Idea & Help Wanted: The cartoon 'Kidd Video' will never be on DVD or Blu Ray, who will save it?

If you don’t know what I talkin’ about here’s a short description:

The title sequence explained the plot; Kidd Video and his band of the same name were kidnapped by a villain named Master Blaster, and transported to Master Blaster’s home dimension, a cartoon world called The Flipside. The show was dominated by an MTV-esque, music video theme and each episode featured at least one action sequence set to a popular song.

The problem is the music rights.
They will never release the 27 episodes so who will save this great '80s time capsule?

PS: There’s a great website: http://www.kvflipside.org/ but the last update on facebook is 2014…

I’ve never heard of this, but it looks amazingly 80’s.

EDIT: Just checked, and it’s already been done on you-know-where, if you have access. The episodes also appear to be all up on the site you posted, as well.

That’s true, however the original uploader of that torrent did promise a upgrade in quote “many months from now” back in 2011, so that makes me wonder whatever happened?

I know-where but it doesn’t work anymore…
Yes it’s amazingly ‘80s as everythin’ I love.
Let’s not forget this great cartoon!

I have a Spanish dub of the show saved, in very high quality with all the music videos and music cues intact.

I appear to have found these; they have a couple of issues. For one, they are sped up to PAL, so they have a noticeable pitch shift in the original files, as well as some minor combing in other scenes. Still, great to use as reference, and once those problems are addressed they could be a definite improvement.

Things are in the works on this. Expect more news soon…

I’m that uploader and I dropped by this page to say that I am currently working on the upgrade set. I know, finally! I didn’t have the material I need to do what I wanted to do back then, but now that has all changed. Therefore, I make a promise, I keep that promise. So far, I have finished the first 3 episodes. I had to go back several times and revise the episodes in the past week and I am at a point where I am satisfied with what I have to work with. Right now, I have those episodes on YouTube for you to preview. However, those uploads are in 1080p and while they look good, they have framing flaws and I will not be keeping them. I prefer to keep this series in 640x480 at 8,000 kbps. It looks identical in quality and the big difference is the file size (2gbs roughly less per episode). Plus, the framing is correct and I just prefer it to look the way it was intended with no black border.

Anyways, hope this renews interest in this series and I hope to make some people happy with this project. There are some episodes that will unfortunately not be complete as there is currently no sourced English audio for some scenes. However, I believe that I have all of the scenes for every episode in the 26 count series. That includes bumpers and title screens. The purpose of this project is to reconstruct the series using the best possible quality that’s out there. Some episodes will look better than others but I will do my best. The music videos are all going to be restored where they need to be (I already have those downloaded). Also, the show is going to be assembled as closely as possible to its original broadcast airings. I’m ignoring as many of the re-airing changes as possible. I have a great source now to use as reference.

The original set I put together 9 years ago is garbage now. I won’t be using anything from it and recommend you who have it toss it when this project is complete. Finally, here is a link to the first YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DARkpKw5Uyc Please, expand the video description to get the link to the next video as these are unlisted on my channel.

I’m glad to hear that you are working on this. That link looks like it was copyright struck. Those old series with licensed music would probably be lost forever if fans didn’t go to the trouble of preserving them.

Any updates with your project🏆

I only found this YouTube channel from my archive research

Also, “Laser Tag Academy” videos look promising if that project too someone would attempt an upgrade🏆

Really great you are preserving the archives to view in better quality🏆

Much Thanks🏆

I’m a hobbyist and I do HD upscales of old video. I’m a professional photoshop guy and I’ve been trying to apply my skills to video in the past year.

I’m doing a few of these restorations currently, since there’s not much motion on it in most cases. Here is a sample of what I’ve done so far.

I need some help. I’m sourcing my video from kvflipside and internet archive, although there are random channels here and there that have stuff. I’ve been doing deep dive searches and really can’t find anything else…

BIG EDIT: I’ve gotten my hands on basically all of the episodes in foreign languages in pretty much in their entirety and at a reasonably high enough quality that I can restore the series, most likely. I still need english language dialogue for a couple episodes, plus other potential missing dialogues for situations I have not yet seen. However, at the moment restoring the majority, if not the entire series, looks to be very possible with the footage that I have.

I will update with a new post to the thread if I really need anything new!

Really annoying how people will do that. Hopefully they get back to you

Just a quick update to this project.

