I heard the 2006 set with the GOUT is now gone... — Page 3

I'm not subscribed so I can't read the whole thing. Six years could mean from 2005, but they didn't actually start airing it until 2008, so it could also mean 2014.

The EOD doc is the only reason why I didn't immediately dump my 04 box set. And so it still sits on my shelf for me to glare at.

The GOUTs can still be found in some stores for 10-15 each. I still see them in Targets occasionally. They are now mixed in with single 04 discs as well.

I haven't seen any of them in stores for a while. They officially went out of print in early May, right around when the cover art was revealed.

Since I did buy them all, I'm really tempted to find the best upscaled version with different audio mixes just so I can easily make copies for my friends who will be spared from having to consider wasting their money on more crap from LFL.

Is there any consensus on what the best fan made dvd from the 2006 discs is?

Yeah, I know that's piracy but in this case, George Lucas deserves it.

I actually spotted a factory sealed copy of the '04 Trilogy in the wild tonight. It was at an indy record shop that has a DVD section, tucked away in a glass case with some other box sets of recent vintage. It was less than sixty bucks.

I checked their used DVD section while I was at it, and only saw two copies of the prequels.

The general consensus is that Harmy's Despecialized and Dark Jedi's V3 are the best.

Harmy's Despecialized is an ultra detailed restoration of the theatrical versions by combining the 2004 HD Broadcast with a plethora of many other sources. It is currently available online on tehparadox and myspleen in HD, so you may want to check this out.

Alternatively, there are Dark Jedi's V3s which are amazing upscales of the GOUT and have every audio track ever released on them in fantastic quality. These are available on myspleen.

I dunno I think the cover for the 2006 GOUT is much worse even than that. Ugh

Really? I prefer the 2006 cover to this cover. They're both awful though...

lol, matter of taste, i suppose. the 2006 covers have horrible, horrible proportions. it's like the guy designing the cover had no frikkin' clue what 'perspective' is!

I have the GOUT, but I will not buy another copy for back-up. I will not even buy a copy of a properly released OOT (if it ever happens). Lucasfilm will get no more money from me. Ever. If my version of the GOUT is lost, stolen, or stops working it will be sayonara to Star Wars for me.

It will probably be for the best.

If that happens to me i have non rotten laserdiscs which will probably never rot since they were pressed in japan.

The faces laserdiscs.  The Definitive USA printing is a definite rotter, my japan set has none.

My Japan special collection discs play as new as well.

I would love to get these, can anybody help me out with a myspleen invite?

Just in case anybody still wants the GOUT, but doesn't want to deal with Ebay or Amazon, yesasia.com seems to still have them in stock, and for different regions. The hitch is some of them are the Pan and Scan SE discs, but the GOUT is letterboxed anyway. ;)

Actually, how does that work?

Were the bonus discs exactly the same on the P&N sets?

Yes.

You didn't expect them to spend more money to make a pan and scan version of a 1993 letterboxed Laserdisc master did you? ;)

And besides, I think it'd be more worthwhile to get the Pan & Scan SE with the Letterboxed GOUT, because that way, the SE has an honest disclaimer in front of it: This film has been modified from its original version.  I'll say!

A couple B&N stores near me apparently have ESB and ROTJ 2006 dvds in stock. No ANH. Same for used movie/record stores.

Should I buy these discs? I've searched endlessly on the web and can't find screenshots of the non-anamorphic transfers. I would like to know how good/bad the quality really is before making my purchases.

The anamorphic fan-edits don't look that much better than the original GOUT, and there's tons of screenshots of those around.

Here's ton of shots of Episode IV: ***The NEW "official" Screenshots thread ***

Though screenshots don't do it justice, since the DVNR isn't as noticable when it's not in motion.

Here's a few places where it is noticable in stills: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...?

If you want them- better get them while you can. I own 2 sets, which I got before dark_jedi's anamorphic Gout came out, but they serve now as backup in case the dye layer in my d_j versions craps out at some point in the future. :-P

Not the best presentation, but I have few uploads on YouTube from the GOUT. It will give you an idea, though they're not NEARLY as good of course as the actual discs:

Thanks, Mielr. They look okay to me, and as you mentioned the actual discs are better in reality. The ESB emperor clip looked especially good.

It stinks that I can't find the LE of ANH.

Well, I have a cool story for you all. I went into Half Price Books today to see if they had used copies of the 2006 LE discs. No dice. Although I bought the 1989/1990 laserdiscs last week for really cheap from another used music/movies store, I figured I'd check out the LD selection at HPB. It's quite small next to the records - maybe 30 or 40 titles.

Yet, upon approaching the section from the side, I saw a thick black box sitting in there. Could it be? I walked closer. Was it really? Sitting in front of one of the rows was the 1993 Definitive Collection. I checked it out, verified the contents, and purchased the damn thing. It was $20 which seems like a great deal - typical price is anywhere from $50 to $200 on ebay, based on condition.

The box is a little dinged up on the corners but that's perfectly fine for me. The book is missing its slipcover but again not a big deal. The previous owner even included what must have been the backside paper slip in the shrink wrap.

So, I'm happy. I still will try to get the dvds, but finding this set was a really pleasant surprise. Hell, who knows if I ever watch them? I don't think I'll be buying a laserdisc player anytime soon. Still, good catch for $20.

I look for the same thing whenever I'm at a Half-Price Books. Great find!

Great deal! I bought that set new years ago in the mid 90's. I don't remember there being a slipcover for the book. I'll try to check mine out later and see.

I never had any of the OT prior to the 93 Definitive version. So, I keep looking for those when I visit HPBooks too. On a side note, I did see the first 3 Raiders/Indiana Jones films on LD at the HPB in Mesquite, TX last week. But I already have those.

You'll find it eventually. Check eBay & Amazon frequently. Plus, you can always get d_j's version, or the Lucasfilm Pwnage version.

Those DC LDs are notorious rotters, but the book alone is worth the price you paid, even if the discs are no good. My book didn't have a slipcover, either. I got a used set, too, so I'm wondering if the books in that set even had slipcovers to begin with?

The DC copy of the book never had a slipcover. Factory sealed boxes were so tight it probably would have shredded shoving it in!

I gave up on trying to get the discs back in the box, and store them separately to this day.
