I would if the version on Blu-ray was the director's cut. I want most of the director's cut effect changes in this edit. The Vulcan and San Francisco shots, The first attacks by V'ger, The Wormhole, The walk over to V'ger, The V'ger CGI fly-by, and stuff like that. Yes, I had to put  the wormhole scene back in due to impassable story continuity problems. I had to have Decker and Kirk have that conflict with the phaser order, and then half of the scene in Kirk's quarters. It's just way too important. The wormhole and quarters scene is cut down a great deal to make them move along faster, yet they still convey the important plot points, and character interaction.  The entire segment with the Vulcan warp shuttle is removed at this point. Spock enters the bridge to the shock of everyone just before the ship leaves drydock. With the dialog I put in place just before this shot, it comes across as if Spock was in the last group of crew to beam aboard.  The pajama party on the rec deck is out.  I re-edited the footage of the Epsilon-9 transmissions, and then I just superimposed the rec-deck view screen images on to the bridge view screen. I took reaction shots of the bridge crew from the scenes I am cutting on the travel into V'ger. You guys would not believe how well this worked out.

Sorry you couldn't get around the wormhole.  I wish they could have found a different way to have a conflict, instead of having this completely random wormhole and asteroid going at warp speed.  I guess its alright because it doesn't go on as long.

Sound effects, I need some... Can anyone help?

I need bridge sound effects from the films. Anyone know where these can be found? I have the T.V. effects CD...

Sorry, I only have the TV effects CD as well.  Is there no dead silent scene in this movie on the bridge you can't replicate the sound out of?

I found it!  It's on the "Generations" Soundtrack. I forgot all about this disk.

Track 16: Enterprise B Bridge.

I tried to import isolated sounds from the film, but there is some really bad background hiss on this film. When I try to overlap sustained background effect sounds (atmosphere), the hiss is very noticeable. I want the sound to be excellent, so taking sounds off a digital cd is best. If I try and mix the old T.V. bridge with the Enterprise B effects, that may be interesting.

Maybe one of the older PC games like Starfleet Academy would have the sound FX you need?

Yet another idea, Majel Barrett needs to be to ship's computer voice. It's a tradition TMP broke with.

The Generations soundtrack has sound effects tracks?  *looks it up* That is SO awesome!  Looking forward to hearing the mix.

I have the old Windows 95 PC version of the Next Gen technical manual and episode guide with her voice, I'll see what I can import from that, but it will take a few days out of my editing. Once I start delving into my old collections I get hung up with reminiscing with it.  I also need to start listening to some of the Trek related audio books with the TOS actors. I'm sure there must be some great moments of spoken word that can be used.  One thing about Trek is that it is so rich with this type of source material.

Re: Sound effects, I've got some stuff - check over the Generations stuff and then let us know if there's anything else you need, anything specific...

FF, I was also meaning to ask you what quality sources you were working with [framerates etc.] - the dvd I own is PAL and interlaced and it looks awful.

Yet another idea, Majel Barrett needs to be to ship's computer voice. It's a tradition TMP broke with.

I guess she missed out on getting two paychecks ;)

Re: the titles - it's a proof of concept...if the classic font FF wants, the classic font FF gets. I was also considering tinkering with the TOS titles font.

time for a montage...

As you can see they all have unique elements, which is a plus..and there are also some elements in common.

My feeling is that the beginning should flow, rather than being a series of disjointed segments. Which is a part of the problem with the film as it stands [at least IMO].

Alright, I just thought of something and had to get out of bed to share it with you all. :-D

I had been considering a clever name for this edit since I worked on the poster.  "The eMotion Picture", "The reMotion Picture", etc, before eventually settling on "The Motion Picture: The FanFiltration Edition" to match "The Director's Edition".

Since, we're probably going to redo the title sequence anyway, we could name it whatever we want.  Then it came to me:

"Star Trek: The Movie"

It stays within the general naming aesthetics of the era (Superman, etc.), without leaving it with the cumbersome and arrogant-sounding "The Motion Picture".  It also gives it the fun flair I think we're looking for with this edit.

What do you all think?

I don't know if "the movie" would look great as an on screen title - but I am DEFINITELY on board with your way of thinking. It could work...

