Hero (not the movie)

Typical lack of etiquette on the part of cellphone users. I always shut mine off if I'm @ a movie or some other event like it.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I sympathize with Billly but, would it not have been better to let security handle the problem?

btw: I don't own a cell phone.

Few comments:

1. I got a cellphone just a few months ago. I always keep it on silence mode.

2. At work, too often I have to remind people that the library that our cellphone policy is that you talk in the front or back lobby.

3. More than people that let their phone ring, I cannot stand people that use hands-free headsets. You see them standing there talking to "no one", and everytime, EVERYTIME, I think they are full-blown, out-of-their-skull nuts.

4. I wish the US would legalize cellphone jammers. I'd have one instaled in my car.

What I don't understand is what can be so pertinent that you have to talk to someone in your car?

Especially since chances are that you are en route to that same person.

You'd probably end up wrecking anyway from someone messing with their phone trying to figure out what was wrong.

besides, what if you accidentally jam an emergency cell phone call to 911?

That is exactly why it's not legal in the US

But security rarely does handle a problem effectively. Most cells only ring six times before the call goes through to voicemail. For security to locate the person that is ringing within six rings requires a near miracle.

I love reading stories about actors on stage reacting to cell phone users. I just wish one of them would ask the audience who it is. I'm sure those immediately around the person would be more than willing to point him/her out. Then use that to embarrass the hell out of them or have them kicked out. Some tickets do have a caveat that says anyone interrupting a performance may be removed. Time to enact it.

As for emergencies and whatnot. Before 15 years ago, no one had a cell phone and they survived just fine. If you miss a call, that's what voicemail is for. You are paying such and such number of dollars to see a show and so is everyone around you. Just bear in mind that you are not the only audience member. Be courteous.

Well, I still don't think we should be able to stop people from making cell phone calls to 911 in an emergency. Just because they couldn't do it 15 years ago, doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to do it now.

I think in some areas, cellular signals should be jammed. When you are in an enclosed entertainment/lecture/classroom environment such as in Billy Crystal's theatrical play, where staff are readily available to help you in an emergency, then a cellphone to call 911 is not at all necessary. These places have staff trained to help and, if necessary, they have land lines to call 911. I would love if our theaters had jammers.

On the road, no jammers, obviously.

you know what is really cool is they have paint that can jam a cell phone or wireless internet signal now. I'll try to find the link to that story.

I know it was on fark.com somewhere. They have the best news stories there. But i'll look into that paint thing

anyone who talks on a cellphone at the movies, church or a public library should be beat down. yuppies who drive crazy and talk on cellphones makes me really mad, and they even cut you off in traffic. If they get themselves killed i say good riddance, but harming innocent bystanders and other drivers or making people unsafe if not cool.