As far as I know, I have what I need to fix the entire show. At the moment I’m in possession of THREE different languages of the show, one of which is a personal collection given to me by someone who as far as I know never uploaded it anywhere. Anything missing in one language is seemingly replaced in other versions (hopefully). There is still missing English dialogue but I have a bandage for that (explained later).

I just wanted to mention that there is no guarantee that I will restore the entire series. Well, I am having so much fun doing it that I just might. However, it’s a monster task. At the moment I want to fix the episodes that have the worst damage and/or have the most problems with them.

I’ve already fixed what are basically the absolute worst ones, imo. The rest of them are simply missing music videos and a some english dialogue here and there, which I think can be fixed. I have all the music details for every missing video - all of them - for the original 1984/85 run, including exactly what parts of songs go where. (I think) all the info missing off KV Flipside’s website has been figured out. That’s it, that’s the worst of the problems with the remaining episodes I haven’t done. There are some tricky ones that require some creative editing but I’ll figure it out. There might also be some bigger traps I didn’t see yet, but I think I can resolve them.

And actually, what might happen is I might stop or slow down when I reach the KV Flipside episodes that are already uncut but have later dated (many of those are the 1986 and later versions) music videos on them. If I do those they will be made absolutely last, if at all.

If I get to that point (before I am done with the series but haven’t done KV Flipside’s already completed eps), the show is basically “saved”. All the episodes will be out there. Anything after that will be bonus material. The point is every episode will be available to see, in english, and completely uncut. Maybe not all on my channel but all readily available and free between me and KV Flipside. As a backup, I will be uploading to archive.org.

The extremely unconventional bandage for missing English is replacing with AI generated voice clones. The results are about 80% OK imo. Good enough, but not perfect. The first episode that I did this with, Master Zapper, was super shaky, and frankly watching it now it is unacceptable. A subscriber of mine found on VHS the missing English within a day of me posting that episode. So whenever I get that sent to me, it will be updated and fixed.

However, back to AI: I tried more advanced AI techniques with Euphonius and Chameleons and the result, as I said, is not terrible! “Shockingly adequate” is the term I would use. If there exists someone that has the scripts for these shows that would be handy, but at the moment I have to depend on the foreign episodes being translated and hope they are reasonably accurate.

It’s not the original lines, which does bother me because I am a stickler for keeping things accurate. But if the goal is to have nostalgic people turn the show on and enjoy them fully in English as if it was 1984 again, this does that. I most likely will also double-release episodes, leaving the missing scenes in the foreign language and subtitling those sections, to keep it  more ‘accurate’.

Here is what’s been done so far, available to watch right now:

FINALLY, a big update…

I’m done.

I finished editing all the episodes that had missing scenes that hadn’t already been uploaded somewhere else. So because it’s kind of a dumb move for your channel to upload 20 videos all at once, they are coming out every Wednesday and Saturday on my youtube channel throughout the months of September and October, just in time for the 40th anniversary of Kidd Video. Not on purpose, just a coincidence.

If it was missing on KV Flipside’s channel (as you may know, basically the only online source of Kidd Video we’ve had since 2006), I’ve edited all the found missing footage back in. All the music videos are restored as well.

If it’s not in English, I’ve either subtitled it or created AI voice clones to fill in the missing dialogue. That’s the best we can have right now until the missing English audio is found. In my opinion, it’s better to have this bandaged/created version than be stuck with the incomplete run on KV Flipside for the foreseeable future.

When they all get uploaded, you’ll notice a bunch of episodes are missing. That’s because A) someone else has the complete edited version on their channel (I don’t know that person so don’t ask me about them) so I didn’t bother to recreate their work or B) KV Flipside’s version of the episode was fine. If I have an episode that other channels do, it’s because there was still a problem with that episode (missing music or dialogue). With the exception of episode 1, I just yoinked that one, but that was already mentioned directly on that video.

In all cases when KV Flipside’s version was fine (all season 2), it is the 1986 version of the episode, not the original 1985. That’s fine. In some cases the 1986 videos have better music anyway. I most likely will eventually release a 1985 version of those episodes at some point down the line, as I do have all the music info for those versions. The point is the entire show will be COMPLETE after all the videos on my channel release. They are ALL uploaded already, they are just scheduled to release automatically.

This will be the first time in history there’s been a complete set of the show UNCUT and online in English.
