I need some tech help with my smartphone(was: Anyone here know anything about smart phones?(was: Anyone here know anything about cell phones?))

I think I am finally going to break down and buy a cell phone. It will be used rarely and for emergencies. I don’t need anything fancy. I was thinking of buying one of those “pay as go” plans. Does anyone have any suggestions?

edit: no sexist jokes or discussion of politics allow here.

I was in the same position as you during early 2002. My dad was driving my car, late at night on a dark stretch of highway and had a blowout...in December...on the driver's side (which, as it happens, was the traffic-side when he pulled off the road.)

In my experience, pay as you go might not be what you want. Its been a while since I looked into it, but minutes you buy actually will expire after a while, possibly leaving you stuck.

Then I found this site:
http://www.emergencycellphones.com

To sum it up, any cellphone, activated or not, is capable of making 911 calls AND cellphone operator calls, which can get charged to a credit card at a very high per-minute rate. However, if you're expecting to talk maybe 5 minutes every couple months, the cost turns out being significantly lower than a normal cell plan.

I read up on it and bought a cellphone and charger off Ebay for something like $15. I never actually had to use it, but it did make me feel better.

(Eventually, when my sister went to college, my family boughther a real cellphone and a few months after, we decided to get 2 more with verizon's family plan, one for me and one for my mom. That was almost 2 years ago now.)

Well every once and awhile I would probably want to use it to call places other than 911, so I don't think those emergency phones are right for me. But thanks for the info Starkiller.

I've been in your shoes before too.

Try Verizon wireless. If you just want a basic phone, no picture options or anything except calling, you can get a relatively cheap phone, and they're very good with plans, so that's where I'd start.

I also wouldn't have gotten a cell-phone but the rest of my family decided to go for a family plan so I basically ended up with a $20/month bill and roughly 1000 minutes to myself because no one else really uses theres. This was two years ago and my usage has gone up a lot but never the price. So for now, I'm satisfied. Hell, i'll prolly stay on the plan for as long as possible, maybe into my twenties (i'm 19 now) just cuz it's worked so nicely. I feel more comfortable on long trips in increasingly aging vehicles.

Hey look, a bear!

Another one to look at is T-Mobile. They used to have a basic plan that was pretty cheap, that would be good if you aren't going to use it much. However, the only problem with them is that their coverage isn't as good as the other companies.

If you are hardly going to use it the "pay as you go" plans are by far the best. Buy a ten dollar card and it lasts you about two months. Can't beat that. The actual rates on the minutes is not the best but compared to paying $20 a month for an awesome plan that will never be used, five or ten dollars a month is hard to beat, and you are not under contract either so you can just junk the phone if you ever want a new one. I use the pay and talk method because i only occassionally use my phone and even in a busy month i never use any more than 15 or 20 dollars on it, usually ten, which i think is a good deal for myself and probably for you too Warbler. I would check into it.

Hey there.

I saw your post about how you were looking for a prepaid cell plan. I recently found a deal where you can get a Nokia cell phone and 200 minutes of usage for only $20 and I suggested it to a friend of mine to give to her 13 year old son. She's been thanking me up and down since as it was perfect for him.

If you're interested in the details, I can send you a link. Just email me directly at rwafford1 at yahoo dot com .

I don't benefit from this at all. I've got my own standard plan. Just thought I'd share.

That it is...but the K800 has a 3.2 mega pixel camera, which for a phone, is super. Yes I said super!

Also, you stick in a 1gig memory card, not only do you have a phone, a super camera, you also get a half deceny mp3 player....all rolled into one snazzy looking phone...yes I said snazzy!!

Sorry Warbler, although I have a kickass phone I really don't know anything about plans in the USA. In fact, I'm hoping to get some good info from this thread myself so when I finally ahve a job and some money I can get a good plan (but keep my existing phone).

I have a Razr, but you might not like it because it's really thin. I just got it so I wouldn't have 2 buldges in my pants, oh!

Apart from looking fairly cool I heard those RAZRs were crap.

I wouldn't know why. It's only flaw like I said, is that it's really thin.

So old people tend to dislike them.

I’d change the title of this from cell phone to smart phone, but I don’t know how to change thread titles with the new software.

Anyway,

What does everyone think of this smart phone, the LG X Charge?

Here is a review, but it goes into a lot of tech detail of which I do not understand. Perhaps someone here more tech savy can help:

I looked up that phone and didn’t find much about it. I can’t really make a judgement on it. Why did this particular phone pique your interest?

I’m not sure you could call that a review. In fact, I’m not sure what to call it or what it is.

hmm, Jay must have changed that in an update. Late time I tried to change a thread title, I could only edit the first post and not the thread title.

I think it only works on Comcast’s new cellular network. That might be a problem. What price range are you shooting for?

about the price of this phone. I am willing to join comcast’s network. We already have our cable, internet, and land lines through them.

Well, if you don’t care about having a stellar phone, then, yes, buy it.
