I THINK I KNOW WHY SO MANY SW FANS DISLIKED THE PT. IT IS ALL PHYCOLOGICAL.

OT fans dont like the PT cus it is to open, to wide to impersonal. one of the greatest strengths and hooks of the OT was that is was so personal, you had luke han and leia, and you really really got to know them well. they were the heros, and at all key points in the movie all three were directly linvolved inwhat was going on. in the PT it is not longer personal, the only character that we really follow closely is Obi-wan. In the PT events are alover the place, in TPM you have stuff going on on naboo and curosant and tatoone at the same time, key events. in AOTCs you have Obiwan going off on one mission doing one thing, and you have anakin go off on another, they are not together until the end, and i know that there are alot of SW fans that thought that near the end AOFC became very very good. so that is it right there, that is what is different, and its that diference that is aliening the minds of so many fans, they are used to seeing a starwars film that is personal, and they are not getting it, ‘so the PT doesnt fell like a starwars movies’ <- how many times have you heard that b4 lol.

well there it is, that is the reason, and there is nothing wrong with it. So can the PT fans and the OT fan finally just agree to disagree.

am i wishing for too much there lol

I think your theory is right-on, Shimraa. And it's not that I despise the prequels or constantly go off on them. I find myself frustrated, though, by the third-generation (I'll call them that for convenience's sake) fans who became fascinated with the saga when the prequels were released. If you go on other Star Wars sites and visit the forums, you'll find that many of them like nothing more than to chew out any fans that aren't completely satisfied with George Lucas's current vision. I'm middle of the road in my Star Wars interest: I have few problems with the SEs, though I prefer the original cuts, and I love the Original Trilogy over the prequels, though I definitely don't have a problem popping in my Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones DVD when I feel like it. Heck, I even like Jar-Jar. At the moment, however, I find that the most argumentative and vicious fans are the ones that are pro-Lucas all the way, and have gotten really into the prequels. There's a thread on TF.N right now about Zahn haters, and there are a few that have posted that feel that Zahn is totally overrated and that the newer stuff in the EU is better. They initiate angry discussions about whether the stormtroopers are clones or not. I actually posted a pissed-off entry in my blog this morning describing my frustration with the Star Wars fan community, ironically, though I made sure I listed OT.Com as an exception, because it is.
Basically, I want to agree to disagree and leave it at that. However, many fans are simply perpetuating the disagreement and widening the rift between the fan base. It's sad.

The prequels are icing on the Star Wars cake for me.

Don't get me wrong though, I like icing.

I'm not a prequel basher. I think the prequels are great. The only Star Wars thing that I truly *HATE* is the Special Editions.

I like the holiday special more than the SE.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Agreeing to disagree truly is the way to go. I have nothing against the PT and I've said it many times. I wasn't a huge fan of TPM, but I liked AOTC. That's just me. I've also explained that the reason why I can tolerate the PT better than most is that I try to think of them as movies that are only related to the OT in that they share the name "Star Wars". Otherwise, in my mind, they are a completely separate series of movies. Makes it easier to swallow. I gave up on George completely fulfilling my vision for Star Wars years ago. I don't hold these movies against him, but how can I possibly expect him to incorporate my vision along with millions of other fans' visions in with his? Impossible. They're his movies and he can do with them as he pleases. I will still watch them.

And I've said this, the OT are his movies as well. He can do with them as he pleases. However, since he has released them in theaters in so many different versions, each and every one of those versions should be released for the fans on DVD. Hence why I keep fighting the good fight on this site.

Do you think you would hate the Special Editions as much if the Greedo scene just wasn't in it at all? Everything Jabba says in the new scene was pretty much what went on with the whole Greedo thing. Let's say that they just left out the Han/Greedo scene, just left that out altogether in the Special Editions, do you think you would still hate the SE as much as you do?

I personally think I would hate it a little less but still not like it as much as the original.

Anyway it's just a thought.

