Branching: Has anyone cracked this nut?

I wanted to do some simple branching on a DVD I was working on.  All of my google searches turned up this answer: You, xhonzi, can't do it.  Or, rather, you can for $100,000.

Um... how hard can it be?  Has someone here figured it out?

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

It's my understanding that most, if not all, "prosumer"-level DVD authoring software cannot do seamless branching.  So, yeah, you pretty much can't do it.

On the other hand, I've heard of some attempts being made at branching, but they usually end up with awkward pauses at the branching points.  Perhaps some other, more enlightened members here can help you out better than I can.
