I was reading through some fan forums last night and got an idea: what if superweapons were a motif only once each trilogy?
The basic outline could look like this:
- Prequels = the rise of the Empire as superweapon…it’s hinted at throughout the Trilogy and focusing on it in the context of character-driven films about Obi and Ani would be cohesive
- OrigTrig = the Death Star as supeweapon…it’s already there, but, visually, one could swap the half-built Death Star from RotJ with the full one from ANH. Of course this, this somewhat lowers the stakes of ANH, but the destruction of Jakku from R1 could be a stand-in for Alderan, and the ending could just be getting the plans to the Rebels
- Sequal = StarKiller Base…basically, you make the message on BB8 in TFA be The Emperor’s Message from TRoS and the mystery over the next few movies is 1) what form will his revenge take and 2) will we be ready. This would create some good build-up and recontextualize a lot of the cringier mirroring of the OrigTrig.
Does anyone know of a full saga edit that tries to create a kind of unity like this (maybe around another motif?)? Does anyone have any thoughts on this idea for a redux, good or bad?