For me to forgive the SEs, LFL would have to restore the Greedo/Han scene to its original glory and remove the Jabba scene. There are many other changes that have annoyed me, but those two fixes would make me forgive them. And they truly aren't that big a deal to make nor that important to the overall story that they couldn't be fixed (eliminated in the case of the Jabba scene) without screwing up Lucas' "vision".

for me to appreciate the SE's... all Lucas would have to do is release the OT....
hell i already said i would buy both if he did that...
i love having a set to compare the OT too....

but without the OT... Lucas gets none of my support...

I can't even say precisely what it is that makes the prequels so bad in my eyes. I think it's a mixture of things. The main one being that the Star Wars prequels don't feel like Star Wars at all. Only one of the main characters is present, Obi Wan, and his appearances are not that special. I don't mention Darth Vader because the prequels are about Anakin (at least as far as AOTC goes, don't know about ep3). The tone is different too. The prequels take themselves much too seriously. What makes the OT ss good is that it's more in a trashy soap opera style. And that's what GL intended to do in first place so I really don't understand why he changed his mind for the prequels. The style is also completely different. The OT has all those tacky puppets and monsters and those cool laser effects while the prequels are littered with unneceassry CGI gizmos and preposterous costumes and hairdos.
Still I've seen them both (albeit only twice) and I'll go a, watch Ep3 when it's released (especially coz I'd like to see how they are going to match it to Ep4).
In short, for me the OT rule but to each his/her own...

I stayed in denial and in fact never went back to see it in the theater again. I saw it on DVD and saw the ATOC several times ( a vast improvement), but I stayed in denial. This was movies that were decent, but in my mind I had to divorce them from the ones I love so I didn't get sick inside. Because if they were Star Wars, my expectations were too high, my love too great. I'd forgive any, but Luca$. 16 years to prepare, 16 years to get it right, 16 years to work a real script with a monsterous fan base willing to contribute. And we got "jar-jar cartoons". I've put it all out of my mind over the last few years. The more I heard about Luca$ releasing one movie at a time of the original when he released all his others I thought. Screw this guy, how much money do you need (although now there is a box set coming out of the SE's). It's sickening. Then I heard about edits. The movies being edited, to how they should've been. I did some searches and came upon this site (Yes I love the OT as well another thing Luca$ messed up dearly). I got giddy again. People that love the original. People like Rikter and Magnoliafan that love the mythos so much that they collect, remaster, edit and improve. Giving the fans what they wanted all along (isn't that the point and further, why couldn't he realize this - now it's bigger than him and $$$). Just thought I'd share a love hate story and what brought me here. I love the posts. I love the forward-minded thinking. I love the dreaming of what if here. And I love that no one here blindly praises all that is Luca$. Star wars is mine and yours, not his, he just created it. That's my story. And I'll still get chills from that score and that scrawl no matter what.

now, do you believe that any one who is a kid right now, while the PT is coming out, is going feel and write as passionately about the PT in twenty years? I doubt it. I wish I could separate them from the OT like Bossk does, but I can't. All I keep thinking about is what could and should have been. If you like the PT, then enjoy. But I don't and can't. Sorry, that's how it is.

Thanks you are proving my point. that is what iw as talking about the PT did not seem like a SWs movie cus it was too different. The PT was too different from the OT you said it your self, cus it was more soap opra like, and character captivated you, and you were intranced. but the fact is that in the world today no kid would ever feel the way you did about SW with any movie, it is a point of changed times. in our world today people do not entrance themselves with movies. it have to some point with Lotr but Lotr was a special case. Lotr in my opinion was the foundation for modern fantasy, it was the first true fantasy novel. but all that is besides the point. another thing is that now matter what lucas did there is truely nothing that would have made you truely happy ( i am not saying this to spite you its just the simple trueth). after 16 years the millions of SWs fans all created there own idea of what happens in teh PT, and they al wanted it to be exactly like the originals, but the trueth is that this cannot be done, you cannot please everyong and it is immpossible to made a movie that will appeal to your fans in the exactly the same ways your originaly films did 16 years ago. times change, and people change. alll of this does not mean that the PT is horrible, its jsut different, which is what it is supposed to be.

lets look at the differences between the PT and the OT fundimentally.

