How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4 — Page 80

Ah, well, I see the point.  I don't want to mess with the rules more than necessary.  I appreciate all the suggestions, but I guess it would be best to keep them as is.  I won't trouble again about the rule.

As for my move, I will play +Rx7lm, with the reminder that an unpromoted rook retreats along the diagonal rather than the two orthogonals, and thus you cannot capture my rook.

yipee another knight for me yay im so happy :/

Perhaps the best option would just to change their orientation so that they face the same way my pieces did. Of course, you'd have to mark them differently than the other pieces, but I can't imagine that would be anymore confusing than promoting them.

Suits me.

Dressing up again, I see. Darth_ender has not yet been suited, unfortunately.

Sorry I've been fickle on the rules.  I hope it doesn't cause confusion.

That's probably it for today.  Just got called into the job I hate :(

I'm afraid the referee is going to have to intervene now. There is a gross imbalance of power at the moment, and I think it is only fair that we switch up the teams a bit. Ender, please trade your promoted rook, one gold general, one silver general, and one knight for one of Post Praetorian's lances. Remember, this is about having fun, not winning, and we want to make sure no one feels discouraged.

^LOL

While the above is meant to be humorous, I do feel rather bad now.  I hate it when I have too big an advantage.

Yes, it is a burden you must bear...as our kingdom dwindles to non-existence...long live the king and such...

I really don't mean to sound condescending and I hope it doesn't come off that way.  I play to win, but I try to be a gentleman about it, not a jerk.  I hope you understand.  I don't necessarily feel it's fair to play less than my best unless we agree to a handicap in the beginning.

If you feel like we're dragging it out, I see no dishonor in resigning.  Your son is against it in principle, but I personally would rather resign than continue a futile battle.  Every time he has beaten me, I resigned before mate, I believe.

When this game does end, are you still up for another game?  Like I said, I'd like to try the other three player game version, as well as this one with an alliance in the beginning, just to see how the dynamics play out.  I know Ric is always up for a game.

You have a really good son, by the way.  I immensely pleased with his maturity and wish I were such an intelligent and spiritual young man when 15.

Yes, well and good, but can one be truly resigned to resigning? Honestly the king's laziness is to blame: he wished to just go to the Pleasure Gardens and never-mind the tedium of strategic warfare. He agrees to give you his kingdom so long as he is not disturbed and allowed a lengthy stay in the Turkish Bathhouse.

That, and I would be interested in pursuing another variation of this game, or, this game, but played in a universe where I do not hand off my bishop to a lance that wasn't there...etc...

Thank you, though his cleverosity seemingly is of his own making...mind you I am sure I must have paid for it...

It is hoped that he shall retain his spirituality of his own accord, for truly I have none with which to supplement or support him. Somewhere along the path of lighting his candle I blew mine out...probably from speaking too much (or perhaps from sheer draftiness, I suppose).

As for his maturity...he did that to himself when I wasn't looking...though I did suspect something was up when he became more responsible than his father...but I wrote that off to the follies of youth...I do nod at him once in a while, but little more than that.

It would be my preference to play this same version in this same way (with the odd change--such as my winning, I suppose) at least one more time before branching out. Familiarity and all that.

Alright, I think we should play this again.  Want to do allies?  If so, who, and who gets the promoted king?

Author

I'm too cantankerous to ally with anyone...you guys can team up on me if you want.

Alright...Post Praetorian, promote your king. That is assuming you're willing to ally with me, ender.

I guess I'll make the first move:

Gosh, I'm already a bit nervous.  Defeating a king that moves like a queen with the ability to fry capture multiple pieces from a distance without moving is, well, a pretty daunting task.

I don't know if we are allowed to coordinate or if we just have to read each other, but I will say that the only way I can think to defeat an opponent like this is to have two ranging pieces along the same line attacking simultaneously so that, if he fries one, the one behind can capture, or else we have to use discovered attacks, like volleyball where I set and Ric spikes before Post gets a turn.  I move a piece out of the way, Ric has a line of attack and captures before Post's turn.  We shall see how this progresses.  But in any case, I don't want to lose the game on the second turn, so I better play:

I was going to do the same, and seeing as I can't think of anything better, I will still do so, allowing each other's rooks to move around without worrying about PP's king reaching the Pleasure Garden.
