Idea: Torn Curtain - a fan edit?

I just thought I’d ask - has anyone here done an fan edit of “Torn Curtain” with Bernard Hermann’s original score? That would be a cool project. They could use either the original recordings or a re-recording.

This is a really good idea. I knew of the existence of the score, but didn't know it was available.

Yes- a few original Bernard Hermann recordings were completed before he was fired. Then, there was a second, complete recording. Then, there was a third recording by Joel McNeely (Torn Curtain: The Unused Score). I have never heard the two earlier recordings, though, and I think they're OOP.

EDIT: Yeah, I just checked, and the second Bernstein recording wasn't even released on CD, just LP or cassette.

I have copies of the score recordings, and though an actual mix would be impossible without a score-less track (excluding those scenes which presently play with only FX and no score) a dvd with alternate isolated scores would be possible.

I just don't really know how to do it. If someone would like the raw materials, let me know. I'd love a copy of that.

I also have a copy of 'Hitchock Notebooks' which included a cue list, if I'm not mistaken, which would come in very handy when doing the syncing.

Yes, since AFAIK, it's mixed in 2.0, it wouldn't be possible to replace the score. An isolated score version seems the best option.

HAS ANYBODY THOUGHT OF EDITING 2001 USING THE ALEX NORTH SCORE FOR THE FILM ???

KUBRICK WANTED TO USE EXISTING MUSIC WHILE THE MOVIE STUDIO WANTED AN ORIGINAL SCORE, SO THEY GOT ALEX NORTH TO DO IT. A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE THE PREMIER KUBRICK SECRETLY REPLACED THE SCORE WITH WHAT HE WANTED IN THE FIRST PLACE. AT THE PREMIER WHEN ALEX NORTH REALIZED THAT HIS SCORED HAD BEEN REMOVED. HE WAS DEVASTATED AS HE WAS AN AWARD WINNING COMPOSER THAT HAD JUST HAD HIS WORK THROWN IN THE TRASH BY A PRIMADONNA FILM DIRECTOR.

To be fair, the cues chosen by Kubrick do work rather well - some would say one of the best uses of existing music on a film score ever. However, this would also make an interesting project. I think I'm gonna do the Torn Curtain one though.

I've been a digital sound engineer for about 15 years and I would love to take a stab at putting the original Bernard Herrmann score on Torn Curtain.  I have a lot of experience in sound isolation/extraction and I'm a huge Hitchcock fan.  There is actually a way to isolate the dialog/effect portion of the movie.  Essentially, the Addison score (from the cd) can be "FFT filtered" out from the movie (part by part), which will leave the dialog/effects alone.  In order for it to work, each part has to be lined up exactly, which can take a considerable amount of time.  It's by no means a simple task, but sound isolation can be achieved if the Addison score on cd is the exact recording that is used in the film.  If parts are different, it will be a challenge and those parts may not be possible to extract.  Also, the sound quality of the isolated track will be degraded slightly by this method, but not enough to interfere with the movie watching experience.  Here's an audio sample of a the hotel scene, which originally had Addison's score playing with the dialog.  I've been able to isolate the dialog and replace Addison's score with Hermann's: http://hu.lk/eeyw6p7513qs
It's probably not cued properly.  Can you get me the cue information for Hermann's score?