1. the PT takes play 30-20 years b4 the OT.
that is a big time difference.

2. the PT take place in a time of overwhelming peace, whereas the OT is in a time of great opression.
the PT takes play during the golden age of the republic, jsut b4 and while it falls. the OT takes place after the fall of a civilizetion that existed for thousands of years, therefore there is it is going to be inheartently dark, asposed to the PT which should be very bright.

3. the scope of the PT is much much bigger then the OT. the OT was planetary whereas the PT was Galactic. this difference in scope is key.
cus it makes the movie impersonal therefore distroying what made the OT so great.

the fact is that the PT is different, and this doesnt mean that the PT sucks all it means is that the PT and the OT are differenet which is what they were fundimentaly suppose to be.

I don't agree. I think 20 years from now, people who are kids now will feel passionately about Harry Potter maybe not as passionately we are about the OT, but certainly more passionately then they will feel in regards to the PT(with the exception of Jimbo or course). I believe that people can still get entranced watching movies.

true. But the PT didn't have to take place in peace. It could have started up in the middle of the Clone wars.

wrong, they both have the Star Wars name and they are both from the same universe and are both part the same movie series therefor they should have a simular look and feel.
But the fact that they don't have the same feel is not why the PT stinks (in my opinion). It stinks because of a bad storyline, bad acting, flat characters, too much CGI, too many plot holes, and Jar Jar Stinks.

Here is another point. Lets say you're right and reason we old time Stars Wars fans don't like the PT is that it is different. If that is true shouldn't Lucas have realized this when he was deciding how he was going to make the PT. He should have said to himself "if I make the PT this way(the way he made it, that is) it will be different from the OT and OT fans won't like it. So maybe I should make the PT in a style that more closely resembles the OT so the fans will like it more" . So to agree with your point is to agree that Lucas is stupid for making the PT the way he did. A smarter wiser person would make the PT in a way that kept the fans happy. But hey, what can we expect from a man too stupid to release the O OT on DVD?

harry potter is a book, it was the book the entranced ppl not the movies, the movie where just additive.

well there is two answers that question, first as i said b4, the PT takes place in a happier time when things are goood the galaxy is at peace. things are going to look alot better b/c of a lil formula peace = properity = lots of ppl having money and wanting to look good = cooler looking ships. and another thing besides the naboo fighters what in the PT looks more advanced they the OT. you dont see ships the size of Death stars or Star Destroyers. the big clone ships are troop transports not battle ships. in the PT you see mini walkers that look less advanced then the walkers in ESB. to tell you the trueth the only ships in the PT that look better then ships in the OT are the naboo Royal Fighter which have higly polished hulls so they look like mirrors. you know the look more advanced because there not F**kin models which are bloody impossible to make look advanced.

Quote

true. But the PT didn't have to take place in peace. It could have started up in the middle of the Clone wars.

IT COULDN'T HAVE STARTED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CLONE WARS, B/C there would be no basis for what was going on, we would know half the story, we would have known anything about naboo, which was important in some of the political scenes in AOTC, we would know where anakin was or how 'good' he really was in the begining( which defeats the purpose of the PT) we wouldnt know about anything that happned in AOTCs cus that movie ended with the begining of the clone wars. inother words your writing off 2 thirds the PT which in my opinion you dont have the RIGHT to do. you can write off parts but not the whole bloody thing.

Quote

the scope of the OT wasn't Galactic? lets see.......a story about a group of rebel freedom fighters trying to overthrow an evil Galactic empire and free the whole Galaxy is not of Galactic scope? hmmmm, then what is?

did you get nothing about what i said. here ill make is ezier for you. it is not galactic in the sence that you dont have two KEY events that happen at the same time that are in different parts of the galaxy. in the TPM you have events occuring on curosant, naboo, and tatooien at the same time. in AOTC, there is stuff occuring that we see on naboo, curosant, geonosis, and tatoonie. did you see anyhting like that in the OT the most we ever say was luke on dagobah and every one else somewhere else together. if you dont get what i am say there then you'll never get it.

