Idea: an actual 12-hour Star Wars movie... on HD-DVD

I just thought, once the blu-ray, or HD-DVD format is released, Lucas could actually edit all six films as a 12-hour movie, released as one disc, which would truly deserve the title of simply “Star Wars.” Well, he will if the fans don’t do it first. I guess it’s a pretty good bet somebody on here will take on something like this in the future.

Or alternatively he could release the movies in 'High Definition' over six discs!!!!! Gasp!!

Ooh, a laserdisc. The Cheat's playin' something on a laserdisc.
Everything is better on a laserdisc. Whatever happened to the laserdisc? Laserdisc!

Well, yeah, but you gotta look at possibilities, possibilities!

you can do that already... I have a disc with all of the SW SE on one disc... in pretty good quality... take a DL disc and you will have all 6....... so it is possible right now... no need to wait....
Do, or do not. There is no try.

um, how about screw the prequels and special editions, and further versions. How about the true original unaltered star wars trilogy fully digitally remastered and restored in high definition, without all that horrible changes and cgi garbage, and the deleted scenes released from the lucasfilm vaults. Knowing how lucas is won't happen though, but it is my hope this will happen someday. I hope the legacy of the true star wars trilogy and star wars fans will prevail, and lucas can be turned back to the good side.

I actually like the prequels and the special editions. I have grown up with both trilogies (I was 10 in 1999). I was forced to like both trilogies, and accept both as good. I have never seen the original versions of the films, or the original trilogy in theaters (even the SE). I like and endorse the changes he has made (well except for the greedo shooting first change), and will make. In fact I believe they improve the films. However, I do wish to see the original version on DVD, in respect for their huge impact on the world.

it's funny that lucas claims to be a film preservationist yet won't ever release teh originals again. These are the films a new hope and empire on the afi list, not the special editions. The very first star wars made 400 million domestically in it's first release in the u.s. and in 1977 dollars, i doubt any film could do this in today's dollars.

First release? I thought it was originally a very limited release, which was then expanded when they saw how popular it was.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

MeBeJedi your right. Back in '76 when 20th Century Fox attempted to distribute the film in the U.S., fewer than 40 theatres agreed to show it. To get more people to show it Fox said if they didn't take Star Wars they wouldn't get the right to show "The Other Side of Midnight" which was going to be a blockbuster. I think I made like 10% of what Star Wars made.

George Lucas is NOT a film preservationist, he says in his own words that he is an EDITOR. And that's pretty clear, judging by all the "editing" he's done to his original masterpieces. When Blu-Ray/HD-DVD does hit the market, you can be assured that he will re-release all six films in High-Definition. He likes money. However, he does not like us (the True fans). He feels that his original films weren't what they should have been at the time, and he will almost certainly not release the Original Original Trilogy on HD, or any other medium for that matter. More than likely, he will re-edit and digitize even more of the films, cannibalizing them further than even he has done currently. It will be up to us, the real fans, to do it. And without access to the original actual film media that he is selfishly hoarding, we can never do a true High-Definition transfer. The best thing we can hope for currently is the upcoming X0 Project, laserdisc transfers in their best possible state. George Lucas is a goon, give up on him - the Lucas that made the original films is long gone. We can only hope that Spielberg will take the initiative and contract Episode 0 from George, hopefully doing the OOT Legacy the respect it truly deserves. And maybe, just maybe, when Ol' Georgie Boy passes away, someone will open up his fantastic film vault and do a true OOT in HD/Blu-Ray, or whatever the standard is by then.

I would like the OOT and his final edits to be on blu-ray. I know, though, he would never put the OOT on DVD, as you said.

But ol' Spielberg has started in with his own pointless cinematic revisionist history and screwed with the modern "classic" E.T. (I love how even though things are referred to as "classic", which means that they're works beloved by many, infuriating changes still occur)

If he was so worried about guns, is he going to re-release Saving Private Ryan with everyone holding a rubber chicken or something?

You know I would buy Saving Private Ryan if they came out with that version!

If I remember correctly, though, he respected the fans of the clasic version by releasing both his new versions and his tinkered-with version on DVD.

Big difference. He gave us the original on DVD as well. That's what we want Lucas to do - I don't care if he makes Leia into a manwhore in his next iteration, as long as he's willing to release the original version onto the current format as well. Unfortunately, he won't do so.

Yes, it is thankfully different since the o.g. E.T. was included on the first DVD release. However, it was just recently rereleased as a one-disc version, and of course it's the new, altered version. It's nice that the original hadn't been totally ignored (probably to sate actual fans of the film so they wouldn't complain), but now it seems like it's on its way to being forgotten, and future consumers will now have to get it on ebay, or from a friend or something. Or, if enough time passes, or no one tells them about it, they won't even know it's not the original and has been tweaked.

Even though the changes were rather stupid, I thought they were relatively minor and few, so I don't understand why there couldn't be branching versions of both on a one disc release.

You know I would buy Saving Private Ryan if they came out with that version!

Me too! Or, if he changed it so it wasn't bullets, but a paintball game. And with a new title: Extreme Private Ryan.

Saving Private Ryan with rubber chickens: hell yes I'd buy that. I'd probably enjoy it more than the original.

It's funny reading through the thread I came to the same conclusion as Bongloads. I just want to outlive George Lucass so his estate can release the OT as a historical preservation edition or something.

Everytime I watch some interview with GL when he explains what he really wanted in the OT and how his changes improve things, I'm almost convinced that they're warranted.

And then I see how out of place some of it look in actual context, how CGI still looks CGI and just as fake as a muppet (maybe more fake), and I think about all the artists and SFX people that worked on the original whose work is lost and I start yelling at the TV.

I have tried many times to try to embrace the New Vision of Star Wars OT (even sat through the SE in theaters) and I just can't enjoy them.
