I tried to avoid starting a new thread by mentioning this movie in The Long Bridge Club but nobody made any comments. So, anyone seen this?

IGN gave it a favorable review, and I had really wanted to see it but...

Well, going to movies is a family thing, and my brother (AKA I can't believe he's part of my family!) is too cool to see an animated feature... so we saw something else instead. I don't even remember what it was, now though.

I saw it and liked it. But the one problem I had with it was its cheesy Japanese humor and awkward storytelling devices (lots of expositionist dialogue). It seemed worse in this film than in Spirited Away or Princess Monoke. Anyone else think this?

Apart from that, Billy Crystal was hilarious - my girlfriend and I were reminded of his character in Princess Bride ("He's mostly dead.")

Yeah, Billy Crystal was good - an I agree about the narrative. They say Miyazaki is a genius and I agree, but his narrative needs work. Unless something was lost in the translation?

I seriously hope that's not what the original script said, or otherwise someone needs to revoke Miyazaki's genius liscence, because that line is just BAAAAD.

No, that particular sentence is not said in the film, but that's how I'd define cheesy Japanese humor.

There are moments kinda like that, but not that bad.

Ah. Well the fact of the matter is some humor just doesn't really translate well from Japanese because the langauge structure is so different than western languages.

So is this Howl's Castle movie worth seeing? Animation wise it looked like the Princess Monoke film.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

I enjoyed it. Apart from some dodgy narrative that meant I wasn't really sure what the hell was happening and had to fill in lots of gaps myself, it was one of the better films I have seen recently. I'm quite into my animation though. Can't wait for Wallace and Gromit (it's not out here till friday, which is annoying because it's English. Why does America get it first?)
