How many signatures?

Jay,

How many signatures are you planning to get or until what date are you leaving the petition open until you send this on to Lucasfilm? Or is that not how this works?

I'm curious what happens with the petition once it's "ready".

I don't have any plans to "submit" the petition to George Lucas at this point. I have no idea how many signatures we can expect to gather. I've received word that Lucasfilm is aware of the petition and they're keeping an eye on it. I also did a phone interview the other day with an industry publication. I hope we'll see more print publications mention the site within their pages.

The petition will stay online and gather signatures until 2006 if it has to.

Just out of curiousity, how is that so many people have already found the petition? I mena I know that the tf.n editorial gave it a huge boost, but is this something people are looking for on the net and finding, or it well advertised on other sites?

Actually, the biggest bump came from The Digital Bits, who posted multiple times over several days about the petition. Bill Hunt is the one who initially contacted me about it when it was nothing but a page with Han's face on it and a "coming soon" tagline. That was the impetus for me to finish it. The Digital Bits definitely pushed most of the traffic here in the first few days.

Many sites are now linking to us directly, so that's driving continual traffic our way. We're working on getting support from other large sites and hope to have them pushing traffic in our direction soon.

cool, I was wondering why the traffic was so steady, it seemed odd to me that at least a hundred people a day accidentally find this and support it.

Have you talked to AICN or www.comingsoon.net

yeah I've emailed everyoen I know about it, it doesn't help exponentially, but if even half of them forward it to other people, and if even half of those people forward it, etc, hopefully it helps at least a bit.

I think one thing that could help sell the idea to LFL is that the OE OT could be released without a lot of extra features, because the people who are really out to get it want it specifically for the movie, thus LFL could release the dvd with relative easy and at a low cost, which will help tide people over (in their eyes at least) until the big SE OT with tons of extras comes out and all the new added scenes and FX.

AotC benefitted from TPM's dvd coming out shortly before the marketing began for it. But the AotC disk came out so fast after its theatre run that there will be no similar venue to help hype up ep3.

But this would be the perfect vehicle for that, they could tie in the promotion of the last SW movie ever with the historical release of the the original trilogy in its original form.

Roger Ebert is also someone who should be contacted at some point, and has any effort been made to reach the film historian/preservationist who was quoted in that Entertainment weekly article a few weeks back about the OT dvds???

Jay, have you ever received e-mails from any reps at Lucasfilm? If so, what have they said?

Jay,

I'm afraid to try to take the time to scroll through all the petition signatures myself as there are only so many hours in a day. But, do you happen to know offhand if any celebrities or anyone affiliated with the original SW trilogy has signed the petition? That would be pretty damned cool to have the support of someone who was involved in it.

Somebody signed up with a Lucasfilm e-mail address, but the confirmation e-mail bounced back so I think it was just a goof.

Other than searching for profanity and obvious fake signatures, I don't review the names submitted.

so we've now passed 25,000.

Any upcoming plans with the petition? New venues to get it more spotlight? At what stage do you see the media becoming involved?

So we've crossed the 30,000 mark, any plans for wider exposure now?

Yes, exposure is the key. I found this petion through the force.net, but the more sites and publications we can hit, the better. And I am telling you, if we could somehow get this on an AOL front page, that would be a major boost. They have millions of members, and potential signatures.
