Idea: Star Wars Fan Preservations Documentary

So, I’m currently working on a bonus clip for my DeEd BD, where I briefly introduce the most important sources I used and I was thinking about what I’ll put on the separate bonus disc for the whole trilogy I got planned after all the v2s are released and I got this idea that since the DeEd is a mesh of many different fan efforts, it would be a really cool thing to have a documentary, mapping the history of fan preservations of the Star Wars films starting from early LD captures, over the early GOUT restorations and 8mm and 16mm transfers and ending with the DeEd, Project Blu and 35mm transfers. It could also mention preservations of the various documentaries and tv shows and bootleg VHS and such and of course maybe some fanedits but I’d like it to focus mainly on the projects that tried to present the films themselves in a better quality than what was officially available at the time.

Now, this is not really a fully flashed out idea, more like a spur of the moment notion but I thought it could be a cool co-operative project. There are so many talented people on these boards that I’m sure together, we could create something really cool. What do you think?

That could be cool but the Negative1 guys are calling their project that (though it's probably a working title).

Thanks for the support guys. Like I said, just an idea and these group collaboration projects somehow never really worked out yet (to my knowledge anyway) but maybe we can break that :-)

I would also be cool to get Jambe in on this.

I would also be interested in such a documentary to include information about the audio track preservations.

It would be great to just have a nice HD video showing the difference in quality of the un-enhanced GOUT (with black bars all the way around) to some of the preservations.

This is a brilliant simple idea that I'd be glad to chip in on.

It would be perfect for the front home page.

I'd prolly throw some stuff in xD, but only with a modified or synthesized voice.  My voice sounds brain-damaged.

Let us know of ways we can help.  There are various ways to approach and not sure which is best.  Can see setting out a final length for the feature (let's say half hour) then setting aside blocks of time for major steps the community has made.  5 min. intro, 7 minutes on LD, 5 for GOUT, 5 for film, 3 for misc, then 5 for summary.  Not sure if that's a beezey pace or too long...  Or is a list of the projects you feel are important gets timelined and then piece together their innovations and that becomes your backbone, length of doc ends up being whatever it becomes.  Also with this list, the ones which are unseeded or relatively lost can be put back up somewhere.

The second, I think. Making a list of important projects throughout history, preferably with links to their threads or webs would be a great first step and it's exactly what I need help with. The final length isn't really important for now. So, you guys can post suggestions and then we can discuss them and I'll always update the first post with the ones we decide on including.

Would love to be able to find the first mentioning of despecializing.

Author

Well, I did make up the term despecialize for the Partly Despecialized Edition but it is possible of course that people had been using it even before that.

Author
Time

I meant more the start of the concept not a specific word variation.  So far in these forum there has been de-SE'd ('04), de-specialed ('05) and despecialized ('10).

Author

Well, I suppose I did have a bit of a role, if extremely minor... LOL

Your voice has a brain of its own?! :)

Nah, jokes aside I think nobody likes to hear their own voice. I sure don't. But if this project progresses nicely I might be up for some kind of interview if it's needed. I imagine when new people come to this site, a documentary would be a great introduction.
