I have an idea for a new petition.

Author
Time

Besides petitioning the OOT negatives restored and transferred on DVD and Blu-ray in anamorphic widescreen, lets petition for George Lucas to give rights to other studios to remake the prequels with competent writers and directors.

Author
Time

Then, who would we send this petition to? George Lucas? Like he'd care.

The only thing that motivates GL now is $ and power, and those of us who didn't pay to see Clone Wars sent a very strong message that said "no more of your crap, George". That's a lot more powerful than signing a petition. The movie only made about $38,000,000 which is a lot less than he was expecting.

Author
Time

dude, I'm being sarcastic, play along.

But seriously speaking, don't you wish someone could remake the prequels? I would rather pick a stranger off the streets, than to have Lucas remake them.

Even though Clone Wars made far less than Lucas was expecting, it still made more money than it costed to make. Until his stuff starts to bomb, I don't think he will give in.

Sarcasm rarely translates to print. Try a ;-) or a [/sarcasm] next time.

I'd consider this a bomb. I don't care what the budget was. I mean, The Love Guru made thirty-eight million. :-P

Lucas was hoping for at least $100,000,000

New petition.  Petition Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to retire and quit ruining star wars and Indiana Jones!

How much of Indy 4 was actually Spielberg's doing, though?  I remember a great quote from him back when TOD was out...

Well, the thing I like about working with George is that if the film fails then I can say he made me do it, and if it's a hit then I can say it was my idea.  :-)

Of course, I'm sure there was some sarcasm in there the way he said it, but sarcasm always has an element of truth to it.

(all kidding aside)

My dad recently got an HDTV, and the '04 discs look so good that it hurts to not have the original versions in comparable quality.

When I first clicked on this thread several days ago, I thought I was going to find that someone had finally drafted an actual petition. If someone can just make a good argument as to why we want the OOT in decent quality, then we can go from there on what exactly we want.

Okay, come on, a remake of The Phantom Menace with Guillermo del Toro in the director's chair! How awesome would that be?!

Of course, we might as well also put a clause in said petition requiring Bruce Campbell to be on the Jedi Council.

Maybe because every other classic movie that has had an impact on cinema has had a decent quality release?  And it's 2008, so maybe it's about time this classic get its decent release?  Why the hell do we need a good argument for the OOT to get a decent release?  And why do we have to specify exactly what we want?  Blade Runner got a good release as have countless other movies.  Why is Star Wars the only one that seems to be neglected?  Because Lucas simply does not care.

We don't need a new petition.  Lucas needs to simply wake his ass up and realize that there is a market for a much better release.  Not only would I buy it in a heartbeat, but I'd probably start buying more Star Wars merchandise again.

It's the destiny of SW to never be released in good quality. Just accept the fact that the GOUT is the only place future generations will ever get to see the original versions of the SW trilogy (or at least a pre-SE version of it). It's a real shame that that we are powerless to see the slow destruction of the SW and Indiana Jones franchises, and they haven't even hit rock bottom yet. It astonishes me that Lucas is ripping off Tartakovsky's Clone wars series (which IMO is the only good thing that has come out of the vast PT wasteland), because in the end he failed to put the events of the Clone Wars into the PT themselves. Forty years from now whatever fans will be left of the OOT (which could be as few as ten or fifteen people) will still be yearning for a decent release of the OOT. Unfortunately, we are a dying breed. Every year there are fewer and fewer dissidents against the PTSE and more TFN apologists. As much as I hate to say it, but the OOT was given a death sentence in 1997 and is doomed to suffer the same fate as many films from the silent era.

I don't know about you, but between myself and my friends, we'll always be fans of the OOT and we simply won't care if Lucas never releases it in a "proper" way.  As time goes on, we dislike the PT (which most of us don't even acknowledge) more and more.

Oh I see.  So myself and my 10 friends will be the only OOT fans left in 40 years?  I doubt that.

Man, those would be two of the most amazing things. In a perfect world...

No way man, only nine of your friends (wow, this is kind of like the JWs and the 144,000), I am a young whippersnapper and I fully intend to still be around in 40 years, and if there is still no true release of the OOT, I will still be disappointed about that 40 years from now.

I'd almost be willing to give up a testicle just to see THAT movie!

Very well, I too will consider the possiblility a departing with one of my testicles for this as well. Maybe we can start a campaign like they did for a second season of Jericho where everybody sent in peanuts, or how people sent penciles to the studios in order to encourage them to end the Writer's Strike by giving them what they wanted.

Perhaps, if enough of us send in disembodied testicles to our pal George, he'll hand the rights over to Del Torro under the condition he offers a minor role to Bruce Campbell, and get his people to work on remastering the OOT for a Blu-ray release. I think this could work. For the first time in years I see a glimer of hope for seeing a true release of the OOT!

Okay, maybe there will be 25 or 30 fans of the OOT in 40 years.

WTF is with this talk about castration?
