I did the SW test with my 7 year old nephew, there is hope!

I was watching my 7 year old nephew yesterday, and he is a big SW fan. So I put all 6 movies on the floor and told him I wanted to ask a couple of questions on why he loves SW. First, he sees them as six episodes, as he doesn't know the names of the movies by heart, just Episode I, Episode II, etc.

I first asked him what are your favorites?

-He pointed, "I like Episode 4 & 5."

What which ones are your least favorite?

-He pointed, "Episode 1 & 2"

How come you don't like Episode 1 & 2?

-Episode 3 tells you everything you need to know about Anakin turning to Darth Vader, Episode 1 & 2 are just alright I guess.

Do you like anything about Episode 1?

-He kinda nodded, I like Darth Maul, but he dies at the end.

What do you like better Episode 3 or 6?

-I like Episode 3 better

Why do like Episode 4 & 5 the best?

-Because they are the coolest movies out of all 6, I like Episode 5 the most.

Why do you like Episode 5 the most?

-He just looked at me and said, "I am your father!" That is the best part of all the movies.

That was our exact conversation. Being 7 years old, he has grown up with the prequels on DVD, and like I said, he sees them as 6 episodes, which annoys me, but there is nothing I can do about that, but the fact that my nephew feels The Original Star Wars & The Empire Strikes Back are the two best SW movies, made me feel pretty damn good.

Now this is just one youngling of many SW fans, but there still is hope that as times passes even the younglings will realize which are the best SW movies.

That is just heart warming. There really is still hope. I love it. I think that you have just made my day.

Somewhere in Skywalker Ranch, GL is reading this on a dark room, eating doritos...

"NoooOOOOOOooOO!!!", he screams, as he finishes reading.

He eventually sleeps in a corner of his room, crying and holding a puppet made of a sock.

"Well YOU loved my movie, didn't you mr Sockie? Why yes you did, and I love you very very much...Oh yes I do..."

Yes, i had something like this happen too. i have a five-year-old cousin who's favorite is ESB. His favorite song is also "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath, so he obviously has good taste.

As I told a classmate of mine 2 weeks ago, "the PT may be all hyped up and talked about, but that is only because it is new and popular. In 15 years, let's see how it holds up against the Original Trilogy. I know it is going to fall flat."

His response was a snied, "So certain are you?" The guy is a Star Wars fanatic, but he just happens to like EVERYTHING star wars. He has very little taste in movies. And having him in Theory 348 was painful. He wouldn't shut up. It was like he was fighting with the teacher so he could talk. Hey, buddy I came to this class to learn, not to hear you blather on about stuff that isn't realevant to the subject.

Sorry, got a little side-tracked there.

I look at it this way, and this is where the PT will not pass the test of time. There will always be some fans who love the PT, and SW, and the EU, and everything about it. But overall, all the fans of the PT now, will they LOVE it 20 years from now like we do? We love the OT, it is near and dear to our heart, and it is the story and the characters, cause it sure isn't the effects, because we want the supposed old & outdated editions!

The OT is timeless, hence we are all here 22 years after the last OT movie came out, and still pretty much have the same views on the saga as we did then. The PT, is new, and that newness will wear off, and the effects will be eclipsed by something in the next decade which will blow the PT movies away, and then make them outdated. Does Lucas then update those 3 movies now to keep up?

Alot of fans love the visuals of the PT, and I agree that they are great to look at in certain scenes, but that won't keep their love many years down the road. Alot of them talk how much they like the PT, but understand its faults, the bad love story, etc. You watch these movies for twenty years and the faults will really start to bother you. The OT, with Jedi having some faults, is almost perfect to me. Star Wars & ESB are just perfect films, and quality always passes the test of time.

There is hope for the younger generation!!!

It will become like the Coke vs Pepsi war?
PT vs. OT?

Or...."Can you pass the Star Wars test?"
Extra points to whoever gets that 60s hippie reference.....

I do not fall neatly into that category. I love the PT and the OT and the EU. Why? Because it ALL works very well for me as a (mostly) cohesive story. In fact, the only reason I refer to them as separate is to distinguish them. To me they are all one enjoyable story. Each part of the star wars story has its own story, design, and continuity flaws, but I enjoy each part equally.

But in my opinion, none of the films will be as well known in 20 years as they were or are now. They will simply be looked at as the greats of the past from a different generation. In 20 years, people won't really look at the films as separate trilogies, they'll look at it as the star wars story.

I do not believe any of the films are perfect. They all have flaws.

I don't think I'd let a kid under about 9 or 10 watch RotS, and was just a little bit disturbed when I walked into Sam's Club yesterday afternoon and was greeted by Anakin in flames on the 50-inch HDTV just across from the front door. That said, I did go with my mom and sister (younger than me by exactly 3 years, 6 months, and 12 hours) to see "The Amityville Horror" in its original theatrical run in 1979. Sis turned 30 last month, you do the math. It seemed like most of the kids in my class at the time (either first or second grade, can't remember which) had seen it, too. Maybe kids in the 70s were tougher, I dunno.

i dont think id let my kid see rots only because its a bad film

this is nice to hear. ive also seen some kids around 9-12 who were enthralled with both trilogies but are becoming much more partial to the OOT because of its lasting quality, they're just tired of the news ones, cuase there's nothing there really.

and yes

Empire is perfect. period.

You have to let people make up their own minds without conditioning.

I would. There's nothing so disturbing or graphic there. The one scene that granted a PG-13, the imolation scene, is farsical and comic, almost like a cartoon. Wouldn't you let your child watch Raider of the Lost Ark? Did you know there is lots of sexual innuendo, violence, and freaking nazis skulls MELTING on that film?

my bro is 7, and he, me and my dad went to see ROTS in theaters, that being said I was 12, and am now 13. That also being said, ROTS and ROTJ are my brothers favorite films. My dad said ROTS semmed pretty up-beat and not dark at all- but that being said, hes a horror flick guy.

What strikes me as strange is that my mom, who is 36 years old and is from the 70's generation, considered star wars to be uninteresting until ROTS came out. Then she wanted to watch all of the films, and I gladly had a six-film chronological marathon for her.
