What are peoples thoughts, about the prequels and the idea that they are cinema verite, out of the french new wave auteur theory.
Cinema Verite is often a "tone poem" or theme piece with images and sound to convey an idea or emotion through the juxtuposition of images rather than following a script or a story.
One of Lucas favorite films at USC was 2187. From the National Film Board of Canada made by Lipsett.
He loved off the wall movies like Dr Strangelove, and HELP!. Goddard and Truffeut were the french filmakers who inspired him.
Anybody who sees THX 1138 should also watch Goddard's Alphaville to see where Lucas got his ideas.
Other great directors who were an unfluence on lucas were not nececcarily out of the new wave culture. Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, John Ford, Alfred Hithcock, Orson Welles, Sergei Eisenstein, Fritz Lang. Filmakers form all over the world. Lucas claimed he lived, ate and sleeped film. Film was his life at USC.
Star Wars in 1977 was original and genius because it distilled down the history of movies in various genres and borrowed from Worldwide mythic themes and archetypes. The Samurai film, the western, the pirate movie, the swashbuckler, the monster movie.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
