Idea: Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1992 movie sequel(s)?

How is this for a project? Inspired by wmgan’s project, this is a different take on making Buffy movies from the TV series.

I actually like the 1992 movie with Kristy Swanson better than the TV series. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed what I have seen of the TV series as well. What I might do is make a sort of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2” movie, maybe more.

Here’s how Buffy the Vampire Slayer II would start:

Probably a scene from the series set in the 1800’s, so it’s like the movie, then:

(from Season 2, Becomming, Part 1, Chapter 12): (everything is the same as the original, unless noted)
Manhattan 1992 (changed from 1996)

Whistler talks to Angel and he takes him to:

Los Angeles, 1992 (again, was 1996)

Angel pulls up in the car, rolls down the window and spies on Buffy and her friends walking and talking. (Need to change the reference to her boyfriend as Tyler into Jeffery as it was in the movie). The friends leave and Buffy sits down. (The scene ends before “Merrick” appears).

using scenes from the movie, cut with scenes of Sarah Michelle Gellar in place of Kristy Swanson. (Should be simple, since most of the time they are shown separatly anyway. Donald Sutherland as Merrick says these lines, “I was looking for you. My name is Merrick, and you have been chosen, Buffy. Everything depends on you. Now you must come with me now to the graveyard while there’s still time. Time to stop the killing, to stop the vampires.” Buffy (Kristy, offscreen) says this, “You want me to go to the graveyard with you because I’m the chosen one and there are vampires?” and he replies, “Yes.” If there’s a way to somehow make it look as though Angel is somehow spying on them in the gym, that would be cool.

Back to the “Becomming” scene, in the graveyard:

same as before, only when Merrick says his line from the show, “You see? You see your power?” he is not shown and the camera stays on Buffy. Then it cuts to her coming home.

Dubbed over is her mother’s voice from the movie, “Do you know what time it is?”, Then cut to Buffy in her bedroom, again using audio from the movie so her parents can’t be heard arguing in the background, since in the movie they went out to a party or something.

Angel is watching all of this and says to Whister, “I wanna help her.” and the scene continues on until the end.

Cut to scene from the first episode where Buffy is laying in bed sleeping. The subtitle reads, “Sunnydale, California, … months later” (not sure how much time was supposed to have passed.)

this continues on until she is talking with the principal and he rips up her LA records. After Buffy says, “It wasn’t that bad.” the whole thing about burning the school down is cut. His next line is, “OK, don’t worry. Any other school, they might say watch your step…”

Not sure where I would go from there, as I am not really familiar with the TV series that much. I’ve seen a few episodes here and there and I own seasons 1-4 and Angel season 1 on DVD so far. What episodes would be good to use for the rest of this project? If there could somehow be the scene with the death of Merrick (from the movie) and something showing how Buffy and Pike broke up, (possibly using scenes of Luke Perry from 90210 or something) that would be cool. I’m not sure what would be necessary or not to make a sequel or two to the Kristy Swanson movie using the series and possibly the Angel series. Or maybe this is just a stupid idea. Whatever. Any thoughts?

Is there a good scene where Buffy is in a gym or in any movie or show with Sarah Michelle Gellar standing by herself in a background similar to the one Kristy Swanson is standing in front of in the “chosen one” scene from the movie? Preferably a scene where she doesn’t speak?

I don't remember much of the movie so I don't know what the shot you're referencing looks like. When I was thinking about the Buffy project, I had thoughts about using the movie's introduction -- and Episode 1x03 (Witch) does feature Buffy waving pom-poms around at cheerleading tryouts that would match the ones of Kristy Swanson. I think I'll just stick to footage from the TV series, however.

The more the TV series revealed of Buffy's backstory in subsequent seasons, the more inconsistencies with the movie emerge, and the more evident it becomes that Josh Whedon does not consider the movie as part of the canon.

I'm not a fan of the movie, but I'd definitely be interested to see how your cut goes. Do keep us posted about your progress if you actually do this (as I will with mine . . . if and when I get started with it).

Yeah no problem. If and when I get started with it too. Thanks, I'll check that episode out. I should probably find a fullscreen copy of the movie to use scenes from. I might have to resort to VHS for that? I was 16 or 17 when the movie came out and I saw it in the theater, and I just thought it was cool, for whatever reasons.

how about doing the same for Angel? i prefer Angel to Buffy.
Firefly though is just pure class and doesn't need any editing of any kind!

