IN NEW YORK NOW...

Well, I'm going on a high school band trip starting Tuesday and ending Sunday---we are going to be performing at Riverside church-----Durring that time we'll be going to Wall Street, Grand Central, Chinatown and a few other places---is there anything of note around that I should check out?

Is it a totally planned trip? Like, is everyone always in a group doing the same stuff everywhere or do they let you go in a certain area and tell you when you need to be back at "base"...or what have you?

I was there St. Patrick's Day 2003 for a band trip and it was amazing.

We were set loose in and around the following cool places:
5th Avenue
Radio City Music Hall
Empire State Building
Central Park
Time Square
WTC hole (that's mean)
Ellis Island
Staue of Liberty

Apart from going to Hawaii for band in 2005, this was easily the vacation with the most "holy shit I didn't think I'd ever get to go to these places" moments.

Personally, I find it very exhilarating to visit the Statue of Liberty, look up, suddenly collapse on my knees and to angryly shout the following lines:

"I am home. All the time it was… We finally did it!. You maniacs! Ah, damn you! Damn you all to hell!"

As you shout these words try tilting your head slightly to the side and only focus on the upper half of the statue. If done just right it will send chills down your spine. Truly exhilarating. Seriously try it.

FAO Schwartz is pretty cool, and very laid-back (try the giant piano from the film Big out). Century 21 is a pretty thrifty shopping centre near the Millennium Hilton, and it's always good to try and catch a ferry ride around the Statue Of Liberty. If you get a chance, check out Radio City Music Hall as well.

I want to do that now. I'm actually watching that on tv now. I couldn't get the 10 commandments so I'll have to settle with apes. Perhaps this will become the replacement for the story of exodus in the future. They will think it is real too because we have the statue of liberty.

You've never seen it before? The Planet of the Apes played on the History Channel? Wow, talk about revisionist history! Those are some of the best films ever! They are the kind of movies I can watch repeatedly and never get board of.

Yeah! Is the revised planet of the apes just as good? Or should I avoid it?

Revised? You talking about the 2001 remake? Yeah, avoid it. I absolutely hated it. It is pretty painful. As a die hard fan of the old ones, I couldn't bare the new one. It follows more closely the original novel in several ways, but it is pretty crappily done IMHO. Watch all the old ones though, there are five of them. There is also a live action TV show that ran for only 14 episode, it is also very enjoyable if you liked the movies.

I liked the new one a lot in 2001 but I can assure you it's because I was 14 at the time, hadn't properly seen the older ones and was (and still are) a big fan of the works of Tim Burton and Danny Elfman (I love the hell out of the Main Titles cue). 6 years later and I have seen the original a few times and although I consider it a good movie, IMO it's no masterpiece. It's equal to me as the new one. Both have good points and bad points but I could easily see why a fan of the original before 2001 wouldn't like the new one. They have obviously a very different look and overall feel from each other and the new one is just more "amazing" to watch for most people, but nothing compares to the original ending.

BTW...the street performers in NYC range from junk to surprisingly very talented. I gave this one guy with plastic buckets and drum sticks $10 just because he was so damn awesome.

The Burton film does try to follow the plot of the book more closely. I liked the book a lot actually. In it the apes are much more modern, they even drive around in automobiles. The humans are dumb animals just like in the old film, also Nova is taken right out of the novel. But in the novel once it turns out he can talk, he becomes very popular and is welcomed by the apes. Only certain apes are plotting against him. Later it turns out he got Nova pregnant and after his son is born Cornelius and Zira are afraid his life is in danger, so they help him escape in his ship with Nova and his son. After years in his ship with his family they find earth and land in Paris (the book was written by a Frenchman) he is very excited to be home, even though he knows a couple of thousand years have passed since he left. After his ship lands he finds out that earth is now run by apes. The end. So it has a bit of the old and the new (or rather, they both have bits from it) but the ending of Burton's film is very clearly inspired by the book.

I had seen the previews for the 2001 remake and never had any interest to see it. I had also heard from friends that it was awful. Finally a couple of months ago I watched it for the first time, and couldn't believe how much I hated it. Especially lines borrowed from the old film, like "Get you hands off me you damn dirty human" that was pretty painful to watch. The worse part is where that female monkey is dancing for her husband as they are gettng ready to have sex. At that moment I felt embarressed to be watching the film on account of its lameness.

Written in 1963 by Pierre Boulle. Pretty good read. It has also been translated as Monkey Planet.

And to pull this thing back on topic (sort of), I bet there are countless copies of this book available in NY's vast quantity of used bookstores.

I have never seen any of the originals, but I have seen the 2001 version and thought it was decent.
