You all probably know that there was a “restoration” done of Vertigo which involved tossing all the old sound effects and foaley recordings in favor of newly recorded ones. The entire mix was redone with the stereo soundtrack recordings, and the picture was restored. The picture is fabulous on the DVD, but the lack of the original mono is not. I realise that a DVD has come out recently with a very “scratchy” copy of the original mono, but…
After looking into it a bit, I discovered that the restoration was done in the early nineties; therefore, there are laserdiscs floating around with the original mono mix. Maybe even a better-quality version of it. If someone had the LD, they could either rip this mix and synch it to the DVD picture or just do a straight capture of the LD to preserve it.
I bring this up because, unless I’m mistaken, this LD has never been transferred to DVD, and Vertigo is a great movie. Even if nobody has it (or if the quality of the mono turns out to be the same), I think it’d be interesting to discuss…
