Fresh from the spring of eternal optimism… 
The only DVD release of this absolute masterpiece is a quite early 4:3 NTSC transfer (issued in both R1 and R4).
Some reviewers would lead us to believe that this is an open-matte transfer, but the film was in fact shot 1.66:1 for a 1.85:1 presentation (as verified by this article), so it is quite definitely cropped.
WB have been fairly reluctant to give fans of this film any hope of an official revisit, which only leaves us with a letterboxed laserdisc, and (apparently) a recent HD broadcast, from which to derive some sort of OAR version.
Does anyone in this wonderful community have access to either of these superior sources? A preservation effort would be tremendously worthwhile where this terrific film is concerned, particularly in light of its mistreatment thus far by the studio.
