Can a standard Blu-Ray player even play discs larger than a BD50?

It depends on the technology behind the 100GB (triple-layer OR 4-layer aka 3BDXL or 4BDXL, reflecting surface, aso…), and on the player obviously.

From Wikipédia:
In January 2007, Hitachi showcased a 100 GB Blu-ray Disc, consisting of four layers containing 25 GB each.[79] Unlike TDK and Panasonic’s 100 GB discs, they claim this disc is readable on standard Blu-ray Disc drives that are currently in circulation, and it is believed that a firmware update is the only requirement to make it readable to current players and drives.[80] In December 2008, Pioneer Corporation unveiled a 400 GB Blu-ray Disc (containing 16 data layers, 25 GB each) that will be compatible with current players after a firmware update. Its planned launch was in the 2009–10 time frame for ROM and 2010–13 for rewritable discs. Ongoing development was underway to create a 1 TB Blu-ray Disc. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray)

So I’m not sure that BDXL are readable by all players, and I would avoid those big BR…

a 128gb USB flash drive may be a simpler, cheaper alternative for some?

A good quality branded one for that size can be found for around £30 / $30

Or maybe a good H265 compression could drastically reduce the needed size.

Even 4K77 will run out of disc space on a 100 GB disc. It will be much bigger in 4K

I’m not too knowledgeable about this, but wouldn’t a 4K movie require UHD format, and thus H265? 4K UHDs are 66 or 100 GB, I think.

Most 4k movies are around 50-70gb it might be different for 4k77 but I hope it’s around 50

Is burning a ‘homebrew’ 4K BD (h265, I think) something that is possible to do now? Can you make menus? Can you use all blu-ray sizes (25, 50, 100 GB) so long as your video fits?

It’s interesting that the pressed format of 66 GB does not seem to be a size that you can buy in writeable format. What is it, 2 and a half layers…?

Yes that would be a cheaper alternative but I still like the idea of having it on Blu-ray and I hope we can make a custom Blu-ray set for all on hear who want it

I don’t know all about burning large Blu-ray disks I hope smarter people than me can figure it out but I will do what I can for now to help
