I know we have a generally good reputation elsewhere, the projects by yourself and Harmy (not forgetting Jambe Davdar's Star Wars Begins) have earned that.

I was thinking back to a post Anchorhead made when referring to frevious's likening of GL's activities to Nazi war crimes. I'm wondering how much newcomers views are affected by posts from two or three of our resident nutjobs.

And don't forget about ALL the dumbass "rape" talk too, and the people that talk about wanting GL's death so they can hope that they get their movies, there is a lot of stupid talk lately, and it is pretty pathetic, in my opinion.

Like I have said several times, this place is NOT like it used to be a few short years ago, it has changed quite a bit, and not all for the good, miss the "good old" days of OT.

1 more thing, hopefully once the Set has been out for a while most of this crazy shit will pass, and maybe some of the "nut jobs" will too, we can only hope.

And my response now is the same as it was then: "no, it's our loss." And the negative attitudes are coming out of more than just "two or three nutjobs." It's pervasive here, and yes, a few are a lot more insane about it than others, but denying that pervasiveness isn't going to make it any less true.

Should people here stop "bitching and moaning" about the prequels, the constant tinkering by Lucas, etc.? I don't think so, no. Many of the complaints are indeed legitimate, and as has been said, it's only opinion (the rantings from the "nutjobs" aside). But you've also got to accept that the "bitching and moaning" is going to come at a cost, and that cost is that this forum will be seen by many people as "a gathering place for rabid Lucas bashing." Whether anyone thinks that's fair or not, it's nonetheless the unfortunate reality that can't be denied.

There are 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary, and those who do not.

I follow about 5 forums regularly, and every one of them has nutjobs.  OT.com became a lot more popular recently, for obvious reasons, so it is natural that we'd pick up a few more.  The unfortunate thing is that detractors simply say "look at what they're saying at thisforum.com" and then use the nutjob as the example, lumping everyone into that one basket.  There's no solution to that.

Yeah, I'm out of it for a little while and everyone gets delusions of grandeur...I've been slowly getting my feet wet at this place since retiring a few years back (I got really burned out) and it's shocking to read some of this stuff here - and no wonder there can be some negative opinions from the mainstream.  It's shameful, really.

No doubt that some people hear only what they want to hear, so there will always be a large contingent of Lucas Gushers who see us as mean, wrong, threatening, etc.

Because they continue to get what they want (regularly updated Original Visions), they're operating from a position of power. They have no reason to question Lucas, educate themselves on the actual history of the franchise, or look at the published evidence that he's a liar.  It would also fly in the face of what they want to believe.

We can't stop that behavior, nor can we change their opinion.  However, we can change ours (not that it needs much changing). We could tone down the Lucas hate a touch and prove them wrong to the new members or visitors.

We're not as bad as they see us - not even close - but all it takes are a few buffoons and it will appear to a casual visitor as though they were right about us.  We most likely won't get this time in the spotlight again.

Some of this impression of omnipresence is compounded by what I assume to be identity 'borrowing' (and socks).

I've noticed quite a few accounts on Star Wars boards going by the name of bingowings which are (honest to Gods) not me.

But what are the chances of it?

As a phrase it's as un-starwarsy as you can get and yet these other 'me's exist and are commenting on RedLetterMedia's reviews etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of the more rabid Lucas 'haters' here were also 'gushers' elsewhere, it is the nature of the beast.

Most criticism seems to be by those who do not have an appreciation for the historical preservation of an important work of art. I'll side with those passionate about preserving the original theatrical editions of Star Wars, including the "nut jobs", over the indifference of a bunch of consumer whores any day.

Then again, I'm different than a lot of people on these forums because a proper standard definition transfer would more than satisfy me. I don't need high definition. What is frustrating is that the colours and feel of the films is actually superior on some of the old VHS tapes.

As to our cause; it is essentially dead because the problem is not that of having simply to educate people. The problem is that most people don't care to be educated.

Perhaps this community has swung a little further towards HATE on the "Haters"/"Gushers" pendulum, but not IMHO much further than many other comparable sites.

Given that the basic building block of this site is OOT Preservation, which is sadly antithetical to Lucas and Co's main stance, a little venom is perhaps to be expected.

And sadly, the occasional "Raped my childhood" or "Lucas should die" nonsense is always louder and more noticable than reasoned discourse.

This isn't the real world?  Wait...so maybe the Star Wars issue isn't as serious as things like rape, disease, and genocide?

Speaking as someone who is a noob to the board; My experience thus far is the boards are friendly and helpful, there are some rather extreme opinions around. But I think it unfair if individual opinions of the extreme variety should reflect on a forum as a whole.

As such apart from thinking people who liken George Lucas to a Nazi as an idiot, I don't think that is at all representative of the forum. Or to put it in the extreme analogy some of the Lucas haters would put it, does a serial killer reflect upon their society as a whole? I'd say the answer has to be no.

Lucas has of course lost the plot (which isn't new to him, seeing as he seemed to of completely of mislaid the entire prequel plots), and individuals failures to recognize that says as much about them, as those who seemingly want to kill another human being over a film franchise.

For me I have generally found the threads I've looked at interesting and informative, with a number of interesting viewpoints represented. The fact Adywan and Harmy are both regular posters here speaks volumes as to the regard the forum should be held in. I for one am very grateful that there are some very passionate fans here, who have done some wonderful works for the community, and I think the forum has been a massive force in that.

I can only speak for my self here, but although I'm part of the Star Wars community (I'm a moderator over at Lucas Forums). I am affraid I would have to confess until earlier this week I kind of knew of your existence but had never checked the forums out. As such generally I don't think you can have too much of a notorious reputation, as "infamous" boards tend to be more quickly known than good ones.

Just my 2 cents...

General Star Wars Discussion is most of the problem. The topic-specific forums (Theatrical vs SE, Preservations, FanEdits) are mostly fine other than some bickering.

Of course, I mostly just go to Theatrical vs SE to see the Comparions thread
