According to a few recent Amazon reviews, the ViewHD splitter mentioned in the OP no longer strips HDCP. :-(

Does anyone have an (old) extra one lying around to sell/trade?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Be sure to review the Speed Demos Archive forum for "How to bypass HDCP for use with Blackmagic Intensity (PS3 owners, read here!)". Best to read backward from the latest page (15). Their reports echo Amazon's on apparent production changes.

Coincidentally, someone there just bought a splitter, for use with his PS3, from an eBay seller and it works ... except on one 3rd-party software:
https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/how_to_bypass_hdcp_for_use_with_blackmagic_intensity_ps3_owners_read_here_352.html

It's cost is low and might be worth a test. (Let us know how you fare.)

That's awesome! Yes, definitely let us know which and from where!

From my above-mentioned forum, some posters mention particular sequences of turning on/off, plugging/un-plugging, required multiple plug-ins (like a card and a monitor), etc., to get their particular boxes to work. Would you also mention if any such gymnastics are required for your purchases?

I have only a few that strip HDCP. The same model has been updated by the company to keep within HDMI requirements. This is a general trend with such devices.

Often times a company will get a batch ( or three or four) of a few thousand of the device that will strip HDCP. After the company or an HDMI partner finds out the company must have its factory fix the flaw.

Some factories are lazy and don't care and will only update the specs when told by their buyers they HAVE TO DO IT.

PM me if you're interested in negotiating a price for the device.

Thanks, kypkalorian, but I was only requesting info for the thread -- especially since time seems to be of the essence with these electronics.

Great info.

If I wanted to rip copy protected HDTV from my InfiniTV PCIe CableCard to store on my NAS for viewing around the house on Plex or XMBC would any of these cards or splitters accomplish that?

Thanks.

The old SewellDirect.Com Splitters from about 8 months ago will:)

The ViewHD 1x2 that was shipped to me from J&R Galaxies on March 11th seems to remove HDCP. It looks like people are having issues with the 1x4 and maybe 1x8 that are available from he same Amazon page (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004F9LVXC/)

I did manage to hook up my PS4 to an old Eizo Flexscan L557 LCD monitor from 2004 just using a hdmi to dvi cable from the splitter and play games and blu-rays. Without the splitter I couldn't even get the PS4 boot logo.

This doesn't guarantee that the ones they got in stock now will work of course...

So I have been following this thread wanting to figure this out myself and see what hardware was needed to get content off of my directv box. I would like to grab a few of the more abstract shows that I watch. Since the current standard scene releases are .mp4 and I am very happy with that quality vs file size I guess that will be my ultimate goal. I ordered the recommended HDMI splitter

For whatever reason I have it in my head that I want an external capture card such as one of these.

Hauppauge HD PVR2

Avermedia Game Capture HD II

Elgato Game Capture HD

Does anyone have feedback or a review of any of these? I am leaning toward the Hauppauge, seems like the most powerful. Am I limiting myself going this route instead of internal? In you opinion will I be able to accomplish what I want to do going this route? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Do you need a separate HDCP stripper to record HDCP content using the Supercast X 6 HDMI card?

Great information esp with regards to capture of video, this is exactly what I have been trying to accomplish for some time and this really helps. My purpose of capturing is archive recorded content off my DVR which up to the December of 2013 was allowed until my cable provider enforced the copy once flag on premium content recordings (HBO, Starz and such channels). Up to that point I could use my "popular" branded DVR to transfer content from the box to my PC for later use.

One thing however with the tradition procedure described the aspect of sound quality and capture hasn't been really mentioned too much. I'm using the Black Magic Intensity Pro option which I'm pleased with, however my HDMI source includes Dolby digital and with for example h.264 encoding has the option to encode more than two channel stereo.

What are the options to do such? The Black Magic setup I have appears to limit the sound decoding to 2 channel PCM stereo.  Being a total newbie in this area, do I need something else to accomplish such? Up to now the Dolby decoding was very limited until the last couple of years due to HDCP restrictions and  the overhead of CPU processing and as a result Asus created created a multimedia device for home media centers. While the below mentioned device respects HDMP, the stripper function side steps that road block.

