I wonder how the colours of the original compare to this clip of the super 8mm?
The super 8mm certainly looks different to the blu ray…
not a reliable comparison. old super 8 prints will have extremely faded colors.

What ever happened with this? Was the Japanese laserdisc mono track confirmed as the original theatrical release? Did anyone put it to a high Def copy?

I’m also still looking for that theatrical restoration edit. Sigh. I’ve reverted to watching the 1997 pan and scan DVD, but even that doesn’t have the original mono (oh well).

I actually disagree on the theatrical blu-ray audio being bad, at least based off of what’s on HBO Max (which uses the same master)
To me it’s really good sounding and the “lack of surround” activity is due to it being a lot more faithful to the original mono track and doesn’t have the same gag sound effects as the 1997 DVD. I noticed hiss in it too which almost never happens in remixes of mono tracks and why it sounds so detailed
I compared it with the JP laserdisc mono audio I have and it sounds just as detailed to my ears. I didn’t notice a single instance of new sound effects either, unlike the 1997 and director’s cut mixes
The 1997 DVD however sounds awful, tons of noise reduction and the extra gag sound effects I mentioned, everything in it sounds murky

The forthcoming 4K disc from Warner is not looking promising, if the trailer they released is anything to go on. The final sequence is even BLUER than on the Blu-ray. I expected this for the Extended Director’s Cut, but some are saying it’s likely they used the same color grade for the “Original Theatrical Cut” (what a misnomer THAT is, if true). Apparently nothing is sacred.
Any hope for a 4K reconstruction once the discs are in-hand? At least it comes with the original mono this time.

Don’t ever rely on a YT video for the color grading of a 4K master
Yes it does look like the blue grading is still present but I bet the 4K disk itself will be a lot better

Either they used footage solely from the Extended Director’s Cut for the new trailer, or the OTC really is still as blue as it was the last go-round. There’s no way YouTube and its limitations are solely responsible for accidentally making the exorcism scenes—-and only the exorcism scenes—-look that blue. That doesn’t make sense.

Well well well. The 4K is out and our fears have been realized. It is absolute JUNK! I’m headed to the Spleen for the OTC. If someone here has something better, please LET ME KNOW!
It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.
