I say "put work on hold". We still dont know just what the quality of the video and audio is. If its a bit grainy or scratchy there may be another way of preservations which mesh the 2006 OOT with the 2004 SE to give us the best available transfer yet.

hmm thats an interesting way to think about it.

I still can't believe it! Lucas finally caved and hell froze over...

I'm in disbelief, relief and beyond excited! But I've still got to agree with SquashMaster! Lucas put his most loyal fans through the wringer!

Though it may have been just the color green that won it for us, maybe Lucas will finally realize that the Star Wars he gave birth to has grown beyond his petty revisionary artistic needs and belongs to the fans! If he only knew how much these movies meant to our childhoods! (last line sounds eerily close ol' Darth; oh, well...)

Congrats to all of us!!! Lucas struck us down, and we became more powerful than he could've possibly imagined!

I'm telling you right now - there better be some credit given to originaltrilogy.com because this site played a huge role in making this happen, through the petition and through the countless fan preservation projects.

So, if you will all join me for a second.

THANK YOU JAY. You did it. We did it. You beautiful bastards.

I agree 100%. IMHO ALL our screen names SHOULD be in the ending Creadets{sp?} of each film!! like they did with LOTR LongVerson.

Jay! Jay! Jay! Thanks Dude for making this site!

Being a newbie, I didn't realize Jay started all of this. I signed the petition two years ago, though. THANKS BIG, JAY!!! Job well done!

Will Jay make an announcement en masse to celebrate the victory?

I hope the DVDs are quality.

VADER: Do they have OT transfer clearance?

PIETT: It's an older transfer, sir, but it checks out. I was about to clear them.

LMAO!

Here is the USA Today article with a quote from Jim Ward. link

He says its from 1993. So whatever that means. Worst case scenario its a DVD transfer of the master 1993 Laserdisk video, which would be a bit dissapointing but still better than anything we'll ever see otherwise. The screenshots of the x-wings on the official site look very good regardless. Best case scenario its the 1997 SE print which was restored starting in 1993 i believe. Theres too little info on the video still so its hard to judge.

I saw the USA Today link but i didn't see the official StarWars.com announcement linked in this thread, so here you go...
StarWars.com Announcement

Excerpt:
In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

I guess i can pack up all of my fan restoration efforts. Is it sad that i have soooo many?

SWEET EVIL JESUS! We've been waiting for the OOT for so long and now to actually say the words beyond any doubt: "The ORIGINAL UNALTERED STAR WARS TRILOGY is being officially released on DVD..." it's almost mind-numbing.
Don't forget: with Lacuna, you can forget.

And don't forget that it's going to be unaltered beyond any other home release thus far, with even the Episode IV: A New Hope not included.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

That opening scroll is a big one--I was thinking it's going to simply be a port of the old 93 laserdisc masters, just spruced up and made anamorphic, but the old 93 masters DIDN'T have the original opening scroll to Star Wars. Hell, this is THE FIRST TIME that's ever seen official release, so I'm wondering if this is a brand new transfer or what.

Yep, the movies will be just as they were viewing in the theater in '77, '80, and '83. Truly "theatrical" versions.

I wonder if Luke's line "You're luck you don't taste very good" is back in Empire.

oh my dear sweet lordy, i can't believe it has finally happened.
halle-fskn-lujah!
i'm actually having to hold back some tears here.

cheers to all of you for all of your amazing efforts over the years. this has been one of the few star wars oriented sites on the net that i've actually enjoyed.
THANK YOU ALL!

(and shame on you georgie-boy, for being so greedy. i hope you're enjoying all that green. now go make some decent indy films!!)

is this supposed to be George finally coming back from the dark side?

Is so does this actually mean if fans put enough pressure on him he will make episodes 7-9, or at least episode 7 to end cap the series.

I can't friggin wait man!

By the way does this mean the 2004 version on the same set will be fixed?, and that we will see a remastered blu ray release of the oot in the future?

Hopefully, this is not a very bad and late april fools Joke, and we will all wake up tomorrow to find that we were all played.

i'm sure there will be plenty of reasons for fan made ots still. either lucasarts will mess something up video wise or it would still be cool to combine the dvd oot video with the 5.1 soundtrack maybe.

i also am very curious about what sort of audio choices lucasfilm will make, especially considering that there is really no such thing as a definitive OOT star wars, since there four different reels distributed to theaters opening day back in '77. but over and above that, there were SO many changes over the years ...
"we've stopped"
"most of his friends have gone"
"that one's secure?/the door's locked"
of course the infamous "The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave."
"she's beautiful. so's life, kid." <--- based on rumor?
chewie's growl at the skateboard droid
"close the blast doors."
"blast it! wedge/biggs, where are you?"
"he's on your tail"
"thanks, threepio"
"this is it"
"oh, this is suicide/there's nowhere to go"
"you're lucky you don't taste very good/you're lucky you got out of there"
"run! yes"
"who are you?"
luke's grunt
luke's scream
"bring my shuttle./alert the star destroyer to perpare for my arrival"
"star destroyer"
"it's all right. trust me. don't move./it's all right, i can see a lot better"
"we're sure in the middle of it now"

and what's really got me worried are ...
censored blaster shots?
trooper head bonk?

let's hope that we get a decent version!

