to the originals.

EDIT: I wouldnt’ve liked his idea of SW as a generational saga and its implication, though :\

Keep in mind that originality is not inherently a good thing. Confusing and bad originality (as seen in the PT) is meaningless in my opinion, no matter how original it was.

I had to say it twice to prove my point. 😉
