As far as audio options I'm all about old school mixes i.e. theatrical stereo and mono. Let's face it they didn't have Lossless True HD 7.1 surround sound back then.

True, but they did have high quality 4.1 mixes on the 70mm prints, which were the direct precursor to the 5.1 format used today.  The surrounds were monaural, but there was significant bass and the dynamic range was hugely increased over the stereo and mono versions.

There is no available transfer of the real 70mm mix, but the default track on the dark_jedi version is a close approximation of it.  (Yes, it says 5.1, but the surround effects are still mono, so they just play out of both rear channels equally.)  That 'oldschool Star Wars' sound is present throughout, I promise.  ;)

Ok, so annoying technical question, if someone were procuring a set of DJ V3 trilogy from a Usenet source, when it is done downloading how would one play it? Will be decoded properly?

Also having trouble finding any real info on everything DJ V3 includes on the disc. Full disc details is what i am looking for. The topic on it here is pretty great but I would like full specs on this one. Maybe being redundent and not seeing it in front of me.

I've no doubt that the quality of it will blow me away compared to the GOUT. Does DJ V3 have full menus, subs, etc?

anyone know where I can get the artwork for DJ V3? It looks great!

The artwork is usually in a DVD Rom folder on the DVD.

Many people today are unaware that Star Wars was a pioneering film in terms of audio; not just in its sound effects, but in the format and the way it was put together.  I myself did not realize until a few years ago that it was actually the first film ever to have a dedicated channel for recording bass effects, and as such is worthy of being preserved and heard in this form.

Anyway, the d_j set should come with two folders: a VIDEO_TS which has all the movie data, and a DVD_ROM containing the artwork, if I recall correctly.  The whole thing is already in the proper DVD format and ready to be burned to disc.

Hairy,

I was not aware about that fact, but I do know that Dolby and specifically THX were pioneered by LucasArts. I am curious about that 70MM reconstruction. perhaps it is posted elsewhere in this forum but how was it approximated if no original survives?

There's a set of 4 in-theater rips (one from each corner).

Using this as a guide and the most similar version (1993) with the help of other mixes it was edited back to something close to that.

So I came home from work tonight to find Star Wars DJ V3 waiting for me all downloaded! I am so excited! One question from a newbie to all the Jedi's out there. I use Nero 11 Ultra as my one stop burning/ripping program. I have the Video_TS folder with all the video information but am a little confused about how to put it all together to burn a DVD. I will be using a Verbatim DVD+R DL  disc to burn it to. So am I to assume using Nero Burning ROM that I drag the contents of the Video_TS folder into that folder and then click burn it? I don't see a folder for Audio_TS so I'm gonna say everything is included in the one folder.

Again, pardon my picking of your collective brains but that is what this forum is here for. I can't wait to view this and then offer my two cents on it.

Another post to say I have viewed some of the video files and they look fantastic. Grain is very apparent, especially at the start of the film but it does give it a real film quality that I love. I am stoaked about all the audio options, I mean you can watch each film 4 or 5 times and have a different experience each time as far as sound mixes go. The covers are fantastic too! In short this fits my bill to a T. After burning and reviewing these films it will be Harmy's Despecialized Trilogy.

If you cannot wait, navigate to the VIDEO_TS and try double-clicking the smaller *.ifo files and watch on your PC (VIDEO_TS.ifo I think). Windows Media Player usually works but I use a prog called VLC.

Back to your question....."..

From memory with Nero Express only it was something like....

Use the "Create Video DVD" option.  This would open a box with a pinky/red VIDEO_TS icon in it.

You do drag the contents of your VIDEO_TS folder into the Nero version. You can also drag the full DVD_ROM folder into your Nero box alongside the pinky/red VIDEO_TS folder. This will not affect how it all works but it is what the creator intended you do.

The AUDIO_TS is redundant......

Basically your file structure in the Nero box needs to match the file structure of the files on your PC. Then burn. The standard settings in Nero in the "Create Video DVD" option usually tended to work for me.......

If you look back at the oldest 3 or 4 pages of this forum, you will see how important the DJ V3 is. Back then, we had the SE DVD but nothing Original.