As I understand the problem with HD digital audio is the decoding and re-encoding on the fly which one piece of new hardware I'm considering is the Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 card which while I don't believe it will function as a video capture device, I'm hpe that it will do the Dolby digital decoding so that I can use it was the audio capture device with the BM Intensity capturing the video source. The asus card has both HDMI input and output with the intended function is to preform the Dolby digital decoding for your home media server.

Any thoughts?  I'm active in several other AV forums and the subject of HDMI capturing is taboo so it's difficult to discuss such a subject so any input would be appreciated. THANKS!

The end result is that I wish to capture HD quality video and preserve the HDMI source audio which contains the Dolby digital 8 channel sound tracks.

I thought i needed it before I bought it but when I set up my X6 yesterday I could plug both my PS4 and PVR directly into the card and get video and audio through.

As for the possibility to save the hdmi audio directly without reencoding it I'm not yet sure that's possible. The recording program seems to rely on a decode->encode pipleline for both audio and video. I only had about 30 minutes to test so I need to look more into that. Maybe I can set some sort of passthrough.

And on a side note; DTS audio did not work after installing the driver and capture program from SkyHD. Looks like it doesn't have a DTS decoding filter included. As it uses directshow filters I should be able to use a third party one if SkyHD doesn't have one on their pages.

Edit:

Even though you can play both audio and video without a HDCP stripper you get a HDCP error when trying to record. At least I got it when trying to record from my PS4. Using the ViewHD 1x2 splitter it worked fine.

Some good news and some bad news:

Recording 1080p60 from a PS4 works like a charm using the ViewHD 1x2 splitter. I used the UT video codec and multichannel pcm for audio (decoded from DTS). Havn't recorded any clips longer than a few minutes though.

TV channels from my HD PVR is another matter. On most channels (both HD and SD) I get sporadic image stuttering quite frequently. On some channels it seems to work without a glitch though. Not sure how they are different right now. The stuttering is there both in the X6 recording app and when recoring in VDub so it's related to the capture driver. Might be related to the HD PVR too but it never stutters when playing on a tv. I live in Europe so we got PAL framerates by the way.

A little advice here, if you would -

I have a Supercast X6 HD, and I cannot get a capture from my PVR that does not have dropped frames, or pixellation if the speed is ok. I cannot get VirtualDub, x64 or not, to recognize the driver for the X6 so I cannot use VirtualDub and so I have had to use the SkyHD software.

I am just trying to get it to work ok here, 2 ch. sound is fine if I can get the video right. Any advice on what settings for the X6? I am a novice in this area, I don't know what settings need to be for decode, encode, record etc. I have not been able to use the UT codec that has been talked about as I get a "Stream" error and it says it cannot talk to it.

Just hope to get steered in the right direction....

Thanks!

Hello, I just bought the Supercast X6 to have a nearer look at it´s capabilities.

Okay, I would be happy to know how you got Vdub to recognize the X6 driver -  I have had zero success with that and I would really like to be able to use Vdub to test out capture settings.

Thanks for any advice you can give me on this.

Hello, just received the card (Supercast x6) from Japan.

Unfortunately I can´t get it to work properly, with the Supercast X6 recording application the picture stutters every 10 seconds if I put in a 1080i PAL PVR signal via HDMI.

I will wait for another driver before continue testing. A user already said the same in this thread here before.

If somebody knows a beta driver that fix this problem please post it here because my japanese language knowledge is zero.

To be specific:  Did you have to do anything special to get the card to show up in VDub? I cannot get VDub to see it with either the older driver, or the new one. Which one are you using? I just want to be able to try capture with VDub and the X6 Supercast HD to see if I have the same frame issues myself.

Hello, I´ve sent the Supercast X6 back because of stuttering issues during watching & recording.

I´ve already read that the CaptureX HDMI 1080P have the same stuttering issues so I won´t buy it. http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/334145-HDCP-strippers/page17

My config: I have a STB with hmdi and spdif out. I also got a hdfury 4k splitter. I want to watch / capture 1080i50 PAL via HMDI with 5.1 over SPDIF.

