I heard the 2006 set with the GOUT is now gone... — Page 4

The DC copy of the book never had a slipcover. Factory sealed boxes were so tight it probably would have shredded shoving it in!

I gave up on trying to get the discs back in the box, and store them separately to this day.

They must have fixed the box at some point, because I have no trouble storing all the contents in mine. Mine is a later pressing because it has the corrected esb disc. One of my ROTJ discs has some rot, though. :-/

I kept the uncorrected version. (It's rare!) The LD jackets split open almost immediately.

You'll find it eventually. Check eBay & Amazon frequently. Plus, you can always get d_j's version, or the Lucasfilm Pwnage version.

Those DC LDs are notorious rotters, but the book alone is worth the price you paid, even if the discs are no good. My book didn't have a slipcover, either. I got a used set, too, so I'm wondering if the books in that set even had slipcovers to begin with?

Noo....NOOOOOOO!! I don't know much about LD deterioration over time. I hope the discs are okay (to the naked eye they are, but one can't see oxidation on the disc), but I may never even know...

For some reason I thought the book at a cover in some images or youtube videos I've seen, but I think I was mistaken.

Again, for $20 it's a great, great find.

As for the LE discs, I don't want to pay out of the wazoo for them. I'm kicking myself a bit because even 6 months ago I could have gotten them. The re-released trilogy pack from 2008 has been cheap for a couple years ($30 on amazon) and now it's under crazy demand. Today I went to two Barnes and Noble stores, two Targets, and a Best Buy. No luck for the individuals or pack. One B&N checked and said it was recalled in April, just when pre-orders for the blu-ray began. I wish I had the foresight to snatch those dvds up.

I haven't really been into SW much for a couple years in that the last SW products I bought were the 2004 dvd set and 2005 ROTS dvd. Sometime around 2006 when those LE discs came out I resolved to not give Lucas my money for them because it wasn't a proper release. I didn't want to buy the 2004 versions again to get a "bonus feature." Yet, now we see that the UOT most likely won't see any future release. Then again, we've all thought these things before and I would not be surprised if in a couple years Lucas releases the UOT on blu-ray. If that happens George will have fooled me again!

If you run your thumb around the edges of the discs, there should be no perceptible space between the layers. If you feel a separation, that means the glue is deteriorating and you'll probably have some rot on those discs.

Honestly they seem ok to me. Can't detect any spaces. There is a bit of what appears to be small specs of glue on a few disc edges in a trivial number of spots, but the discs do appear to seem in good shape.

Only one way to find out, though!

Thanks to the people who contributed to this report. I think it is worthwhile news as far as our cause is concerned and I'll be posting it on savestarwars.com. Hell, even the guys nostalgic for the 2004 version are having to eat shit now! I feel like the Star Wars fanbase is slowly re-uniting under a mutual disgust for all the changes. If you read on Amazon.com all people talk about is how they miss the original versions--that never really happened before, on this scale. This could definitely fan those flames.

Just in case anybody still wants the GOUT, but doesn't want to deal with Ebay or Amazon, yesasia.com seems to still have them in stock, and for different regions. The hitch is some of them are the Pan and Scan SE discs, but the GOUT is letterboxed anyway. ;)

Has anybody ordered from yesasia.com and had success? Site looks untrustworthy and has some bad reviews on eopinions, resellerratings, etc.

The R1 dvds say 7-14 days to ship. Makes me wonder if they even have them in stock.

Brr. I ended up rebuying Empire from yesasia since it seems my copy's been lost or lent out never to be seen again. There are lots of new copies of the P&S version on ebay for a few $$$ cheaper...but I refuse to buy P&S and wanted all the covers to match up. Kinda sad, really; I'm never gonna watch the things now that we've got Harmy, d_j, ady's avchds &c. except maybe for the commentary on the 2006 disc. I suppose if I keep it shrink-wrapped it'll be worth a lot in a few years, unless George relents

georgec: well someone in this very thread already vouched for them. 7-14 days is pretty standard for all these HK/Chinese operations

SilverWook mentioned yesasia's website says the discs are in stock but I don't see any posts about receiving shipments from them.

You received your Empire disc in good condition and in a timely manner?

I've got a bad feeling about this. I'm more worried about giving a CC number to this website.

No, I just ordered now. I looked through the thread again and nobody vouches for it here, but someone did in a different thread I closed. Let's see if I could find it.

With these Chinese sites, long wait times and no tracking is the order of the day unless you pay a premium for shipping.

