Idea: Star Wars (1977): Classic Edition

(Edited)

I am seriously considering doing a new version of the first Star Wars, as kind of a companion to my Deleted Magic disc.

I have yet to see a version of Star Wars on DVD that I was truly happy with, so I am considering doing my own.

This would be a mix of 2004 DVD footage and laserdisc footage, to match the 1977 edit pretty closely.

I would include a new version of the stereo mix, a new version of the mono mix, and possibly some sort of bonus audio track.

This is ONLY an idea at this point and I might not go through with it.

But, I’m going to put the call out. I’d like a little help with acquiring good audio sources for this …

Video will be the TR47 and the 04 DVD, unless someone can suggest/provide better …

I’d like a good copy of the ANH special edition laserdisc sound mix, I actually don’t have one … I’d like some advice on what the BEST sound source would be. It certainly isn’t the 2004 DVDs, whose sound mix annoys me to no end. Perhaps a mix of special edition and TR47 laserdisc sound?

Perhaps there are portions of the 2004 DVD that could be used without trouble? (Parts of their stereo mix?)

Perhaps someone could send me their own best edit of the soundtrack!

I might also like a copy of the isolated music mix.

I do have the sped-up PAL monomix wav, I’ll try to slow that down and put it in, make a new monomix edit, but if someone’s already done this, I’d like a copy of that as well, or at least some advice on what to look for when slowing it down, the exact amount to slow it down … not that I can’t figure that out myself I’m sure! =)

I’m on dialup, so I’m afraid that mailing back and forth is probably the way to go, but I can make it worth anyone’s while.

I do beieve the speedup of 24fps film to 50Hz(Interlaced) PAL video is 4%

The mono mix mp3 that is out does have gaps in it however and contains "Blast it Wedge". I believe that the source is the ITV broadcast, which contains some changes from the theatrical mono.

EDIT: (I'd forgotten which line was in the mono mix - Blast it, Biggs, or Blast it, Wedge ... =( )

My version hasn't been MP3ized, thankfully ...

Why frown to the "Blast it, Wedge" line? That is the line that's in the original mono mix.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Ahhh... no.

The ITV mix is a wholly seperate entity on its own. The theatrical mono is Biggs.

The ITV mix is the closest, but not perfect. Stereo and 70mm were Wedge

The bootleg VHS I have of a 1977 mono print (currently in the hands of MeBeJedi) has the Wedge line.

There's only one mono sound mix. And Luke says, "Blast it, Wedge" in it.

In the Dolby Stereo and 70mm 6-track mixes he says "Blast it, Biggs."
Greedo shoots first? Not in my DVD player.

Oh, right! Now I remember. "Blast it, Wedge" was the mono mix line. For some reason I must have been mentally retarded, temporarily, when I posted that.

.... All apologies.

Incidentally, Skot Kirkwood and I have a top-secret project coming up ... not sure if I can talk about it yet, or at all, but I'll give a hint ... it's a restoration of a famous but rare SW short film starring someone very ... short.

It would be nice to compile a list of these audio differences - it would be a boon to certain future projects.

(Along those lines, someone was telling me which soundtrack had the snowspeeder fall & crash sound in ESB. Anyone here happen to know?)

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Hi Garret.

Using the 2004 DVDs will mean to re-balance the oversaturated colors, I guess. Anyway, after the Deleted Magic, I'm sure something very good will come out of this if you finally decide to do it.

In case you decide to add english subtitles, I could provide you a spanish translation. I'm offering spanish subs to some of the OT projects that are going on because, hey, it would be nice if I could watch the movie with my non-english-speaking friends, family and, yes, girlfriend.

I also have a spanish *cough* audio track...

Now this is what I've been holding out for! Someone making their own De-SE Star Wars DVD, without being afraid to include laserdisc footage!

I mean how can you make a real, quality Star Wars DVD without? Good luck, I'll have to watch Deleted Magic sometime too.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Yes indeedy!

As far as spanish subtitles go, don't really want to go through the work of putting 'em into DVD Studio Pro 3. A spanish audio track might be cute, but I'd rather use my audio space for alternate English audio. I could, I suppose ....

I'll probably not screw with the colors on the 2004 DVD too much. It's an awful-looking transfer, very poorly done, but it would take a LOT of work to make it look any better. As mverta has found out. I'll just keep it the way it is for now ... apart from the opening shot, which will be redone. Maybe someone can steal mverta's copy for future use ...

Have you considered using a high quality version of the 1997 SE as your source, such as the G'Kar version that was made from an anamorphic digital broadcast (admittedly in PAL format)?

I believe Russ Dawson is having me look at the Gkar version of the Special Edition, for my project and for my sins.

But the plan is to use the 04, it's clearly the clearest and that is the goal, mateys.
