I have seen the Holiday Special!

Well about 30 minutes of it. It's so bad it makes Phantom Menace look like Gone With the Wind. Horrible. Nasty. Not even Jar Jar could have made it worse.
George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

In my opinion both are crap its which is the lesser of two evils,in the Holiday Special at least you have Han,Luke Leia and Chewie etc, I lasted about the whole duration,ut some of it does make you wish you were watching the great Jar Jar Binks himself and all of the fart and poop jokes that go with him, but I would have go for Menace anyday at least it has a little more relevance to the Classics and has more redeeming features.

By the way, I still didn't watch that bizarre animation sequence cut from the Holiday Special that was posted here some time ago. It sounded quite creepy and scary, so I didn't back then.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

The Holiday Special isn't so bad, from a certain point of view. The most interesting thing is its portrayal of a typical family in the Star Wars universe. What their lives are like, what they have to put up with from the empire, that sort of thing. It isn't great entertainment by any stretch of the imagination, but it is interesting. The cartoon is the best part of it. It also has a certain cheesy charm to it, not unlike MST3K movies.

That's about where I stopped as well. Good thing, too, as it's the SW equivalent of watching "The Ring".

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.

Yeah, it's so bad, so crappy, so..... I love it!

In the same kind, you MUST listen the "Christmas in the Stars - Star Wars Christmas Album". Within, C-3PO AND R2-D2 sing some Xmas songs. It's pretty much as bad as the "Holiday Special"... You gonna loving it!

I've seen a version with commercials on P2P networks that has original commercials. It is an .AVI or something like that. As for a quality DVD release with original commercials, I don't know of one. There are several different copies of the Holdiay Special, from VHS copies when the show first aired, and therefore no one real set of "original commericals" because it would depend on the particular TV station that aired the show as to what the commercials would be. If you want a cleaned up copy of it, the best one is supposed to be from Rikter, the "KCCI version" that is reported to be from a broadcast tape. The only commercials included is a kenner toy commercial that did air with the show.

EDIT: Missed the reply from Russs15 above. Apparently there is a DVD version with the commercials left in. There are several different copies of this floating around, of various qualities.

I actually remember watching The Holiday Special when it was originally shown. I don't remember much, cause I was 6 years old, but I do remember they showed a bunch of wookies interacting with Chewbacca or something like that. Maybe that is why Lucas scrapped the Wookie Planet in Jedi!

You know, when you really get down to it, and get past all of the silly aspects of the holiday special, there really is something there that does what Lucas intended it to do originally. Originally, his idea was for it to tie together the plots of ANH and ESB through the story of this holiday special. Well, what actually happens does do that pretty well. You basically see Vader attempting to hunt down the rebels responsible for the first death star's destruction. Yes, it does turn out to look very stupid, but that IS what happens. I mean, they actually blockade Kashyyyk and all in their search. Seems like a somewhat worthy piece of star wars history to me.

I didn't think that Lucas was very involved in the Holiday Special. He basically gave permission to it sight unseen. Thats why after it, he pretty much insists on being involved in anything that includes Star Wars/Indiana Jones characters.

According to an old "Filmfax" magazine, he wrote the story and was quite involved with the Fett cartoon, but didn't have the time for anything else. He apparebnt;ly sat down with the producers and created a basic plot outline. He did in fact intend the basic story to be there, of Chewie returning to his family for Life Day, and be evading the empire. What they (the producers Ken and Mitzie Welch) did was take HIS script and basically rewrite many scenes without his knowledge or approval. And the original director, David Acomba, was fired at the very start due to "creative differences." Acomba was an old roommate of Lucas' in college, and knew his ways, and what he expected pretty well. What happened was with a horrible script, 20th century fox made the producers/directors film what had been written. And the actors didn't question the producers, Mark Hamill said he merely was "making those above him happy." When Lucas saw the finished product, he was horrified. I mean, the basic story was still there, but the format he had originally envisioned was destroyed.
