"That cave..."

The mystery of the cave in esb remains a mystery unless you're into EU. The PT didn't do its job and reveal all the juicy backstory of the OT in all its 6+ hours of cgi demos and toy commercials. So does anyone have any theories about the dark-side cave in ESB? I have a little one...

I just heard the word "death" from Luke after watching OCP's classic edition of ESB at full volume (it's one low whisper) and it made me do a double-take. I had to rewind...oops I mean, reverse the video stream or re-read the sector, or whatever it is nowadays. Before, I thought he said the part about feeling cold and nothing more. This leads me to wonder: Is the dark side of the force created by death?

That'd be pretty cool.

I always thought that something pretty important happened on Dagobah in that cave and that was why it was strong with the dark side.

I read some books, but never came across any explanation there.

I think this was one of the more important things we got shafted on in the prequels. Stupid Lucas!!!

I believe one of the Timothy Zahn novels sheds light on the Dagohbah cave. Yoda using a place heavy in darkside vibes to conceal himself from the Empire makes more sense than simply choosing a planet off the beaten path. I guess as far as official explanations go, we're always going to wonder what that place was before it was overgrown. You can clearly see a wall in one shot, so it's not a natural cave,

did'nt yoda kill a sith lord or dark jedi there that tracked him to dagobah? obviously not vader.

Probalbly not canon but there was something like that In star wars tales.

This is long before lucas devised the Rule of 2 scenario.

In the NJO series they had a round about way of explaining it. in the enemy lines duology, luke fights this super dark jedi that was a clone of palpatines son or something, weird like that, anyway at the time corocant is in ruins and this guys who is very dumb is running around the place, at the end he fidn the ruins of the old jedi temple and you learn that the temple is sitting on something that has HUGE amounts of dark jedi energy, its doesnt explain what exactly it was but my impression was that it was like a pandoras box of dark energy, in the book decribed it as a fountian of dark energy they explained that the dark cave on dagobah was similar and the reason yoda was there was one to watch over it, and to his super like force and the caves super dark force would cancel out. so i am guessing that a super dark jedi or something died there long before the starwars event and stuff.

Yeah, in Heir to the Empire, it explains that a dark Jedi had occupied that cave at one point, and Yoda was able to conceal his existance through it.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

From the EU section on Yoda in the Star Wars Databank:

"Another tale of Yoda's past involves stopping a swath of destruction cut by Dark Jedi from Bpfassh. One of these dark siders had gotten as far as Dagobah, were Yoda bested him in direct confrontation. The Bpfasshi Jedi died, his dark Force absorbing into and twisting a nearby tree -- forming a dark side nexus. It is believed that Yoda chose Dagobah as his hiding place due to the dark side energies emanating from the tree. From a distance, Force-users like the Emperor would not detect Yoda since the master's bright light side presence would be canceled by the Bpfasshi dark side presence."
