I know Garrett Gilchrist had 35mm reels transferred for his "Thief and the Cobbler" project, funded by donations from forum members and fans, so it can be done. Though I'm not sure it'd be wise to take prints of *these* films to a professional Hollywood facility like Garrett did; Adywan warned against it before, and we all know what happened to the print he saw a screening of a few years back...

What happened? Did Darth Lucas seize it? Sorry for being noob-ish, but I just joined. :)

Pardon my suspicious attitude, but was ESB originally printed on Fuji stock?

Fascinating that ESB reels still get out. Of course, a telecine would be amazing and the best version ever, but, as said by others, it is easier said than done. Anyone here thinking of seriously picking up those ESB reels for sale now?

take a guess!

No doubt that that would be an excellent way to telecine a 35mm Star Wars print, but 15,0000 is quite the price... I wonder exactly how prisitine and dirt-free something passed through there would look.

I don't think that would do HD. The outputs mentioned are VHS and DVD.

Hmm... that second one is about $10,000 less than the first one. Do you know why? It's strange considering the second one is the one that can go up to HD.

It seems the answer is either money or time. For what we want, there has to be a way to get it done. We just need someone with the actual prints.

well bidding on ebay was quiet. the first guy didn't even

increase his bid...  so we have another reel 3 now. interesting...

I just bought a 35mm clip of Star Wars(1977) on ebay that is currently being shipped to me.  It stated it was only a couple minutes long and featured the robots.  This sounds to me like the desert scene.

When it arrives I was thinking of making a diy slide copier and using my 8mp digital camera to capture each frame.  I guess it would take a long time to capture the frames this way but if it's under 2 minutes I think it's achievable even if it takes a couple weeks. Does anybody have any thoughts, ideas, or advice about this idea?

If it seems to be in pristine condition or something I might hold off and think about what to do with it. I imagine it is in rough shape though.

Luke threw twice…maybe.

Oh, I guess I should have asked this here:

Why is 35mm equipment so much more expensive than 16mm?

To keep it out of the hands of pirates would be one reason it is not available usually at the consumer level.

Another reason is parts and repair are costly, the build quality of the optics used is also expensive.

Sure you could get cheap 35mm surplus parts and build your own rig to make a movie, but i am sure you would be better off renting the equipment.

If Kodachrome was still available it would be better to shoot on 8mm or 16mm, but since that is phased out there is now no consumer grade even measurable by the pro level tech.

Film students and independents almost exclusively now use HD video.  Its sad but true.

Agreed, Puggo. That was awesome.

One day, we'll see a documentary like this about Star Wars.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?
