How I Would Edit SUPERMAN {Part 1} (workprint completed)

 (Edited)

OK, this is a work cut… We at FanFiltration still
have not placed the reflection of the villiains into the eyes of the krypton Guards helmet, and in another shot of the guard we will need
to make the background behind his helmet black and add the
reflections of the 3 villiains.

I will post some more of my major changes. In a few…

Went to see the new Cut of Superman II in L.A. last Saturday on the big screen {Digital Too}, and got to talk a bit with Michael Thau…

I like {some of} his work. But as other fans have said, we need a “HEAVIER” mix of Lester and Donner footage to make a “best version” of the epic…

That’s some nice work FanFiltration, can't wait to see more.

No doubt the best cut exists utilising a mix of Donner/Lester footage.

Personally I don't enjoy Lester’s version very much. I did make a fan edit from the RIC of S2, and was just enthralled by how great a movie Superman 2 can be once you take out the Lester comedy and add some Donner magic.

I haven’t seen the Donner cut yet, I’m patiently waiting for December 6th the Australian release date for this highly anticipated release.

Fanfiltration it's nice to see you haven't disappeared. Looking forward to the POTA edit and surely anything else you still have in the works.

Ollie, it's nice to see another Australian on the boards. Welcome.

For clarification, is this an edit of S:TM, SII, or a combination of both?

In any event, while I like what you've done with the Lester footage in correcting the nonsensical transformation of one building into another, I just don't like that Lester footage at all. The entire sequence always seemed a bit lame to me. Zod, Ursa, and Non break into the...council chamber and...break a crystal in Jor-El's console? THAT'S what they're sentenced to the Phantom Zone for? I'd much rather the description of their actions come from Jor-El's monologue. This sequence was never intended for II and was just Lester filler-footage to compensate for the lack of Brando, and is really quite a let down.

Superman flicks, as good as they are as-is, seem to be rather untapped for edits, so it's exciting to see some in the works.

I think before the release of the Donner Cut and the Ultimate Edition DVD Set (with lots of deleted scenes), there just hadn't been much to work with. That and Superman Returns probably reignited a lot of people's interest in the franchise.

I think the problem in past Superman Edits & Projects was that the extended T.V. footage has never surfaced in an enjoyable visual condition. All dubs I have seen of the T.V. broadcast of Movie One and Two are in bad shape {and Pan / Scan). There was some talk on this forum about releasing a cleaner dub in better condition of the {International Version} Of Superman: The Movie, but it's yet to see the light of day. I've mad a personal DVD Composite of the Home video Laser, mixed with all of the known extended bits taken from various sources that I enhanced with digital filters, and improved the sound. I never put it out because there was talk of that other Superman release Coming out on this forum. Sorry to see that not get done or released. At the time I did not want to step on anyones toes.

The only thing I dislike about my edit is the condition of the Richard Donner cameo with Clark at the T.V. shop bit. I did not have a good clean dub of this extended part.

I made some menus that are far too basic for my taste too. If anyone would like to work with me on getting this out ASAP, please let me know. I have the Basic mpv and ac3 audio files done.
We just need to fix up some nice looking menus. This would be a nice companion to the SUPERMAN 2: RESTORED INTERNATIONAL CUT
that was released by a fan a few years ago. Now that was a great fan project, and one of the main reasons that the Donner Cut was even made {The other was that they had all the Brando footage}.

BTW: The guy who made that "RESTORED INTERNATIONAL CUT" fan edit got some heat from The WB..

WOW! I'd love to see this release FanFiltration.

It's a terrible shame that WB choose not to release an extensive archive of deleted scenes with the new Superman sets. Pretty much a complete joke that Warners release STM as a 4-disc set and fill up the empty space with George Reeves and the Fleischer cartoons. There really are some terrific deleted scenes out there which should at least be preserved.

I truly hope your cut sees the light of day.

Looking forward to this one.

BTW, I think it'd be awesome if the villains ruling the world scene can be created like it was intended in the script. The original idea was for Zod to deliver that speech from the top of the Washington Monument with shots of destruction around the world (Kremlin, Eiffel Tower, Tokyo, etc). What we got in the end is the Idaho setting and the attack on Mt. Rushmore.

At the very least, I think footage from other movies could be used to depict the world being destroyed with the Idaho speech as a voiceover, maybe even using echo effects to make it more menacing. I'm not talking about taking entire scenes from other movies, just a few seconds for each city/monument being attacked. That would be very cool.

Aren't there some nuggets in the RIC/TV versions that are not in either of the official Supes II DVD's?

Any thought on this project, I do have a great copy of the Part 1.

Hope this is not dead.