Is in fact the Hauppauge Colossus the "only" solution because I can use SPDIF input which ignores the SCMS copy protection of the STB? In my opinion 20MBit/s x264 recording is good, but the card is quite old...

Or can I also use the Hauppauge HD PVR2 GE Plus with SPDIF in? Does it ignores SCMS or not? If it does, is 14Mbit/s not enough for h264 recording?

I also don´t see any advantage if i will buy a Decklink Studio 4K or Decklink 4K Extreme. I´m not an expert but in my opinion both can´t record AC3 if I look at the specifications, or am I wrong?

That poster talked about jagged edges and some dropped frames with CaptureX, but I don't see a mention of stuttering.

In my Note at the top of the OP, I was referring to "cards" in the literal sense. You can use the regular Hauppauge HD PVR 2 as well as the GE Plus. Only the regular Gaming Edition dropped support for 5.1.

The 14Mbps recordings do show noticeable artifacts though. (As do 20Mbps Colossus captures -- there is a reason the AVerMedia hardware encoder device supports up to 60Mbps.)

All of Blackmagic's products are designed to be used in production, so they have no need for supporting compressed audio capture. Unless your STB can decompress the audio to 5.1 PCM over HDMI, their products won't help you.

So I finally decided to buy the Hauppauge Colossus. For my liking that´s enough. It will arive next week. I also bought in advance CaptureX, it´s capable of recording 24MBit/s H264. I´m excited how the records will be... :)

I received a PM asking me about capture cards which I will answer publicly.

I have been researching and have considered the following:

Avermedia ExtremeCap U3 External (1080p 60 fps got my attention)

Avermedia Livegamer HD or HD Lite Internal cards

Blackmagic Intensity Pro Internal Card

Blackmagic Intensity Extreme (claims to connect to Windows PC via Thunderbolt)

Elgato Game capture HD

Do you have a preference on any particular one?

The ExtremeCap U3 has a ridiculous bug where 1080p59.94 is captured as 1080p60.00 with duplicate frames added. I guess it's a bug across all of AVerMedia's hardware, as the C127 card I have is supposed to capture "1080p60 as 1080p30" but instead of just dropping half the frames from 1080p59.94 it creates a 1080p30.00 video. The problem may be unnoticeable to most in direct viewing, but for example if you have a PS3 playing back 23.976 -> 59.940 -> 30.000 it's impossible to recover the original 23.976 frame rate. (I mention this because my own reason for buying the card was recording Vudu. I can just record 1080p23.976 Vudu direct from my WD TV, but I can't download my purchases to hard drive prior to capturing like I can on PS3. So I have to rely on my internet connection to keep up with streaming.)

Live Gamer HD [Lite] and Elgato Game Capture HD are hardware encoders, which don't interest me. You may have different goals.

Intensity Pro is well-reviewed. Intensity Extreme looks okay but I don't see any advantage for the much higher price. It's marketed to people who can't install a PCIe card, for whatever reason.

The intensity extreme is great if you are running a laptop as your capture system, it costs more as it is an external unit.

The Intensity Pro is great if you have a PC with a good power supply and quality motherboard. It can pick up noise if you have a shitty supply or a noisy bus, the extreme bypasses those problems.

The first post is the best piece of info on HDMI capture I can find on the net. Well done!

The OP recommended Timeleak cards but 4/5 are now crossed out as unsuitable. The fifth is no longer readily available.

The Mine HD887 is recommended but I cannot find. I can find an Oupree HD887 here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151408748211 - is that the same? £55 cost

OP also mentions Blackmagic Decklink Mini Recorder but that is £100+ Cost of an HDCP stripper £20 = £115

Assuming the HD887 from Oupree is the Mine HD887 then is there any reason to NOT buy that and to buy the Black Magic?

Intend to capture some content from STB, lossless, plus some game footage from PS3/360 but don't want HDCP getting in the way!