I'm wondering if it would seem inappropriate to add a dedication to the Koenigs? What do people think about that?

Ok, I am just going to spew out some random titles. I have no love or fondness for any of them. All the original series movies had "The" in the title.

Star Trek: The Resurrection

Star Trek: The Intruder Incident

Star Trek: The Evolution (V'ger evolves at the end)

Star Trek: The Return (too Jaws)

Star Trek: The Continuing Voyage

Star Trek: The Human Adventure

Star Trek: The Warped Edition

I don't like any of them....

I would think that more Trek fans would consider a title change to be more sacrilegious, then enticing. But that is just my opinion.

EDIT: I know! We can totally confuse fans by calling it Star Trek: Voyager VI Returns. They will not know if it's a original series movie, a Voyager movie, or a re-edit of Star trek VI. *wink*

Star Trek: Phase II: For real this time.

Star Trek: Then next Generation...gets demoted by The Old Generation, who aren't sorry. Not one damn bit.

The other films titles generally are something relating to the plot. Something to consider - although the plot is meant to be a little mysterious.

FF, I've just been listening to the Nemesis score and there's a lot of little incidental pieces of music that aren't really distinct in terms of theme but convey a decent atmosphere. It might be a good place to check if you're still stuck...

Yeah, In Thy Image works very well; even sounds like an episode title of the original series.

A Goon in a Gaggle of 'em

Right, it sounds like an episode, but not like the rest of the movies.  And my goal was to avoid the pretentiousness, which "Thy" will just bring more of.  And there's already a Motion Picture edit called "Phase II: In Thy Image" and even a Star Trek V edit called "Phase 2: In Thy Image".  In fact, they are the only two Star Trek movie edits on Fanedit.org besides Kirkless Generations!  LOL

From FF's list, "The Human Adventure" could work.  I've never really understood the tagline, but it might fit.  "The Continuing Voyage" isn't bad as it is descriptive and even a little spoilery as V'ger could be the voyager.  We do already have a movie with "Voyage" in the title, but I still kind of like it.

I still like my idea though. ;-)  I'll try to mock up a title on the way home.  Plenty of flight time.

Just another [quick and dirty] mockup for the screen, I haven't changed anything else in the background but I have givel it some thought...

Possibly too silly to use but you could extend the temporal time war story thread of Enterprise into the TMP and have Suliban sabotage be the real reason behind the many glitches in this important mission.

I hated the way that strand of the series was just dropped when they were trying to salvage it.

What is it with Sci-Fi show writers and Time Wars that go nowhere?

It would add a bit of a twist if mystery man turned out to be Will Decker/V'ger or even Nero having survived his encounter with what they used to call a Black Hole.

The only problem I see in using an Enterprise style monitor is it looks too much like a present day big screen tv hanging on the wall. Nearly all the screens we see in the film are oval, or have curved corners.

Well you could probably equate that to the Enterprise et al being kitted out with the latest tech [curvy] while elsewhere they still use old tech that is reliable for simple tasks...

I mean, it could even be replaced with a simple projector screen.

I was impressed with the huge monitors in Starfleet HQ in the TVH.

voyage home monitor

so why not have them floor to ceiling (especially if it not going to be the rec room, it would hide more of the structures of the room)?

Title screen mockups.  Color could be whatever, "E"s need to be rounded at the top.

I think the defining aspect of TMP was that it took a concise and visually evident break away from the television series. It allowed the viewer for the first time to be overwhelmed in the spectable of seeing Star Trek on the big screen. This meant gloriously detailed models that held up in close-up shots and even down to using custom made serif fonts in title cards.

A definitive fan edit of TMP should take cues from the Adywan Star Wars edits for single scene enhancements, fixing bad mattes, subtle though plot relevant additions to the shot and then go forward through alot of discussion about how to re-edit, re-pace and re-imagine the film.

I always felt TMP was a good movie that had a great movie lurking within, and from what I've read here and in the initial blueprint and pre-planning webpage, I honestly believe an 'eighteen month refit' will allow the first Star Trek film to sit alongside it's even numbered counterparts as one of the defining late 70's science fiction stories.

For the record, I would love to be part of this.

Love Star Trek: The Movie but some people might confuse it with Star Trek (2009)