No, I was right. SilverWook said "I ordered a hard to find title from them last summer, and was pleased with their service." on page 3

But anyway listen, there are plenty of these on ebay. If you only care about the GOUT bonus disc, then you could get brand new P&S versions of the films for $10+shipping on ebay right now. (I'm just too pigheaded to save the $8.) Used widescreen versions will cost more than a new version from yesasia, but you'll get it quicker.

I ordered from yesasia back on June 21st, it was shipped on the 24th. I got the disc in the mail July 2nd. I did not pay for any premium shipping, either.

I'm on the West coast, so your shipping time may vary.

Oh dear. I ordered from YesAsia on September 7th for the Region 1 widescreen trilogy based on the recommendation from this thread. Hope I haven't made a mistake.

Can I cancel my order with this site?

That's pretty fast delivery, the disc you ordered was still listed as in stock when I last checked, even though it isn't as I would get a notification from them when it happens. Pretty common of sale sites doing so but very irritating.

Many people I know who have done business with yesasia haven't had any problems with them.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I only see the P&S version on ebay for $20.

Anyway, I'll probably take the plunge. I've checked B&N availability and there are copies in a B&N near my brother and one a little further from my parents. I'd hate to ask them...

You know what I find the supreme irony of Star Wars?

There was never some huge petition to get the original theatrical versions of Close Encounters, Apocalypse Now, or The Exorcist released on home video. But when those flicks hit blu-ray the original versions were included almost as if it went without saying.

Or take any modern new release title that gets a director's cut on home video. More often than not, the theatrical cut is at least made available (they usually just throw it in the same package, again, as if it went without saying).

The special edition of Star Wars is so well-known that it's entered pop culture. "Greedo shooting first" is probably the most infamous change ever made to a film. I don't think I've ever met anyone who knew about Star Wars and didn't know it had been revised. I would suspect only kids who are like 5 right now have no clue about the history of the films.

That's what makes the situation so ridiculous and why I'm convinced this is all about Lucas milking Star Wars. As others have said, he knows that giving us a pristine restored OOT would be like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Because it should go without saying, but those movies don't have a enormously arrogant director/writer to think the changes they make now improve stuff made in the 70's/80's. In all honesty it SHOULDN'T kill the goose as there will always be a better format to release the OOT on.

Ordered ANH from yesasia.com

Status is "Waiting for Stock: We have ordered your item from a local or overseas supplier and are waiting for it to be delivered to our warehouse."

That doesn't sound good. I didn't think they had these discs in stock to begin with. The product pages say shipping is expected in 7-14 days, so that might be another way of saying "Out of Stock."

After learning that the 2006 set was OOP and learning about the changes in the Blu Ray set I went on a mad dash to the Half-Price Books and other used media stores.  Managed to pick up all 3 movies for about $40. Still cheaper than going through Amazon, I think.

Has anyone else had success in the 2nd hand market?  Maybe there will even be an influx of these discs when people trade in after picking up the BR set?

Well I can forget my troubles, I cancelled my order from YesAsia and got refunded. Instead I got the Pan & Scan ones going relatively cheap on eBay from a seller with a 99.9% rating. ANH is unsealed but is described as "Like New", and the other two are sealed, so I think it should be okay.

Oh man, when I tell my friends I'm searching for the '06 DVD, they're like "What? The Blu-Ray is coming out soon!" to which I reply "Well, you see, I ain't touching that because..." and you get the idea.

Yeah, but who knows when or what that will even be. I kinda doubt there will be another physical format after blu-ray, but who knows? If they could figure out how to get a 4K file onto a disc I'd probably invest in it (eventually, when I could afford it), but I don't know how the industry would pull that one off. It wouldn't happen for well over another decade at the earliest, if at all.

Don't get me wrong, a new 4K format would offer some big advantages: increased resolution, better color space, and maybe even a true 24 fps playback (and not the 23.976 that almost all blu-ray titles have for backward compatibility with older hdtv's).

But let's not forget two big things. 1) the theaters and multiplexes will always stay at least one big step ahead of the home video industry, and 2) a lot of new releases made over the past decade have only gone through DI and had their effects done at 2K resolution, not 4K.

If the day comes when there are 30 million 4K televisions out in the wild, it'll be time to start thinking about a new format. Until then, blu-ray is "good enough" for the most part.

Well I'm just kicking myself now. Had my eyes on an auction on ebay and was going to bid within the last 30 min. I was working on something, lost track of time, and missed the end of the auction by 3 min. Looks like I may have gotten a decent price, too. :(

Yesasia is alright, they're not scammers. Not my preferred import shop but they're not going to take your money and run. :)

So the pan & scan versions have the same letterboxed GOUT disc as the WS versions, correct? I'll keep an eye out at Walmart/Best Buy/etc or whatnot the next time I go out that way. Stores are too far from my house to go check whenever I want. :(
