The ONLY doubleofive

I'm proud of my screenname.  I really am.  I picked it out around 1998 or so and have never failed to get it for any website: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Xbox LIVE, MySpace, Twitter, Wordpress, tons of forums...  If you see the name doubleofive, you can be assured its me.

Except for Facebook.

As of midnight EST this morning, you could pick screennames so that people could search and find you by username and not just your real name.  I was up at 3am and thought I should save my "doubleofive", but figured it would be OK for me to get some sleep, who would take it after almost 12 years of getting it every time?  Apparently I was wrong.  Some kid in Minnesota took it before I could.

It's stupid, but I feel like my identity has been stolen.  I actually submitted a "Violiation of Intellectual Property" to Facebook about it!  Figured being able to prove that every other doubleofive is me would gain me back the one I lost.

I actually changed my title on here last week to reflect how proud I was that if you searched "doubleofive" on Google, every result pointed to me.  Now I'm afraid that the top result will be some kid I've never met before in my life.

I hope Facebook agrees with my sentiments...

Anyone else ever have this problem?  Kind of wanted to start a discussion, not just vent.

I don't think you'll get anything out of them.  "Violation of Intellectual Property" usually means that someone stole or is simulating your identity within an organization you're already a member of.  If you had created "doubleofive" and he came along and created "doubleOHfive", then you might have something because their records would show that you were there first.

Good luck either way, though.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Yeah, I'm figuring I don't have much of a chance, as I calm down.  I mean, Robot Chicken had to be "CyborgTurkey" on Twitter, and I'm sure they actually have a copyright!

It's not like using http://www.facebook.com/drew.stewart (feel free to look me up) will kill me, or I'm afraid this kid will be funnelling away potentional money or clients (for which I have nothing to offer anyway).  It was just kind of nice to be the ONLY one.

Maybe I should go the 80's cartoon route and call myself "The Real doubleofive"! ;-)

Just think of yourself as doubleofiveprime and the the other one as bizarrodoubleofive.

Nice!

Anyways, I am afraid you will now need to change this,

it is no longer accurate, since some kid in a very cold state is now also Doubleofive. You could change it to something like, "The First of Two" or "The Original" But I am afraid as long as you claim to be "The One and Only", even after admitting yourself that it is no longer true, I will have to write you off as a very dishonest person and never believe another word you say... okay, yeah, I am only kidding.

I had something similar, but yet completely different happen. I have never exclusively used one screen name for everything, but I had an email address I really liked, very official and all that was my first name, followed by my middle and last initial. When gmail came out I immediatly signed up for it and have used it as my exclusive email ever since, but to my complete dismay, my first name, and middle and last initial were already taken, and I had to add a number after it. Very annoying. Numbers are lame. So awkward to have numbers in there. Before I would tell people my email address and they'd get it the first time, now it is like giving out my phone number, "Okay, what were those numbers again? Could you repeat that one last time please. Okay, now let me read it back to you to make sure I got it right. The really bad part is I love gmail so much I could never dream of switching to anything else, but I really hate those damn numbers. If I ever get my hands on the gmail user who share my first name and middle and last initials...
