OK peeps I am off it now(seeding Howard),it is all up to you guys to keep it alive now,if its like Monster Squad it will live for a long time LOL,also I hope I dont let you guys down on this one,I am very pleased with it,it is way better than nothing.
also Winman Evil Dead 1 & 2 and Conan have NOT been released.
DJ, thanks for the clarification regarding Evil Dead 1 and 2, as well as Conan. I look forward to DL'ing and helping seed both.
Also, if anyone needs HOWARD via disc, drop me a message, as i'm able to make copies for folks who cant get it via Bit Torrent. Providing you provide the disc and stamps.
i had to shrink the DVD (dont have any dl's) but i burned it today and watched about 15 minutes of the film, and i must say, i cant imagine a retail dvd looking much better than this. the only complaint i could possibly have is that the music playing during the menu seems louder than the movie, so i had to turn it down, then turn it back up once the movie started playing... but all in all, this is one of the nicest fan dvds i have in my collection!
DJ, i burned it DL, since i have some laying around. DOnt use them as much as i thought i would. Oddly, they dont seem to have gone down much in price. Seems like i use them mostly for the great projects made available here.
wow, i watched it last nite, and loved it. Its been years and years since i've seen this film, so i hadnt remembered most of it. Very silly, and funny. Picture and sound quality were superb, awesome job DJ. Most appreciated.
Win
p.s. I'm gonna have to reburn the disc, as i used NERO 7, which i always do, but i dont get the menu on either of my DVD players, just the menu audio. Works fine on my pc's however. Other forum downloads seem to work fine, so i might have done something wrong with the burn.
Hey DJ, will you release the PAL version or don't you think that anyone want it? I am having big hopes for you to say that you will. If not I will go for the NTSC. Thanks anyhow!
And THAT is why guys like DJ rule. Do you know how easy it would be for him to list his HD2DVD stuff on Ebay? How many movies has he released that aren't available, or unavailable in widescreen? He could've made a mini-fortune on Monster Squad alone.
So, the lesson for today kids, is that if someone asks you for a copy, you send them one, otherwise suckers have to resort to Ebay and paying people like OCPTR47...erm...pirates for 'em.
"CFQ" stands for Cinefantastique magazine - for my money, THE genre movie magazine. Kind of a "serious older brother" of Starlog and Fangoria (launched in 1970, it predates them both), but not as "trade" as Cinefex. For a kid who was weaned on Forry Ackerman's "Famous Monsters (of Filmland)", CFQ was a natural progression, and I have the first 25+ years of the magazine complete, in binders...
I should have scanned a cover or something just so the uninitiated would know what they were reading... OOPS!
As a hardcore fan of this film, my initial reaction after viewing this release: WOOOOOOOW
Ok, that reaction actually occured in the first few min but lasted the whole film. This is an absolutely monumental release. The only other home video version of any kind of this film is from the 1987 vhs/laserdisc. Anytime Howard aired on tv it was essentially taken from this lousy vhs print (you can always tell the vhs print by the small black bars seen during the credits). Watching this version of Howard brought up many questions in my mind. First off, its obvious that at some point Universal or Lucasfilm did a complete THX version of the film, which I would say this print is. Its gorgeous.
So who owns the rights to this film? Did it revert back to Lucasfilm? Someone made a decision to restore the film and then keep it in a vault for some laserdisc/dvd release that simply didn't occur. I guess we can all be lucky that Universal had this print and probably without thinking sold it in some hd movie package to the uk cable station it was shown on. And now we have a near perfect version of the film. My suggestion to anyone even slightly interested in getting a copy of this is to jump on the torrent asap. You should be able to get a nice fast download since there is plenty of seeders right now. I have a feeling that if Universal or Lucasfilm sees this print in wide release, they're going to freak.
My only nitpick on this near perfect release is that I wish the actual shooting script was in the dvd rom section and that we had all the trailers. Its not DarkJedi's fault there is only one trailer there (the tv trailer that aired during primetime a day or so before release) since thats literally the only version you can find anywhere on the net. There were about 3-5 different trailers for this film, including the famous Lea Thompson one where she faces the camera and talks about a hot guy for a min then ends with "and I love rubbing my hand through all his feathers" Then the title. Classic trailer, but lost unless someone can make a copy off of a 35mm print, if anyone even has that.
So major thanks to DarkJedi for this release. One of my favs, commercial or fan released, of this year to be sure
Thanks again for doing this. It will be interesting to see if Lucas does anything with this movie. He can't sit on it forever. I don't think he was totally kidding when he told Robin Williams he'd like to animate the duck and have a famous-type voice actor. It probably wouldn't be any less commercial than the THX1138 special edition. Is this on the newsgroups anywhere? That'd be awesome.
Hey, DJ. It was your Howard The Duck release that got my ass back on this forum to check out what else I had been missing since being gone for so long working two jobs. I took a look at the trouble you went through getting this thing released and I just wanted to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I had a little trouble with the DL version that i grabbed from myspleen, but once I shrunk it and burned an SL copy, I was good to go. And the memories flowed from there. I must have sat through this thing at least ten times in the theater and sitting there watching your DVD, I was eleven years old again!
So, thank you again so much for the work you put into these releases. You have come a long way since I made those crappy King Kong covers for you back in the day. Heheh. Good job, buddy. And please, I beg you to keep up the good work. We ALL appreciate it!
HTD has gotten a lot of unfair criticism over the years. It was no gret masterpiece, but looking at it again after o many years, it has quite a lot of charm to it and that 80's feel of a movie that was just made for fun. Also being a native San Franciscan, it's always fun to spot the locations for this film that were supposed to substitute for Cleveland.
Excellent work on bringing a rarity back to us in excellent quality, better quality than the last batch of Lucasfilm releases.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for. "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." http://www.myspace.com/harlock415
The thing about Howard was that it deliberately set out to have a B-Movie feel, but the hype around it and high concept sort of overshadowed the fact that it was supposed to be cheesy fun - that got lost on audiences and critics who ripped it a new one.
Also, they were just laying in wait, as George Lucas was still this golden boy that had at least 5 movies in the top ten all time blockbuster list, and they were whiffing for the first scent of failure so they could pounce.
Very nice rip, DJ. I didn't even really notice any cuts for the removal of th condom scene. Too bad about the credits, but this is great. Can't wait to get ahold of some of yer other stuff.
believe me the credits thing still messes with me to,but there is nothing I can do about it now,I have cleared everything off my PC LOL. but who REALLY watches the credits anyways?
Thanks Dark Jedi, you truly rule. This was one of my favorite movies as a kid and really held up well. It's funny and has tons of charm. I always wonder why some films are considered genius send ups and others mocked as cheese. Either way based on this thread and the number of downloads over at the spleen its obvious there alot of fans out there.
As for the DVD, its stunning. I couldn't believe my eyes. For the record, I burned a dual layer version and it plays perfect. Use imgburn, I used to have some problems burning dual layer discs, but imgburn hasn't messed up yet.