No no i am not wrong, maybe if you would open your mind a lil we can compare it to other series where the movies are continutive, and they take place ofr a 50 year span. well the first series like that tocome to mind are the STAR TREK movies. what was the feel in old movies. they were dusty and grity. in the new movies everything is newer and more sleak. the movies have the same name but they are DEFINATELY DONT HAVE THE SAME FEEL. this all goes back to my I think i figured it out idea, the movies are too different for some OT ffans to accept. that is the reason plain and simple.

what si bad about the story line tell me specifics?
what is bad about the acting asides from the fact that they have corny lines? (something that the OT had aswell but at the time when the OT came out they werent corny) once again specifics.
how are the characters flat, define flat for me so i know what you mean, specific examples?
what is wrong with CGI it is a tool used by all movies today? i could use the same excuse and say that the OT sucks cus yoda looks like a puppet he is not real. but i dont cus that is a stupid reason. and is has no basis.
Give me examples of Plot holes? Asides from the medachloirnes one which can be argued either way and has be rehashed too many times, you say there are too many give me more then 4. cus if the PT has more the 5 plot holes then i would define that as too many aswell.
You can say he sucks as much as you waht but the fact is that it is childish and immature to dislike a trilogy because of one character that is playes a supporting role.

NO because she doesnt answer to the fans, its his story, his movie, his stuff, not yours. he didnt make it for the fans he made it too complete his vision, if he were make it for the fan he would have made them back in the 80s rather then wait 20 odd years. and you cant say that he is stupid for doing it that is like say that tolkien is stupid for scorching the shire at the end of lotr. tolkien wanted to socrch the shire it was part of his vision. just like lucas is making the PT the way it is cus its part if his vision..

its not stupid not to release the OT its just cruel. but again its HIS choice. no one else decides but him, and you cant call him stupid cus what he does, doesnt clear your approval, he is alot older the most of you, and he is the creator of Star Wars what it is now it what it was always going to be. it is part of what you have always loved you just didn't know it at the time. if he doesnt want the OT out there on DVD it is because the OT was not his full vision, now he is able to fulfill his full vision so he is not you going to keep reprintingg old stuff. it like if you have a computer program, lets say adobe photoshop. you have adobe photoshop 6 out on the market so why would you re-release adobe photoshop 2. that is probably the way he sees it which is not a stupid way of looking at it, it is just different.

well when i say the PT sucks im going by 1. the story 2. the acting and 3. the look of the movie...

the story and acting were obviously just horrid... and although i enjoy the overall look of the movie... i still feel they depended on CG way too much...
it doesnt have the feel of the original film... there is nothing that even resembles the OT in the film...

and for the old argument their his films he can do what he wants... thats fine... but it doesnt change the fact that they suck... and will never be better than the OT....

in your opinion. and you guys keep proving my point you dont liek the movie because it doesnt feel like a SW movie. when really its just a different type of SW movie, what that your not used to, there are only two examples of bad acting in the PT 1. Anakin in all of TPM, and anakin in the first half of AOTC. and i thing that the guy makes up for it with a very very strong finish, the acting at the end of AOTC was flawless. (last 45 mins).

and what is bad aobut the story. give me examples and please stop being vague. if it is so clearly bad the spell it out for me. if can then i will say that i am wrong and that will be the end of it, but please tell me what is bad about the story.

the fact that its too complicated for people to understand...
go ask any kid roughly in their early teens what the movie was about and they will not mention anything of the whole political storyline because they didnt get it...

its fine that adults understand it but Lucas says he wants to make these movies for a new generation of Star Wars fans...

and as for acting... if you truly believe those were the only bad performances than you really need to watch the movie again..
no offense to Nat but she was so scripted it wasnt even funny....
her performance was emotionless and drab...

you cant really mention many actors who had bad performances though considering half the damn people were CG
