Info: Holiday Special on 16mm?

Yep, it's a person with no feedback trying to sell a non existant item. The photo is definately a video still - notice the colour bleeding and video artifacts.

Best haiku ever.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Too bad its probably a fake. Someone could make a great transfer from it, probably better than anything to date.

What in Thee Psychick Hell?!

That's just nuts. The Holiday Special was filmed on videotape, so why would someone claim to have it on 16mm film?

New user ID, no feedback... this auction stinks like Jabba's breath. Still, I want to hear what this guy has to say for himself.

1 hour long? Guess they cut all the good stuff out of it, eh?

Well, if this is for real (impossible), I'm all over it. And you can bet it WILL be transferred. But it's WAY too fishy to believe...

The thought crossed my mind that it *might* be a video to film transfer done for showing in other countries with incompatible tv systems. Early Dr. Who episodes are a good example of this.

Where were you in '77?

The image he posted is I'm sure just something he found on the net. I seriously doubt he had a frame of the film transfered just to post in the auction.

Curious to see if this is real. Why can't he post an image of the film reel?

Hey!! I still have a super 8 camera with one roll of 3min film left. I could shoot my own edited copy of the holiday special DVD from the TV screen and sell it on ebay!!!

Do you know that for a fact? I'd actually have thought it was filmed on 16mm or 35mm, if it was made in 1978 (or whenever). Probably 16mm, if it was made for TV. Very, very little stuff is shot on video, aside from live events. So it's not out of the realm of possibility for it to be film, is it?

It's certainly not out of the realms of possibility that the special was shot on film - as this was indeed common in the '70s. However:
a) even if it was, this is a heavily edited version (at 1hr) and therefore not much good for preservation;
b) does anyone really care about getting the best possible quality for this? (rhetorical question)

Well... some of us (0.000000000000001%) do.

Definitely! But I think the KCCI-version is the best we can get. Aside from a few lines that are so common with worn analogue video and a minor table wobble, it probably can't get any better. That's a 1st generation tape and most imperfections such as bluriness are probably there because the filming was shoddy.

But one can still hope.

Holiday Special was clearly shot on videotape. You can tell how inferior the quality (even at 2nd or more generation) is compared with the scenes that were cheaply lifted from Star Wars.

Well, I think the big difference in the look of the scenes is caused by the fact that ANH was shot at 24 fps, while the TSWHS was shot (presumably) at 29.97 fps.

maybe cbs will rerun it remastered for its 30th anniversary, followed by a dvd release

HAHAHA!! Indeed.

But... I do think a DVD release is possible. I think if they ever do release it, it will be a limited release, like that R2-D2: Beneath the Dome DVD was. And obviously, the release will have zero marketing associated with it..

Lucas is gonna have fun tinkering with this one...

"The Wookie porn scene is something I've always wanted to re-do, mainly because of money and time constraints. We've enhanced it using CG so that Itchy and Diahan Carroll now perform a little duet - it's a fun musical number!"

No, no, no, here's what he would say:

"The Wookie porn scene is something I've always wanted to re-do, mainly because of money and time constraints. We've enhanced it using CG so that Itchy now masturbates while watching Diahann Carroll sing. Before, it was only hinted at that he was masturbating. Now you actually get to see that."