All crawls were "Episode IV.  A NEW HOPE"

We questioned missing audio lines

We argued about missing audio and which was "proper" Star Wars.

Was there a mythical "missing" Mono mix??

We argued even more about missing/different audio lines.

Did I mention the arguing!

Lots of people far more talented than me spent untold hours resolving the above over many years. DJ improved the flawed GOUT by adding to work done by g-force and others and basically brought everything together in one release.

What took us years to find out the long and painful way can now be learned by any "New Guy" in a day or two.........

I call that a result!!!

More on the audio dialogue changes here.

All we need now is video proof that Luke did throw the grappling hook twice after the first throw missed and the rest of the old arguments will stop (mostly)

g-force improved the flawed GOUT and DJ basically brought everything together in one release. (People sometimes forget that DJ's three DVD versions were using three different stages of g-force's great image stabilization scripts.)

John Williams score is actually enough proof that such a scene was never in the final film.

I do stand partly corrected. The work done by g-force was used on V1 to V3 but DJ then did an awful lot of extra work on top of that. It is that work I was referring to.

So we are both correct from a  certain point of view......

Yeah, I'm definitely not saying DJ didn't do a lot of hard work, all the audio syncing alone is a phenomenal undertaking. I just see g-force's contributions forgotten in many conversations regarding these, that's all.

I have amended my original post.

I was trying to do a potted history of where we were to where we are now. To do it properly would need a book writing.....

What was a mystery is now taken for granted and dozens of people have got us to this place.

I am with you on the grappling hook but others swear otherwise.....

Agree russ, this forum is a fantastic resource for info about the history of these films, many things regarding these films have been uncovered by fellow SW-freaks on these boards over the years. If you have a question, there's almost always someone who have an answer.

Ohhh I was too busy watching you guys compare the size of your lightsabers. *chuckles* Yes Russ, I think I am on the right track as far as the DVD goes, just have to sit back and let it do its work and wait. You guys are amusing, I am so glad I fit in here with my nerdery. *chuckles again*

I am not sure if that last post was praise, an insult or good old-fashioned taking the piss...........

Either way, thank you very much.

I do believe over the last few days we have sucked you in to our ways. Whether you like it or not, you are now one of us and there is no turning back!!!!!!!!!!

Russ, take it however you will my friend. *chuckles* Yes I am now one of us which is pretty exciting because I've never been an "us" before. Back on the subject though, in Nero Burning ROM, should I burn a regular DVD or an AVCHD? what is the difference between the two? I would like it to play on standard DVD players (i.e. the old school ones my parent's still have) as well as the newer ones like I own (Blu-Ray etc).

Also, I was wondering what the quality of the DJ Trilogy is, 720? I know it upscales on Blu-Ray players but what is the actual quality? I can't begin to tell just by looking at the bitrate like you guys.

From what I remember the DJ V3 was good old fashioned DVD format only. In fact, if it has a VIDEO_TS folder, it is DVD only.

Some of the Harmy versions out there are in a different format which could be AVCHD but this 40-something has yet to learn what that is. My Asus O Player plays it fine but other than that I am screwed for a better answer.

Likewise any question on upscaling.

thanks mate for answering that nagging question of what format to burn it as. Fascinating reading about the differences in audio from each release. Subtle as they may be, they are there. So now comes the part where you all offer your own opinions to me about the mixes you prefer to listen to. I know the ultimate opinion belongs to the listener, but I'm curious what mix is your favorite and why? I don't have my surround sound system hooked up yet, but that shouldn't stop me from enjoying each dedicated mix. BTW, is there a sub menu for audio options or do you simply click the audio button to switch the mixes?

Author
Time

There is a menu which has 5 of the audio options. The sound only track is available by your audio button on your DVD remote only.

I grew up with a UK TV early 80s recording which became a huge part of the source for the Monomix restoration project. This is my favourite.

Second favourite is the other 1977 Theatrical Stereo mix as that was my first retail copy.

The link in Post 38 tells you the differences and as you will see, the Monomix has quite a few differences.

Back to the arguments post earlier, Threepio's tractor beam line, opening/closing blast doors and who was annoying Luke on the "Blast it" line have caused some fun and games around here in the dim and distant past...... Happy days!!
