How did Obi-Wan get so much money?

In the cantina, Obi-wan offers Han 17,000 credits to fly him to Alderaan. Han seems impressed by this amount of money, and Luke also is taken aback by Obi-wans flashing of the galactic cheddar. What I want to know is, where did Obi-wan get that kind of money just being a hermit/crazy old man? Was he running an illegal spice trade? Robbing Jawas? One would have to assume that a man of his age is living on a fixed income, and wouldn't normally be able to be so free with his wallet. Perhaps he received a sizeable retirement plan from his years of service as a Jedi, although that seems unlikely, given the unfriendly terms on which he left. What do you think?

Have you *seen* the movie? Ben offers Han 2000 up front (which he plans to raise by selling Luke's speeder) and 15000 when they reach Alderaan (knowing that the Alderaanian government/royal family will foot the bill).

War does not make one great.

Aha, but he promises Solo only 2000 before leaving Tatooine and the other 15000 on arrival on Alderaan. The bulk of the reward will be bankrolled by the royal Organa household, in gratitude for the safe delivery of Kenobi and the droids. The 2000 is scraped together from what little Ben and Luke have on them and the money from the sale of Luke's landspeeder.

EDIT: Goddamn it, YIYF!!

Well you guys are no fun at all. Yes I've seen the movie, it's just not very clear that Obi-wan is relying on the Organa family to foot the bill, and I was just feeling kinda whacky during a break here at school. I apologize.

You don't need to apologise!!

Besides, Luca$h will probably clear up any confusion in the SSSE, with an overdub by Ewan McGregor, saying: "...from Prince Bail Organa, whom I once served as General in the Clone Wars, but only by proxy, as I served the Republic, of which he was a Senator..." in between Alec Guinness saying "...plus fifteen..." and "...once we reach Alderaan."
