The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

I'm honestly surprised more things aren't being phased out from DVD, with it being killed off by a combination of streamed movies and Blu-Rays.

As for the Star Trek set, I didn't know they were phasing out the DVDs, but they also had the original effects on the Blu-Ray through seamless branching. I'm not sure if they redid the crossfading between episodes though.

Yep. We checked Target, not a one could be found. This "rumor" seems pretty legit =|

Speaking of Target, a few months ago, I picked up an edition of ANH that had the cover of the '04 DVD and not the '06 set. Were they ever selling the DVDs of the '04 individually or is it just a wrongly packaged '06 disc? I haven't opened it yet.

The cover looked like this:

Wow, I'd forgotten how horrendous that cover art was.

No, they did sell the '04 release individually as well.  The box set just had the Bonus Features disc with the Empire of Dreams documentary.

Ah got it Sluggo. I've just been wondering for a while and you've answered my question. It is horrendous cover art though...

That means you got this set and not the original 2004 one. I actually ended up getting that set too because I wasn't sure if it had more alterations and wanted to see... I actually thought the documentary was pretty informative; you could probably pick it up on eBay.

Just informative?  I thought the EOD doc was the best thing LFL released in a LONG time.

Well yeah... I just didn't want to oversell it; however, it is worthwhile viewing. You get to see the original Star Wars crawl as well as non-2004 footage... The interviews are quite nice to and you even see an ANH deleted scene. On the whole, it's very candid.

I checked the Amazon marketplace, and the pickings are getting quite scarce for the GOUT.  There aren't many sellers for the discs, and the prices have gone way up - $25 bucks a pop is the average even for a used copy.  LFL must really be trying to bury these.  For instance, the Tartakovsky Clone Wars discs have gone out of print as well, but there are many, many used copies available for really cheap - like $5 a pop.  The lack of GOUT offerings tells me that LFL really wants these out of existence.

Now, they made a boatload of these discs when they came out, so they won't be "gone" for some time, but one might have to get creative to find them.  I tried selling my GOUT copies to the local record store (yes, they still exist, and some of them are doing quite well), and they wouldn't take them because they had way too many on hand.  Truth be told, there's not much value in the discs, and not because of the impending blu-rays.  The high price and slim offerings seems like LFL is manipulating the market to make the remaining copies harder to get.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

When the 2006 dvds came out I committed to not buying them because it was another cash grab. Now I'm trying to track down some copies for myself. I found ESB and ROTJ brand new at a local used record/cd/dvd store for $15 each. I may go back and pick them up, but for some reason I still feel that I've bought enough SW home releases and that having torrents of the UOT burned to dvds will be good enough.

I bought that too. :-)

I also bought another set of them as backup (sans tin) from Amazon when the prices went down.

I remember SOMEONE here making fun of me for that at the time. ;-)

Though, I don't really watch them now that I have d_j's anamorphic versions. I'm still glad I got them, though. I was thinking recently about selling my second set, but instead I think I'll get rid of that 2nd set of Faces LDs I bought ages ago.

Now I kind of wish I'd bought that set too. Who knows if we'll ever see that iconic art used for the movies again.

I dunno I think the cover for the 2006 GOUT is much worse even than that. Ugh

Really? I prefer the 2006 cover to this cover. They're both awful though...

Idunno. Seems to be just another case of...well...whatever it was Disney was trying to achieve when they withheld copies of Tron when Tron 2 was coming out.

I think the official unofficial word was that Tron 2 did much better with test audiences who hadn't seen the original, or hadn't seen it in a very long time. On one hand, I can definitely see this applying to the Star Wars Blus. On the other hand, I don't think this will work in the same way (especially at such short notice).

Seems to me that LucasFilm is panicking, and doing a last-ditch effort so that people can't boycott and buy the old editions instead. I'm not sure how much it'll help, but at least they won't run into issues of "The 04/06 are outselling the BDs!"

I've come up a few theories:

-The GOUT DVDs could return later in 2012 (maybe with new covers) cause like Asaki said, so the DVDs won't outsell the Blu-Rays

-Possibly when the Blu-Rays of IV-VI are released individually, they'll contain the GOUT disc as some sort of DVD copy but with the added benfit of it being the theatrical version (cause I don't see the 2004 version being the DVD copy)

-Maybe since with the uproar of the changes to the Blu-Ray, Lucasfilm is maybe secretly considering remastering the OOT for Blu-Ray and DVD (I know it sounds stupid, but it's just a theory)

I think its more that Lucas sees DVD/BD as the same format, and since only one version of Star Wars is allowed per format, they're cleaning the shelves for the "digitally remastered" (2011) version of the movie on DVD. The GOUT was supposed to be unavailable January 1, 2007, it's overdue to go back.

As much as I wish that its so they can actually release the originals in decent quality, I doubt it.

One reason could also be that the DVDs also included 2004 SE which is now being replaced by the 2011 SE.

Which makes me wonder when the Spike deal expires, as those are also still the 2004 versions.
