High Definition: Aspect ratios, black bars and Anamorphic

I was wondering if HD movies are (can be) anamorphic (does it even have any use?). Also, are black bars still added for movies wider than 16:9? What would the resolution be of a 2.35:1 movie in full HD?

A 1080 HD 2.35:1 movie would be roughly 1920x818 with 131 pixel black bars on top and bottom. I believe what we call anamorphic for PAL and NTSC is irrelevant in HD.

So if a movie has an aspect ratio of 2:1 the vertical resolution for full HD would be (1.78/2) x 1080?
