DVCam (note NOT MiniDV. DVCam is the pro-version of that and uses the same size tape but at a faster, non-drop out pitch. DVCam will not automatically play back on home camcorders, but some may surprise).

So this explains why my P.o.S. canon miniDV zr70 won't play back the tapes I recorded at a local cable station properly. It's even more worthless than I realized before.

Well I'd love to see an LD->DVD of this, I do have the rather bad quality VHS->DVD that I got off ebay or something at some point a long time ago, but I'd love better quality.
Here's hoping it gets done.

A few weeks ago, the movie was shown in widescreen in german television. If I remember correctly, someone at cinefacts.de recorded it on DVDr. Should be no problem putting the original audio track over the video.

Oh HELL yes!

Okay, I've contacted two persons who have a recording of this. Hopefully, one of them will donate a copy of this.

Also, there were some screenshots in the thread. Top are the screenshots from VOX (16:9), below an old foolscreen shot:

Please mind, that the video will be PAL, have a TV station logo and german audio only!

EDIT
Forgot to mention that this recording does not have the end credits. German tv stations cut them out

Well, at least we now know Howard wasn't open matte. I'm not 100% sure Howard was shot 1:85, but the theatre I saw it at did mess up on occasion. (They botched Brainstorm big time!) Aren't some HD channels cropping 2:35 movies slightly to fit the 16:9 frame?

Actually, you can't tell this from these screencaps. Optical effects shots are often created in the actual aspect ratio of the film. Back To The Future is 1:85. The fullscreen version opens its mattes, but the optical effect shots are panned & scanned from a 1:85 image.

PAL= more resolution! Huzzah! An NTSC conversion shouldn't be too difficult - all we'd really need is the audio track. That video does looks good I have to say.

As far as the tv station title is concerned, it shouldn't be there in that corner during the whole film, right?! (and if so, I'm SURE Mebejedi wants to go through frame by frame and remove it...eh?! Eh!? I know you do.... )

I'm sizzling with excitement.

I sure hope that the gods of conversions can get this done!

Sure it is during to whole film. You know, we germans are so stupid, we would forget which channel we're on, if there wouldn't be a logo...

American stations keep the logos on all the time as well. When I a kid, they used to fade it in occasionally in the corner of the screen, then fade it back out...but I think they keep the logo on there permanently so there's no way in hell somebody can reproduce the video without showing where it came from.

In the end, though, that watermark isn't all that terrible, is it?

So, anyway, I'm new to this project and Howard the Duck in general. Has this really never been released to DVD? What are the plans for this project? Any info would be great, as there is nothing really set in stone mentioned in this thread. Thanks!

It differs from film to film. Some are cropped on the sides to fill the 16:9, and some are open matte. Howard here gives us both extra height and width, yay!

Is there any update on this project?

The film has been showing on satellite TV over here in the UK, I recorded a copy to my set-top DVD recorder which will tide me over for now, sadly it's 4:3 and also the cut UK version of the film.

Judging by the framing, though, it appears to be 1.85:1 cropped down to 4:3, which means I'm waiting along with the rest of you for a nice OAR version

what was cut?

the title is the alternate one, "Howard: A New Breed Of Hero", and two scenes are cut out: Lea Thompson finding a condom in Howard's wallet and Jeffrey Jones sticking his tongue into a car cigarette lighter.

according to IMDB , anyway

I've been wanting this for ages.

Still stuck with a vhs->dvd copy I scrounged from somewhere(don't even remember where).

Any new info on if/when someone may be working on this?

Years ago (before DVDR became such a commodity and broadband made it tradeable), I downloaded an SVCD copy of Howard from one of the newsgroups. It was sourced from LaserDisc, and though it was P&S, I thought it was damned good. Unfortunately, one of the 2 discs got scratched and I've been trying to replace it but every copy I've seen since has been inferior to that one...

Screenshots earlier in this thread were intriguing - chyron or no, I'd love to see the widescreen version of this "classic"!