I thoght about that too. What about making the whole entire 7 seasons of Buffy into the first sequel, and then Angel into Buffy 3?

Anybody have a complete rundown of each series in chronological order? Is there a major bad guy in either series, to the likes of Lothos in the movie?

Oh boy, you really need to see some Buffy! Each season has its own "big bad" that plays a significant role in the central plot arc of the season.

*** WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! ***

Season 1 - The Master
Season 2 - Angelus (though it seemed like it would be Spike and Drusila at first)
Season 3 - Mayor Wilkins
Season 4 - Adam
Season 5 - Glory
Season 6 - The Trio (Warren, Andrew and Jonathan), until Willow pulls an Anakin
Season 7 - "The First"

You can find episode summaries at buffyworld.com, but here's a quick rundown of each season (I guess a spoiler warning would be quite unnecessary here):

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

Season 1 - Buffy moves to Sunnydale and discovers that the town is built on a "Hellmouth" (a portal between our world and one of many hell dimensions). With the aid of her friends Willow and Xander (and eventually Cordelia), her "Watcher" Giles, and a vampire with a soul named Angel, Buffy battles the forces of evil that gravitate towards the Hellmouth. When Buffy confronts "The Master" -- an ancient vampire magickally confined to his underground lair -- she dies by drowning, and the Master is freed from his prison, which also causes the Hellmouth (which turns out to be in the school library) to be opened. Xander is able to bring her back to life by administering CPR, and Buffy kills the Master, closing the Hellmouth.

Season 2 - The vampire couple Spike and Drusila move to Sunnydale and take over the vampire lair. Buffy's death in season 1 brings forth the next slayer Kendra, whom Drusilla eventually kills. When Buffy and Angel make love, Angel loses his soul and turns back into the evil Angelus -- the gypsy curse that ensouled about a century ago also made sure that he would lose it if he ever experienced "one moment of true happiness". Teaming up with Spike and Drusila, Angelus uses the fossilized demon Acathla to open a portal that would suck the entire world into a hell dimension, and the only way to close it is to send Angelus into that hell dimension, which Buffy does -- but not before Willow (who had been dabbling in the Wiccan arts) restores his soul.

Season 3 - Kendra's successor Faith comes to Sunnydale and teams up with Buffy, while the inept Wesley replaces Giles as their Watcher. When she refuses to take responsibility for (unintentionally) killing a human, Wesley attempts to take her by force back to the Watcher's Council in England -- a failed attempt that causes Faith to change sides and work for the evil Mayor of Sunnydale. In a confrontation with Buffy, Faith is wounded and goes into a coma. As the keynote speaker at Buffy and friends' graduation, the Major undergoes Ascention (transformation into a pure demon), but Buffy ultimately succeeds in luring him to his death. Angel, who has miraculously returned to this world, decides that being around Buffy was too dangerous, and moves to LA.

Hey thanks a lot for all of your help! I just realized that in the movie Buffy is a senior. Now I have to figure out a way to keep in that way in the sequels. I just have to remove every reference to her grade until she is a senior again. She could have transfered in the middle of her senior year (in fact, yeah, in my edit that's what she did).

She's a senior in season 3.

Continuing my season summaries:

Season 4 - Buffy and Willow are now freshmen at UC Sunnydale. Buffy's new boyfriend Riley is a member of the Initiative, a military operation that captures demons. Spike is captured by the Initiative but escapes, later discovering that a chip had been installed in his head that delivers excrutiating pain whenever he tries to inflict harm on human beings. When he discovers that he can still harm demons, however, he fights on Buffy's side (although towards the end of the season he plays both sides). A human-demon-robot hybrid named Adam, created within the Initiative as a secret project that few knew about, plans to create an army of hybrids like himself by setting the stage for a war between demons and the Initiative (which according to his plan would be aided by Buffy and Spike to ensure maximum casualties on both sides). Ultimately, Buffy is able to destroy Adam after Willow performs a spell to bestow upon her the combined skills that Giles, Willow and Xander possessed.

Is anybody going to continue this project? I think it sounds like a great idea.

I've been looking around for some Buffy fanedits, can anyone point me in the right direction?