Okay, so it is going to happen, just as I thought I would, and much sooner than I was expecting...

Now, let us get to the Greater Task... getting The Lost Cut released!

Actually, I wouldn't mind an official Holiday Special, either, but as much as I was expecting the theatrical versions to get their official release, I am almost certain none of the above two will. The audible demand is most likely too small for that to happen, sadly...

I can't bloody believe this, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't sleeping or if this was an april fools joke. I can't belive Lucas finally caved in. After all this time of cursing and swearing, loathing the man - he gives us what we want. It' crazy! This better be some quality work though, not some shabby rushjob to make a quick buck, no sirebob. If Lucasfilm does that, then I'm sure good old Jay here will start a new website to force Lucas into doing us right again. Anyway massive respect to Jay for all his efforts, this site has played a HUGE part in us finally getting what we so desperately NEED. Cheers m8!

AT LONG LAST, THE OOT IN DVD QUALITY - WITH HAN SOLO SHOOTING FIRST, NO FECKIN JABBA, NO LAME CGI, THE GOOD OLD EWOK SONG, NO HAYDEN HEAD ON ANAKIN, NO "ALERT MY STARDESTROYER...CRAP" AND ALL THAT SHIT. I'M SO RELIEFED. BRING ON SEPTEMBER. (although one has to be quick to pick up this new release because it will like the original of E.T. only be available for a limited time, holy cowabunga!)
peace,

By the way, I still have some small suspicions... I hope that they will not remove the semitransparent cocpits, the blue lines and other imperfections... I want the films completely unchanged.

But I am certain of one thing, and slightly less certain of another... Primo - they will remove Oola's exhibitionism, secundo - they probably will use some Photocrap halo covers instead of the original posters. GL may cave in and allow the "lasers-hit-bodies" effects to stay in, but I truly doubt he will let Oola's mistake remain as it was, unmodified.

I also wonder what the deal with the opening titles is... if the initial announcement was removed, it may indicate that changes are being prepared after all...

Holy Crap. I couldn't believe this when I read it. I am so happy for all of us. Well done, fellas, especially Jay! Thanks to all of you who have been making their own preservation efforts - I believe that you guys are the crusaders who kept the dream alive. And don't stop now! You may yet make a superior transfer than Lucasfilm does this September...God knows they should have hired some of you to restore the original film.

May the Force be with you all. Always.

And I'll continue to kick around these boards. I like you guys.

Aloha, fellow Star Wars fans.

I want to thank Jay for starting this whole website & organized internet movement. I signed the petition years ago but, I must confess. [Please don't hate me for being pessimistic but:] I never thought I'd see the day. When I found out yesterday (May 3rd, between 5:30 p.m. & 6 p.m. local time), it took a while before the truth / reality of the whole situation sank in. Am definitely happy, though. Freakin' happy. I am one happy nerd now, no doubt.

Personally, I would have hoped they would have made an exception & included the "Episode IV: A New Hope" title but, don't get me wrong. If they keep it out to be fair, I'll still take it! Can't wait for those DVDs to come out. September 12th, 2006. Man. Just can't wait. Will have to go watch my THX Widescreen VHS tapes to tide me over.

Congratulations to all of us fans who cared enough to speak out (via the petition) about getting the original versions to DVD. I don't think of it as "Lucas caved in" (I still have great respect & appreciation for the man) but I'm glad Lucas & the other powers that be are giving us what we want. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!

Now, if we can only get him to change his mind & make Episodes VII, VIII & IX. I still want to see Mark Hamill reprise his role as Luke Skywalker & take his place as the "new Yoda" amidst a new Jedi Order.

May the Force be with you.

Holy shiitake mushrooms! They are actually going to do it!

I'm in shock! I'm grateful! I'm... wow. What else is there to say?

Thank you, GL, for seeing the light.

Oh. My. Fucking. God!!!!!

I can not believe this!!!! Talk about the shock of our lives here. I pretty much gave up all hope on this!!!!

Now....I hate to rain on the parade here, but we haven't got it in our hands yet, people. He could fuck the release up somehow, for all we know. Bad transfer, messed up sound, etc.... We're not home free yet, so keep up the chatter about wanting the ORIGINALS on DVD in the best possible way!!!!

Regardless.....THANK YOU GEORGE!!!! You've restored my faith in you quite a bit!!!!

Just wondering: There have to be digitally cleaned up versions of the films, that they've used to insert the "Special Edition"-additions into, right? I mean, if I remember correctly there was a scene in the SE-promo stuff that showed a before/after comparison of Vader and one of the Admirals in the Tantive's corridor, to boast with the "newly restored image quality". So, adding new visual effects and restoring the image quality AFTERWARDS is pointless, so they have to have restored versions of the films without the SE-additions. If those are the transfers we'll get on the new DVDs, that would be perfect, right?

What exactly did LowryDigital do to the material? Did they just scan in the SEs AGAIN, and restored those AGAIN...?
