All of the links in althor1138's post are dead, but I have his MP4 downloaded and I'm not convinced that this digital PLUGE Pulse would actually trigger bad AGCs. I seem to recall playing it through the USB stick without it freaking out.

Your PM box is full BTW.

Interesting. Can you think of another test for bad AGCs?

I deleted some PMs.

So this is the one you guys are talking about correct?

also will this capture audio as well, and if so how does that get hooked up? always need audio for sync jobs lol.

Thanks

Yes, that's it.

It looks like it uses a 1/8" stereo connection for audio.

Thanks

No problem. Let us know if you decide to buy this card.

I have the 750 card, but it keeps crashing. I'll have another go sometime and see if it has AGC issues.

Do you have a copy of Windows XP lying around?

OK I just ordered this card,

http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Theater-PCIE-Tuner-Card/dp/B003F8O690/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3FNYQ0DFNN1CP&coliid=IWESQTQ8WK53Z

so is there any tips or tricks I should know when I test it out? like I said I have only used the Canopus ADVC-110 before so this is new territory for me lol, and as mentioned before I will be using my Pioneer CLD-79 Elite Player, and I assume you guys use VDub for capturing?

Thanks

I'm using win7x64 with this card.  I just installed the card and turned on the computer and if I remember right win7 installed a driver automatically and I just used that one.  Maybe you'll need the driver from the disc though.  I only ever use VDUB for capturing with this card because if I use it with other programs it gets confused and then won't work properly in VDUB without a reinstall sometimes.

If you get it to work I think you'll be happy with the card.  If the CLD-79 has any adjustable comb filter settings I'd turn it all completely off or down and let the Theater750HD card handle all of the separation and filtering.  That's all I've got.  Good luck!

Thank you, so my system should auto detect as well then, I hope lol, now to figure out if my Player has adjustments for comb filter.

Thanks again for some info.

This is probably a dumb question, but here goes:

I have a minidv camcorder hooked up to my firewire port. Using the camera's "Edit mode" I can capture whatever I want through a simple RCA connection. I don't record to tape, I just capture straight to the computer.
How does my setup compare to any of these capture cards?

Okay, I went and did a test.

The file below is the result of:

3 test cards --> PAL DVD compliant MPEG2 file on a usb flash drive --> Philips DVD Player with USB port --> RCA Composite out --> DV Camcorder In --> Firewire port --> Dv Capture with Virtual Dub --> Interlaced Mp4 (thanks Ripbot264!)

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3Wlp4clLq4dUHJpVTI4VEN6Wms

I gotta admit, this DVD Player has quite the crappy composite. I think the audio buzzes too, along with the video.

JEDIT

Sorry again for hijacking the thread, but apparently this DVD Player is utter crap.

The problem is that, using the firewire with NTSC material, the colorspace is 4:1:1...

I'm pretty sure I have the PAL version of Digital Video Essentials, so that was a PAL signal I was feeding to the camera. I'm going to make further tests using my DVD recorder. Hopefully the picture will be better.

PAL DV signal is 4:2:0 as the DVD, so it's better than NTSC DV.

I still prefer to capture at 4:2:2 to preserve as much color information as possible for further processing.

So, let me see if I got this straight:

to capture PAL content, firewire should be ok. To capture anything else that requires a chroma subsampling ratio other than 4:2:0, get a capture card. Is this correct?

I'm still thinking that a capture card is the best way to go; uncompressed 4:2:2 is the minimum requirements.

I'm following an Aja Kona/Xena LHe, but as it's PCI-E, and I have only one PCI-E occupied by the video card, I should find a PCI video card if I want to install the Aja card... anyone has experience with an Aja capture card that has composite input?

I'm hoping this guy keeps developing his software.  This could potentially be really effective.

I was aware of the first project, didn't read about the second despite the fact I visited his blog recently. Both have really great potential, and hope they will reach a working phase.

Meanwhile, if someone could solve the infamous phase-inversion trick... (^^,)

I wonder if we can use a device with a phase inversion circuit like the audio processing guys do.

Hmm...

It's what I was thinking about... as in theory it does work!

What about poita's positive result? Could you write something about them?

I haven't seen his results. He only mentioned to me that he was able to get it working with a DVD recorder.

I don't think it would work with video signal, but if something like this exists for video signal, then it could work!

...and now, something completely different... a lot of time ago, I was reading in a thread that a user have captured the RGB signal from a laserdisc (with RGB output, of course) three times, each for read, green and blue signal, then recombined it (don't rembember if with avisynth) and the result was better than "straight" composite.

Now, it happens I have a laserdisc player with RGB output - but I was not able to find anywhere a DB9-to-RCA (or to BNC) cable... if someone could provide me that cable, or point me to some store that has it, I will be more than happy to test this technique!
